Dark Corners of the Earth is a police procedural TV show turned into a Hunter game, set in the Four Corners area. The party consists of the team put together by the various law enforcement groups in the area to deal with things no one else can - or wants to. They are the Nowhere Squad, who deal with crimes that don’t make any goddamn sense. Serial murder, occult theft, strange things in the dark. The team’s a mix of FBI agents assigned to a dead-end job in the rear end end of nowhere, cops who’ve seen too much and those associated with them.

Theme Song: Radio Nowhere

The Four Corners area is a small area centered on the junction of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The largest city in the area is Farmington, New Mexico, and that’s where the team is nominally based. Nominally. However, most of the land in the area belongs to the Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, the Hopi Reservation, or the Shiwannaqin Zuni. The area is a mess of jurisdictions as a result. That’s why the team can be from any group that might be connected to the cops - this entire thing is basically all these groups going ‘we just need someone to handle the weird poo poo here, since no one knows who’s really in charge at any point.’

Also of note: horses remain a viable means of transportation in the area.

You may ask: how is a cop show going to handle current US politics? The answer is it's not, we exist in the Eternal Present of the Cop Show, in which current politics form a backdrop and little more. The entire genre is generally somewhat right-leaning, what with assuming that cops are generally on the level; I am not, but I also understand that for the fun of the game, having all or even most of the NPC cops be racist scumbags would just be generally unfun. So we will just accept this as part of the fantasy of the World of Darkness: the Four Corners area has fewer fascist cops, though given the Native American/US government conflicts, there certainly aren't none.

Themes that I intend for the game include:
  • Forgotten history.
  • Native American and US relations and conflict.
  • Desert expanses, survival and distance
  • Modern life versus folk tradition
  • Cowboys
  • UFO scares
  • Urban legends

House Rules
Tier 2 Hunters get:
  • A free dot of Professional Training and a free dot of Compact Status
  • 3 dots of supernatural merits OR a minor template OR narrative benefit to be discussed.
Tier 3 Hunters get:
  • A free dot of Professional Training and a free dot of Conspiracy Status
  • 3 dots of Endowments.

We are using the makeshift 2e rules from Mortal Remains; VASCU endowments mostly work as written. Come to me if something doesn't make sense in 2e.

Permitted Compacts and Conspiracies:
  • The Bear Lodge
  • The Keepers of the Source
  • The Long Night
  • The Loyalists of Thule
  • Network Zero
  • Null Mysteriis (as long as you aren't being stupid about them)
  • The Union
  • Sell me on a better version of the Aegis Kai Doru and maybe
  • Knights of Saint Adrian
  • The Lucifuge
  • Sell me on a Malleus character and maybe
  • VASCU

If you want to be a character with a minor template, talk to me about what template you want to use; not all are appropriate for the tone of the game. That tone, specifically, is something like Criminal Minds, Law & Order, Numb3rs or any other silly cop show that isn't especially good but is fun to watch.

Apps will run to...oh, I'm gonna say January 5th at least. I may alter this later. Game will be PBP.

If you want to find me, I hang out on #persona on SynIRC.

Sheridan Claw, Navajo Tribal Police
(Cop Show Niche: What if Ice-T was also Deputy Hawk?)

The Navajo Nation has always had more than their fair share of the supernatural. Whether it was stories of alien abductions out in the desert or Skinwalkers lurking in the heart of the tribe or things stranger still, there was enough material for people to swap over drinks or an open fire until the end of time. Growing up, Sheridan figured it was nothing more than superstitious nonsense. Tales that old ladies would tell to scare their kids straight. If the Sheridan of now could tell his younger self half the poo poo that he'd see when he grew up, that poor kid's hair would turn white. Nah, if anything, the stories haven't done justice to the weirdness that lurks in the dark.

Sheridan is a proud, though somewhat disgraced, member of the Navajo Tribal Police. Scarred and worn down from a career just chock full of weird, inexplicable poo poo and weirder, more inexplicable politics, it looked as though he was on track for an early retirement. The kind that you don't really get a choice in. Almost five years ago, though, everything changed. He was approached by a team from Howard Investigative Services when they needed to track down a guy they claimed had gone to ground on Navajo land. Real dangerous, real connected. The kind of guy that uses and abuses the system to get away with whatever they want.

That hit a chord with Sheridan. Off the clock, he worked with them for the better part of a week. With Sheridan's connections in the community, it wasn't exactly hard for him to piece together the weird inconsistencies in the target's identity and point the HIS team his way. It was more than a little harder for him to process what all happened when the demon broke cover and went very, very loud. When the dust settled, wounds were patched up, and he had a chance to ask the survivors what the hell just happened, it was an easy decision for him to sign on. Not as an employee, no, but as more of an informal liaison. That role shifted towards being one of the prime dispatchers in the Four Corner region as time passed, particularly when it came to quarries that landed in the Navajo Nation.

Joining up with the Knights was more than just a simple turning point in Sheridan's life. Where he was jaded and tired, it awoke his righteous indignation. Where he was broken by years of service, the Ink bound him together. Not just as good as new, no, but better. It didn't come in time to help his career, but with a little finagling, schmoozing, and a couple of pointed reminders of favors owed and dirty laundry that was better hidden, he managed to negotiate a posting to the Nowhere Squad instead of an unceremonious retirement. That suited Sheridan just fine. He knows what lurks in the darkness. Whether it's the lifestealers, skinwalkers, or weirdo extraterrestrials, he's resolved to stand between them and the people he swore to serve and protect.

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?

Many years ago, when Sheridan was a fresh-faced rookie on the force, he and his partner responded to a domestic disturbance report. It seemed routine enough at the time, but when the two pulled up to the house, things got politically charged. It turned out that the address that had been called in belonged to a member of the tribal council, Peterson Cronemeyer. Dispatch relayed new orders: drop the matter and pretend it never happened. Sheridan argued for responding regardless, his partner rightly raised the point that doing so would end their careers. After a short argument, Sheridan backed down. They drove off, went on their way, and finished their patrol. End of story, or so he thought.

A few days later, Cronemeyer's wife was found dead. Foul play suspected, but never proven. Sheridan has never forgiven himself for not pressing the matter, even considering the good he's done in the years on the force since.

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?

Easily the worst thing that Sheridan can imagine is going on the take. To turn his back on the concepts of truth and justice, everything that he's sworn to protect. Can he imagine himself doing it...? Maybe. Not anytime soon, no, and not without a lot of steps in between, but the possibility is there. The fear that someday he won't be willing to take that extra step to do what's right. He'll take that offered payout, take a nice vacation, maybe actually retire out into the country. He'll feel, maybe, that he's given enough in the line of duty and it's time to get that back. That he's owed a little bit of payola and, really, who cares what he has to let slide?

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?

You don't stay in the business as long as Sheridan has without getting a little bit of insight into what makes your average perp tick. Everyone's got an angle. But the one angle he could never figure out, the one course of action so mind-bogglingly incomprehensible it just makes him furious... it's making a pact with a demon. He's seen the end result. People stripped of everything that makes them who they were, with nothing but a nice car or some mystical mumbo-jumbo that made them look real pretty. It's a small comfort that his Knight buddies usually take down the lifestealer in short order, but that doesn't fix the damage done. Not by a long shot.

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten?

When Sheridan came of age, his father, his grandfather, and his twin brother undertook a spiritual retreat in their family's sweat lodge. It was supposed to be a time of spiritual self-discovery, transformation, and communion. Instead, tragedy struck. The flames grew, endless and voracious, and they completely consumed his twin. The fire burned with such fury, such otherworldly hunger, that it scorched him from the fabric of reality itself. Sheridan has repressed the events of that night, yes, but even his father and grandfather have forgotten who died in that blaze and why, exactly, he was in the family's sweat lodge. As far as the world is concerned, Sheridan has always been an only child.

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?

Sheridan shot a kid once in the line of duty. An airsoft gun that looked a little too real, it was dark, all sorts of extenuating circumstances. All above board, all according to procedure, but... even so, it just about destroyed him. He hasn't carried a gun since. A taser, tops, and that was about all the department could talk him up to. Hell, he doesn't much like looking at them either. The thought that one day he might have to pick one up again, even if it is to go hunt monsters and save people, haunts him. He's not about to forgive himself any time soon and he's sure as hell not going to make that same mistake twice.

Wait a minute...

Latoria Morgan II, Mesa Verde Park Ranger turned VASCU
above photo taken at the Oconomiyaki cosplay photoshoot in Albuquerque.

"Ms. Rivera, please, you need to understand that you were trespassing in protected pygmy-owl nesting area. Mmhmm, I know it's a difficult time for you. You're a wandering spirit now, no one's seen or heard you for months, and uh legally speaking your body is still an occupant of San Salvador. But! Regulations are regulations, and that paranormal activity of yours upturned topsoil. I'm gonna have to file an environmental citation."

"Yes, I did cross-check the census data for where your boy headed. He's a chartered accountant in West Reno now. Got a website and everything. Ah ah ah, report details now, passing on later."

Fifty thousand acres of desert. Latoria swears she's tracked drunk tourists through every last inch. Visitors around these parts'll point loaded firearms at federal LEOs without blinking, barge into Ute land and pretend 'honest taxpayers don't need to pay for entry', then heckle the poor interps about aliens for good measure. On top of that, the woman's second sight clues her into the dead and the inhuman that lurk beside the sightseers. Their legal chicanery has forced her into more mocha-fueled all nighters than she can count. All this work, and no support on call but a horse and miles of uncaring scrubland. Ranger Morgan found it all..."bracing".

Her gripes weren't really as severe as she makes them out to be, and she'll say as much if you press her. The woman genuinely relishes the Mesa Verde: the slow lap of red-gold clouds across the firmament, the snow-flecked mists in winter, and yes, often the thrill of her job itself. Nothing quite like bagging some 2-percent-wolf-blooded pack of macho-men on attempted poaching charges. And she'll always remember chasing down that enraged hiker's ghost who sued the state of Colorado by possessing proxy plaintiffs. Hell, she even got to keep one of her swords around to clear brush for wildfire prevention.

Definitely a pleasant shift from the cloying socials awaiting her back home in Georgia. The Morgans, one must be aware, are a prominent family. Which means their endless occasions are all hotbeds of conniving and barely-repressed hostility. An unpleasant prospect for any soul that enjoys their personal space, to say nothing of a psychic one. Latoria does admit that earning her degrees (environmental science and mathematics) would've been much harder without the resources her family gave. But she'll also admit that the estate will survive just fine without her ersatz manners getting in the way. The woman is content to pursue her daily life of do-gooding and reading volleyball manga on the edge of the habitable world.

Said life has been complicated just a little by a mandatory transfer into the Vanguard Serial Crimes Unit. A special agent investigating a slasher's wake of bones found her on the very same trail, using a rough form of psychometry to piece together the suspect's last location. Lead led after lead, and within a harrowing month they sliced away the killer's misspelled protective tattoos and shipped him off to face a jury of his peers. After that it was just a few hundred forms and a wrung arm until Ranger Morgan became Agent Morgan. The solitude and disrespect accorded to one was swiftly replaced with the bustle and prestige of the other.

To be honest, she's not thrilled about the change. And assignment to this bizarre inter-departmental "Nowhere Squad" only blurs her position further. Still, she thinks, it could be fun right? Figures that if the FBI had to drag an oddity like her into this mess, the next few months are going to be fascinating.

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?

There was a drug bust, a trail of tip-offs and blood and glass leading to a heroin smuggling operation nestled in the heart of Federal Property. A real family business if the days she spent monitoring them were any indication. Single mother, three kids, and the worst part was they cared for each other. Supported each other. Fought for each other, eyes aflame with that which burns brighter than hate.

The knife-scar Latoria got from the youngest son still burns dull, from time to time. She tries telling herself that CPS found them all good homes and lives worth living, that she did the best she could, but for all that it still tears at her.

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?

Messing up and disgracing the Park Service. Even her brief time with VASCU has taught her that news of their failures never gets out into the public (even if the Bureau itself never stops yukking about them). If she trips up, she knows the blame will fall squarely on her, and more importantly her old life and old comrades. Innocent heads would roll.

The work of the NPS, for all its failings, for all the overwork and decades of falling support, is something she truly believes in. She would hate herself if she brought it to ruin.

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?

Knowingly destroy the lives of others for profit. Latoria can spare some sympathy for those who harm others out of survival, raw uncontrollable emotion, or dumb ignorance. Even monsters genuinely can't help themselves sometimes. But someone who'd casually smuggle alcohol to a town that's dying of it, pave over homes to build projects that never start? Law-breaker or no, that is something she can't forgive.

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten?

During a night patrol across the cliff dwellings, she briefly saw the entire plain beneath her begin to funnel downwards. Subtly at first, barely noticeable, then picking up speed until it seemed like the whole Mesa Verde would collapse into a moonlit whirlpool of sandstone. Creatures like brilliant many-winged birds erupted from its center, the whole flock singing in human voices of discordant joy. One even sounded like her late great-granfather; ever since she recalls his memory with unnatural clarity.

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?

Many years ago, at a garden party with her visiting grandpa, bored out of her skull as children often are. She snuck out into the kudzu-choked wilderness with her best friend, latent psychic abilities calling her towards adventure. Until a cottonmouth bit the both of them, and through the pooling blood and the terror of death all she could manage was to hold her friend's hand and promise she wouldn't leave her. It was a promise kept.

Pillbug

Detective James Little, FPD

Almost anybody in Farmington who crosses paths with the local police knows Detective Little. Most of them don't know his name. They've probably never even had occasion to speak with him. Nevertheless, if you tell someone in Farmington you saw "the big cop" somewhere, they know who you're talking about. At six-foot-seven with a wide, muscular build and a baritone voice, James makes a hell of an impression when he walks into a room, but his intimidating frame belies a soft-spoken and friendly personality. He doesn't drink, he doesn't even curse. Oh, he can get loud and scary in an interrogation room, and he can hold his own in a fight, but ultimately all James cares about is keeping his community and family safe.

That's why The Union appealed to him, once he realized there was some truth to all those legends about vampires and ghosts and who knows what else. It started with the death of his partner 6 years ago, where some kind of demon or changeling revealed its true nature to him for a split second. He started making inquiries all across town and up the chain of command about what happened that night, and he got lucky; a Union member found him before someone or something else did. Now he posts regularly on the forums, reading up as much as he can on the monsters he knows are out there. It's a struggle, because James has never been one for book learning, but he knows about this stuff and now he's got a duty to protect the people who don't. Like his wife and daughter, for instance.

James joined the police department right out of high school, working his way up from beat cop to homicide about 5 years ago. There was some skepticism about the new detective at first, since he wasn't exactly the brightest recruit, but James put those doubts to rest (and raised new ones) by clearing his first ten cases without a sweat. Not all easy cases either, but some real whodunits. Not only did he have a sharp eye for crime scenes, but he had an uncanny intuition. They laughed off his "gut feelings" about what had happened and his "hunches" about where they should focus the investigation at first. They stopped laughing when they realized he was almost always right. Between that and his insistence on his story that a "monster" had killed his partner six years ago, he was a distressing reminder to everyone in homicide that there were things going on that couldn't be explained away. He was also something of an embarrassment, this hulking "aw-shucks" country boy who cracked uncrackable cases and made everybody else look bad. Assignment to the Nowhere Squad was intended as an exile of sorts, but (to the combined horror and relief of his superiors) Detective Little was thrilled. So far as he was was concerned, that was exactly where he belonged. He thought he was one of the only people taking the supernatural threats to Four Corners seriously. Working with a whole squad of people to deal with this stuff would take a real load off his back.

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?

Already well over 6 feet tall and 200 pounds in high school, James played outside linebacker for the Farmington High Coyotes. There was a game in his senior year against a team from a smaller neighboring town, and James was in a foul mood that day. James's father had fallen off the wagon a week before and now he hadn't been home in 3 days. For all he and his mother knew dad was dead in a ditch somewhere. His grades were slipping; he was having trouble sleeping because of persistent nightmares he could never quite remember. And they were down by 9 points going into the fourth quarter in a game they'd expected to win. The frustrations got the better of him. He just wanted to lash out. So when he got an opportunity to sack the QB, he hit him. Hard. Way, way harder than he needed to. The kid's arm snapped in three places on impact with the ground; James still vividly remembers the sound it made, and the screams that came after. The poor kid writhing on the ground with his eyes bulging out and rolling back, all the blood drained from his face and his mouth puckering like a fish gasping for air. Inflicting such a severe life-changing injury on an innocent because of his own bad mood still haunts him to this day, even if it was an accident.

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?

Executing someone who unquestionably has it coming but who won't be appropriately punished any other way. The depraved murderer who's going to walk free because there's no evidence that would stand up in a court of law, or who'll only see a few years in jail because of political connections, that kind of thing.

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?

Serial killing or mass murder. He hasn't seen one in Farmington yet, but he worries. Every time a local death goes unsolved, he worries that it might just be the start.

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten? (Everyone in the World of Darkness has run into weird poo poo. Most people repress, forget or just move on.)

James is unaware of his psychometry. Typically it takes the form of gut feelings or vague impressions, an intuition that he trusts so instinctively that he's never thought to question where it comes from. The one exception to this (so far, anyway) happened when he and his parents first moved to Farmington. When he first touched the doorknob to enter the house for the first time, he had a vision of mind-crushing intensity. Unknown to anyone still living in the area, the original builder of the house had gone mad and butchered his whole family with an axe one winter night. That had been nearly a hundred years prior, and the house had traded hands so many times since then that it had slipped out of local memory. The spirits in the home, however, still remembered quite well. James toppled to the ground seizing and screaming as he relived the murders from every perspective possible. When he awoke in the hospital a half-hour later, the traumatic events were already being repressed. If you asked him now, all he'd remember was that he had a seizure when he was young and that it took years of doctor visits before his parents were convinced it was a one-off thing and not a sign of epilepsy. But he relives that vision sometimes, in the nightmares he never remembers...

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?

The most traumatic thing he remembers is the death of his partner Billy Lightfoot. It was 6 years ago, back when James was still a beat cop. Billy was new to the force, but he was a good kid with a bright future. And he had a family, too. They got called out to a liquor store robbery in progress. The guy looked like a tweaker or something: skinny, pale, and trembling, with dark rings around his eyes. He was trying to rob the place with a steak knife, and he gave up as soon as he saw the cops. James doesn't understand what happened next. They got the kid against the wall with his hands behind his back. They cuffed him. James looked away for a half-second, and there was a click and a rattle as the handcuffs popped right back off the kid. By the time he looked back the kid was ducking low, raking one of his hands across Billy's abdomen. Billy's gut split open like the kid had 6-inch claws. For a second, James could've sworn the kid did, that he was some kind of skeletal monster with bony claws and too-long limbs. Then the image was gone and it was just the kid, who stiff-armed James with shocking strength and ran out into the night. Billy had bled out in his arms by the time the ambulance arrived. They never found the kid. He shouldn't have been able to get far on foot, but it was like he'd just evaporated into thin air. And there was absolutely nothing wrong with the cuffs. They'd just refused to stay on. That was only James' first remembered brush with the supernatural, but it is by far the worst he's ever had.

I'm interested if it isn't already full. I asked one of my players if I could use her character from my bumbling civil servant game, because I enjoyed her so much. It's been too long since I got a chance to play a game instead of just running them. New to pbp rules tho, so hopefully I don't gently caress up and embarrass myself.

Meredith Andersen, former member of TFV who blackmailed her CO so that she could "quit" (faking her own death) at the finale of the last game. Now she's trying to build a new life outside TFV under an assumed identity: Jane Washington.

She's kind of a bumbler, a bit literal sometimes, and inevitably the "group mom" of any group she becomes a part of. Think Marge Gunderson from Fargo.

We are not full up, I won't be making picks for at least two weeks. As a side note, TFV will be taking on the narrative role of the CIA here - untrustworthy, dangerous, and likely to do murders and cover it up. Your remit is to arrest first, with 'killed resisting arrest' being possible but ideally less common. (Even if you aren't VASCU.)

Dachsundofdoom: That looks like a 1e sheet, given Morality and the 7 Sins/7 Virtues Virtue and Vice. You will want to go through it using the 2e core! We are using 2e, the '1.5e' is because Hunter doesn't have a 2e, just a rules update kludgework in Mortal Remains. You still want to use the 2e core for making your pre-Hunter-template character.

As a note for everyone, do be sure to answer the Integrity questions.

That'd actually work well with this character I think, since she was a grunt and got out because she was sick of being sent into dangerous situations where her superiors were withholding useful information. But if you still don't like the idea of a former TFV agent being a part of this, that's fine.

Also, I don't have the core 2e book but I'm pretty sure I have the rules down since I have the free rules update pdf and also the Promethean 2e book. The only problem I have is that I don't see these integrity questions anywhere...

I'm thinking of a local/state cop undercover with the Hell's Angels our some other local biker gang that's running drugs, though I gotta read up on the rest of nHunter since I only read the core book years ago before they redid all the rules.

Tentatively would probably be part of The Union, I'd think?

Also, I don't have the core 2e book but I'm pretty sure I have the rules down since I have the free rules update pdf and also the Promethean 2e book. The only problem I have is that I don't see these integrity questions anywhere...

I'm fine with it! Just wanted to be clear - that's why TFV wasn't on the list. You can be ex-TFV, just not active.

The Integrity questions are:

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten? (Everyone in the World of Darkness has run into weird poo poo. Most people repress, forget or just move on.)

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?

Okay I'm confused. Is 1e oWoD in this regard? Or what?

Because I have the Hunter the Vigil book and that's it.

Hunter the Vigil is 1e nWoD. It was made before God Machine Chronicles and nWoD officially becoming Chronicles of Darkness (CofD). Because there is a 2e of Hunter coming out and it's a popular game, they put out a book called Mortal Remains which has some rules patching to adapt Hunter 1e into a 1.5 to carry folks over until they release 2e. What mors is saying is, when you make a character, make them according to God Machine chargen rules and then apply the Mortal Remains Hunter template. Or at least that's how I'm reading it.

Got it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/pf4lyh1ec5fs3qf/Meredith.pdf?dl=0

1. Accidentally killing her boss when working as a personal bodyguard.
2. Accidentally killing a human.
3. Torture.
4. That the nice Italian man her Valk squad was working with performed literal Satanic magic.
5. When her boss (see answer 1) was revealed to be a werewolf and she killed him in a panic while he was distracted.

Let me know if I hosed anything up. I was updating a character from a 1e sheet rather than going from scratch so I may have missed something that should have been changed.

Hunter the Vigil is nWoD 1e right now. The book you have is, at least. Mortal Remains and the book simply called Chronicles of Darkness can be used with it to update it to work with the 2e rules. There's also a free rules update pdf on drivethrurpg, which I got.

Basically, Chronicles of Darkness is nWoD 2e.

If he's fed-affiliated, VASCU could work well, especially if you want FBI psychic powers. Null Mysteriis is good for a science-y type that is interested in trying to figure out how the weird poo poo works, if only for their own peace of mind. The Union is an internet forum of blue collar monster hunters who help each other out with advice and solidarity (and actual unionization advice). The Loyalists of Thule have a bit of a backstory required - see, their thing is that they're the descendants of a Nazi occultist group that, after the rise of the Nazis, grew to blame themselves for the Holocaust and the horrors of WW2 and have dedicated themselves to helping other monster hunters, gathering useful information and punching fascists, because never again.

I was initially thinking VASCU, but Null Mysteriis would be cool... Thinking something like he thought he'd seen everything, then he saw something he couldn't explain at work, did the tests and discovered the only explanation was something "impossible." He's come out to the desert to try to hide from what he learned, or something. Could work.

Well, fuck. Really?

John Chrietzberg

John leans back in his chair with a sigh, drumming his pen against the desk as he stares out the door to the hallway, lost in thought. Running the sole FBI office in Red Mesa, Arizona and acting as FBI Liaison to bot the Navajo Tribal Police (loads of fun there, given their typical attitude to federal agents) and the Arizona state police certainly had its quirks. The little office that had been leased for him had belonged to an insurance agent at one point in history, and amounted to little more than two offices (one of which was laughably 'the conference room,'), a storage room, a small reception area, and a closet of a bathroom. It barely broke 800 sq/ft but it was where the Federal Bureau of Investigation had decided to land John Chrietzberg, agent of seven years, after he had hosed up.

Laying the pen down, John climbed from his chair and stepped out into the hallway. The office was closed at the moment; the little old lady who sat in her little chair behind the desk by the door was at home getting ready for a bridge game. John saw no reason to deny her the day off; it's not like much happened in Red Mesa. Nothing that she would receive calls for, anyways. Making sure the door was locked and the blinds drawn, John retreats back to his office and pulls a rubber-banded folder from his desk, which had been stamped with big, red block letters that read "SHRED: CONFIDENTIAL"

Not even a year ago, he had been looking at this same file in the comfort of a much nicer office in Chicago, Illinois. It'd ended up on his desk by mistake, or so he thought at the time, and his natural curiosity which had gotten him so far before in his career had lead him to reading the most disturbing poo poo he had ever laid eyes on. At first he figured it had been a prank played by one of his coworkers, but no one seemed to know anything about the file. When he brought it before his boss, the man hadn't even looked at it before telling Chrietzberg to simply shred everything and forget about it. No laughter, no joking around, no nudge nudge wink wink that it had to all be a joke; the man hadn't seemed annoyed so much as terrified. That spoke volumes to the detective in John.

Following the leads in the file had put him in contact with Officer King of the Chicago PD, a decorated civil servant whose name had come up numerous times throughout the report. King had grown grim when John asked him about the file, and the two had met up a week later in a seedy little bar in downtown Chicago where the cop told him everything he read in there was 100% true. He showed the agent the wounds he'd suffered chasing down the monsters described in the file, and even lead him to an abandoned apartment complex where the two of them ran into one of the creatures on accident. John had discharged his assigned sidearm into the fleeing beast numerous times to no avail, a mistake that would cost him his cushy office. Jason explained to him everything he knew, which wasn't much more than was in the file, and suggested that if John wanted to protect his country and the people in it, to get in touch with a small group called The Union.

Unfortunately for John, he wouldn't get in contact with the Illinois chapter; the police had been called due to the sound of gunfire in the neighborhood, and when ballistics matched the shells to John's own firearm, the FBI stepped in to shut the investigation down as part of national security. John found himself up poo poo creek without a paddle, and it was only his stellar record that had kept him from getting shitcanned. Instead, he found himself reassigned to Arizona, with the promise that he'd use the 'vacation' to get his head together and stop chasing fairy tales.

Agent Chrietzberg chuckled. He'd added to the file since then. He'd met a member of the Navajo tribe who had dealt with weird poo poo out in the desert, and a coroner who had more than once found the dead to get back up again. He had their cards and their testimonies, all off the record for the FBI, and he knew they were in the same fight he was. There were things out there that were more than human, or looked human but had no capability for remorse or love. The media had called some of the men he'd put away monsters for the crimes they committed, but John knew, once and for all, that they were just sad imitations of the real monsters out there. Officer King had been right; he had to bring the fight to them.

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?
Mistakes happen when you're in law enforcement. Tensions are high, lives may be on the line. Deep down, John knows this. But he shot and killed a woman once, during a bust. She was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and she moved like a threat. She was unarmed. She had family.

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?
If not straight up becoming one of those monsters, then acting like one. Tearing people open and using them for spells or whatever it is they do. He gets dangerously close to it sometimes. He can think like the maniacs he's hunted down. He dreams about it every now and again, and sometimes? When he has to think like them? He buys a LOT of coffee.

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?
He can't fathom the levels people would stoop to for more power, more money, more anything. He's seen enough criminals do it. But to side with the things that go bump in the night, the beasts and monsters that prey on humanity? That's both insane AND stupid.

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten?
During the investigation that lead to his relocation to Arizona, John broke into a condemned apartment complex without a warrant. Inside, he found what he later came to believe signs of occult rituals, but what really stuck in his memory was the hideous looking humanoid creature that he caught fleeing the building. He had shot it eight times but it kept running. He never got a close look at it or its face, but it seemed human, except for the fact his gun did nothing to it. From what he's heard from members of the Union, it was likely some kind of vampire.

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?
In that same apartment complex, John found bodies eviscerated and laid out in bizarre poses and patterns in what he now believes was some arcane occult ritual. Some of the people were barely clinging to life and their groans and moans still haunt him.

Hunter template is 'can use Willpower-risking'. (And, at tier 2-3, 'is in a compact/conspiracy'.)

Minor templates are stuff like 'ghoul' or 'dhampir' or 'wolf-blooded' from the other game lines. In fact, the list, and books to learn more:

Allowed Minor Templates
Ghouls (VtR 2e)
Wolf-Blooded (WtF 2e)
Proximi (MtA 2e)
Demon-Blooded (DtD: Heirs to Hell)
Fae-Touched (CtL 2e)
Dhampir (VtR: Half-Damned)
Lost Boy (Hurt Locker) [Read: Captain America on drugs]
Atariya (Hurt Locker) [Read: luck manipulators/luck thieves]
Dreamers (Hurt Locker) [Read: God-Machine-altered sleeper agents]
Skinthieves (CofD: Dark Eras: Under the Skin) [Read: Skinchangers.]

Note: Hurt Locker in general is kind of iffy, so if you want merits from it, ask me about them.

I'm trying to decide between two character concepts:

1) A trigger-happy, drug-addled gonzo journalist who came to the desert to find peace and instead found a monster. But enough about him, there were also some vampires or something.

or

2) A straight-laced poster-boy Fed exiled to a remote VASCU branch for political reasons who'll inevitably start to crack as realizes one can't stare into the abyss indefinitely; it will either stare back or blink, and both possibilities are terrifying.

A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

Jill Berthold is vastly overqualified to work for a podunk police department in the middle of the rear end end of nowhere, with degrees in forensic medicine, biochemistry and forensic analysis. She belongs in a major metropolitan force, running DNA tests and eating bagels in the comfort of an air-conditioned office, not drowning in her own sweat trying to pull prints from a burned out meth lab. She's got the accent and prickly manners of a big city girl which makes her a little hard for locals to like. She can barely tell one end of a horse from the other, hates country music and only drives a truck because the department gave her one they'd forfeited from a felon. The only reason she's out here is the monsters. It wasn't long into her first internship that she ran into evidence of some of the common, corporeal types and started digging. An old professor introduced her to the secret society he was a member of, one that tries to categorize and explain the supernatural. The trouble started when she started passing reports on to people higher up the food chain. Back in the city the monsters can't get away with roaming the plains and killing the occasional ranch hand or drifter, they have to be a parasite on the system to survive. And when bits of the system start to notice the problem, the monsters need to shut those bits down before they get too noisy. A lone crank in a police lab is easy enough to discredit and get fired when you have the right contacts, and then it's just matter of isolating the vulnerable human and silencing it permanently.

The gas leak that blew up Jill's apartment was ruled an accident, and the insurance money kept her afloat while she tried to find a new job. Strangely, no mention of the charred bodies found in her bedroom was ever made public. Still, being fired for 'falsifying records' even when clearly facing 'debilitating mental health issues' makes it difficult to get jobs in law enforcement unless you can find somewhere desperate enough for trained personnel to ignore those black marks on your resume. So Farmington PD it was, and from there the Nowhere Squad. Sometimes, when a case gets closed and the ghosts stop bugging her, she can pretend it makes it worth being in exile.

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?

Rigged up an improvised booby trap in my old apartment with the intention of scaring off people I believed were stalking me, and loving it up real bad to the point the explosion killed them and threatened the lives of other inhabitants of the building with the ensuing fire. IEDs are more of an expert job than they seem.

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?

Some of that Mengele poo poo, getting real unethical with experiments. Monsters are bad news, but a lot of them are still people, you know? Horrible criminal people, but they don't deserve that.

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?

Premeditated murder, torture, exploitation of children...humans can be pretty loving gross.

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten?

When I was an undergrad I had a roommate who just disappeared one day. All my photos with her or any other mention of her on social media vanished at the same time. The college authorities claimed to have no record of her ever being there, but I guess they were just covering their rear end over losing a student. It was kind of a long time ago and I was drinking a lot at the time because college, woo! so maybe I just don't remember it right.
(The roommate was totally a ghost and Jill is an untrained medium)

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?
Lost my job because of loving vampires, killed two people, had to move to cowboy country to get away. Kind of lovely.

I still have to write backstory (i'll get to that today), but I was wondering about that. My character is former tier 3, but I was considering her more of tier 1 at this point. I could have her maybe joining up with the Union before the game starts since that kinda fits her now. Depends on what works better for you, Mors.

And if I played the "well she used to be TFV so she has some leftover advanced armory" the only thing I could really give her is 3 magazines of Etheric rounds that she can't ever get resupplied on.

If you want to forgo compact, that’s fine. You can also select a narrative benefit over dots or template, which can be anything that fits. One game I had a player whose character got bonus beats for being able to compare situations to anime. Narrative benefit could be ‘I still have friends in intelligence who can sometimes tell me stuff.’

The idea is to give everyone a cool unique edge, plus cut down on some dot tax.

It's less how you're aware of and more how you approach the supernatural. There are plenty of Christian hunters, for example, but only the ones who are going to fervently believe in the fundamentalist end of days strain of American Christianity are going to join the Long Night. You have a low-key werewolf kink but because you valid science over being dumb as hell you work with NM over the Abbey. And some people who work for the government would rather feed tips to their Union brothers because they'll actually use the actionable info without the shackles of bureaucracy and big government inherent to TFV.

Sarah Stein, San Juan County Patrol Deputy
I just wanted to work the family ranch, like the three generations before me. But when I turned 17, my dad took me out to the old shed on the back forty. Explained *how* great-grandad Stein made the money he used to buy the ranch. Explained the debt our family owed.

I didn't want to deal with that... ugliness. So much so that I ended up in the Army, fighting in Afghanistan. Saw some nastiness over there, reminders about what happens when good men do nothing. Met the Old Man while he was working an archeological site my squad was patrolling, he got me in touch with the rest of the Loyalists.

Dad died before I mustered out, leaving the ranch to my little brother. He left me his library though, knowing at some point I would accept the burden. I do help out on the ranch when I can, but as much as I 'd like to ignore it, I know I need to be out there. Walking the line, paying off the debt one horror at a time.

Unlike alot of the deputies, I actually enjoy the back-country patrols. Especially the ones that require a horse. I've never been the best at dealing with other people, so being able to help them while enjoying the solitude of the scrubland appeals to me.

1. What is the worst thing your character has ever done, from their own perspective?
-I walked out on Dad when he told me about the family history. Just threw some stuff in a bag and kept going until I was in Basic. He died before I got my poo poo together, never heard my apology.

2. What is the worst thing your character can imagine themselves doing?
-Becoming like Great-Grandad. Not just ignoring the darkness, but helping it. Enjoying it.

3. What is the worst thing your character can imagine someone else doing?
-Killing the innocent and defenceless.

4. What strange, inexplicable or otherwise supernatural event has your character forgotten? (Everyone in the World of Darkness has run into weird poo poo. Most people repress, forget or just move on.)
-Great-grandad isn't as dead as the family thinks, he and I had a chat on day when I was a kid. He showed me fear in a handful of dust.

5. What is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to your character?
-The transport I was hitching a ride back to NM on crashed in the mountains. Four years in the Army, and my closest brush with death was 150 miles from home. The copilot and I were fine, but the pilot took nasty shrapnel and bleed out while I was pulling him out of the wreckage.

It's more like how organized you are in responding to the monsters. Hunters operating on the level of personal relationships and partnerships small enough to meet in their garage are tier one. Hunters who band into organizations large enough to need bureaucracy and membership lists and contacts are operating on tier two. Tier three applies to hunter organizations whose support bases are well equipped enough to draw upon unique advantages (VALKYRIE, VASCU, the Aegis Kai Doru) and occasionally hunter phenomenons whose unique advantages, regardless of their level of organization, connect them and equip them in excess of normal human capacity (the Lucifuge, the Cainite Heresy).

An individual character on tier one could be very experienced, and an individual VALKYRIE grunt could be a rookie with an electrogun and little idea what he's going up against beyond what briefings he receives. You don't forget about VALKYRIE and their technology when you leave the force, but you certainly lose access to their reinforcements, intelligence, and electroguns.

A character with one of the other templates Mors just posted is roughly punching on the capability level of a tier three hunter, at least as far as their unique advantages are concerned.

Thinking about a VASCU FBI agent from a Space/Mind Proximi lineage themed around puzzles, labyrinths, and the Minotaur. The kind of person who's always fiddling with a Rubik's cube or practicing speed chess and never, ever gives up on an investigation before it's solved.

I'm not allowing a mix of VASCU and Proximus unless you give up your bonus Teleinformatics dots.
