Just finished it. Thinking back to the first few episodes feels like a lifetime ago, even though it's just been a couple of weeks. I didn't think I'd like the first OP the best, but the last line of the third is really good. For some reason "Lay your heart down onto the sea of the stars" really resonates with me. Makes up for the rest of them entirely. The guy who badgered me into finally watching this loving hates Julian, and I don't get why. SERIES-WIDE SPOILERS I'd assumed after Yang's death that Julian was going to loving lose it and start betraying Yang's ideals all over the place, but instead he just fulfilled the role admirably. He's not ridiculously good at his job, either - the first tactical victory he gets over the Empire largely worked because they didn't know what to make of him (as far as I remember, it's all a bit of a blur) and the second was because every Imperial Admiral was looking towards a bedridden Reinhardt for orders. It didn't come off as incredibly implausible, considering we've been shown that he's got a level head and a great sense of tactical timing from his first time in a Spartanian. I've been reading a bit of the thread, and most people agree that the fourth season takes a distinct dip in quality, and I disagree. It only slows down in comparison to the first three seasons, and even then it seemed like a big part of the point. A "genuine" tragedy, one that wasn't invested in looking at the political situation beyond a surface level, probably would have ended with a slightly altered version of S3's finale. Yang and Reinhard would both die in combat, in a way that affirms or denies both of their ideals and beliefs, big explosions and tears and we all go home sad. Instead, it's like everyone starts waking up from a fever dream. The tragedy everyone expected and demanded disappeared with Yang's uneventful, pointless death - they'd all begun to believe in the narrative of the story as an inviolate thing, almost like they looked at Phezzan at the beginning of the season. It was something untouchable, something that felt like it was made by the galaxy itself - but then it was killed with only the cost of a few Imperial uniforms and a couple destroyers. The story first shows us this type of thinking via the Phezzan Corridor, and the fact that it's an autonomous zone, and that both sides treat it with utter respect and don't even think about loving with it. We understand it logically, and move on. When the Terraists kill Yang, that's when we're taught how that phenomenon works on a deeper level. Millions have died, all in the service of one of these two giants, they're players on a galactic scale, and then some jackass with a stolen uniform shoots one of them in the leg and the dream's over, and all that's left are a bunch of bereaved families and a whole lot of boring nonsense to attend to. That's what I came to love most about this show. It didn't just tell you about the reasons behind war, and why people fight and kill eachother - it genuinely tries to make you understand how the big important reasons anyone has for killing millions of people can be summed up in a single pithy sentence and otherwise ignored. You might have the most beautiful motivation in the world, something that you can no longer live without, but in the end you killed millions of people because you made a promise to your dead friend. This is all rambling because I'm still kinda offkilter from finishing the series, but man that was a good show.

People on earlier pages commented about whether to consider the history documentary episodes filler or not. Perhaps they are filler, but they're easily among my absolute favourite episodes in anime. Even if it's ham-fisted world building, I can't help but enjoy them, especially with some mirrors to our own world. Others might not notice, but I checked and saw that and was like "Oh, that explains it." Honestly, it's fine. It's not incompetent or anything, just prose that is clearly not within any natively English idiom.

It can be frustrating but it gets better when you realize that the ascension of Reinhardt, Yang, and their associates to prominence in their factions also leads to a massive culling process of lovely idiots who owe their positions to nothing but nepotism. Eventually the idiots get killed or thrown out (mostly) and you get to watch the actually competent characters square off against each other.

It is a staple character arc LoGH employs, and does it often enough that I have to consider it a fault: to introduce a major character, and show you how good they are, they are shown either fighting alongside or against complete idiots in order to look good by comparison. It breaks immersion (you'd expect two powers who have been at war for over a century to have at least figured the basics of warfare out) and it makes the geniuses of the series feel less than they are supposed to be (Reinhard's a genius... but only because the entire rest nobility class is borderline worthless, really, and it doesn't really take a genius to surpass them). I get that we're seeing both the Empire and the Alliance at a point in time where their leadership has grown decadent and incompetent, but it's a narrative device that's used a bit too frequently, in my opinion. The silver lining in there is that by the halfway point the cast has become generally well-established and so those plot threads also thin out.

Part of it is that both sides have gotten used to the war as just the status quo, and it's politically useful for leadership on both sides. No one actually wants to win the war, just use it for their own advancement or prestige on the imperial side, and increasing authoritarianism on the alliance side. At least that's what I recall from watching it quite a few years ago. That's partly why there's so much resistance to both Reinhard and Yang in the beginning: they're upsetting the apple cart. It's a bit like Star Trek's "A Taste of Armageddon."

Reinhard disrupts their coordination with heavy jamming and then defeats each fleet in detail with aggressive attacks that break the FPA's timetable and get inside their OODA loop. Its a textbook example of concentration of force and how a smaller but better coordinated unit can achieve decisive local superiority over a larger one.

Over a century of war has consistently rewarded cynical political opportunists with authority. Both nations' power structures are degraded by the fact that they're ruled by people who considered personal advancement their foremost goal and rewarded subordinates who were personally loyal. They take it for granted that the stalemate will last forever. Only when Yang captures Iserlohn Fortress do they realize that the war can change and even be won, that is, that it can be anything besides a club for nobles to play at chivalry and politicians to manipulate public opinion. (Reinhard, of course, realizes that from the beginning, and takes action to make it happen.) Naturally, this realization shakes the Alliance more profoundly, since they depend on public opinion rather than authority to maintain control. All the dupes who were completely taken in by Trünicht's jingoism saw this as their opportunity to fulfill their dream, and the result was Parker's invasion of the Empire, and the result was so devastating that the rest of the series was inevitable.
