I downloaded the free trial of ki just to see what the game was like and i cant seem to find a systems tutorial. I found some mission type stuff and training under a heading called "master" tho. At least i got to be a battle toad as the free rotating character even if i have no clue about anything.

isn't the tutorial under "dojo" or something like that? Unless that's not in the free trial

I bought that game myself, as far as I can tell the community is scattered around discords, of varying levels of embarrassing to hang around in. There's a thread here for the game but it's not too active right now. People tend to do player matches over ranked, so as long as you stick to that you should find players still.

It's okay, most of the NA players just run off and 1v1 people, so there's rarely teamwork!

Talk to the mittens.

This is why I love the fighting game crowd, so good at ironic comedy :ocelot:

This is irrelevant to my previous point because he's not talking about a fighting game but reading someone talking about a person breaking under pressure from a lawsuit while themselves having a complete meltdown from simply being banned from a local Smash Bros "scene" is just amazing and certainly worthy of the RESPECT he is most certainly entitled to.

Has there ever been a decent attempt at making a two "lane" fighting game? In the same way some 2D brawlers used to work but in a fighting game.
I'm just curious if that's something that could ever work in a good fighting game.

The earlier Fatal Fury games had a "plane" system where you could step in or out of the background (which sometimes had hazards that you could knock your foes into). In FF3 they changed this to the three-plane "Oversway System", and in Garou they removed it entirely.

One Nation, Under God.
All the Fatal Fury games before Garou had a plane system - some have two planes, some have three; some let you freely move across planes and others only let you dodge into them or whatever, they tried all sorts of poo poo and the console ports would mess with things further. The Real Bout games are okay but the original few Fatal Fury games aren't very good.

Treasure made a Yuyu Hakusho fighting game for Megadrive with lane switching, and they reused that same system for the Saturn beat em up Guardian Heroes, which has a fighting game mode (and in the XBLA version they give you the option of playing with updated systems - air dashing, magic series, etc). I think their Bleach games for DS do the same thing but it's been a while.

There are a few fighting games that use beat em up-style free movement: Saturday Night Slam Masters (okay), Aggressors of Dark Kombat (mediocre), Power Moves (complete trash), probably more.

EDIT: Guilty Gear Isuka!

Yo. About 2 years ago I posted here about a Zelda meets Street Fighter fighting game I'm making, and I've still been working on the concept. The mechanics are a lot more tuned to FGs, though the pace is still more Towerfall than Street Fighter. I've brought this to more FG tournaments, and I've gotten a good response. I've also met one Milwaukee FG local groups, brought the game, and they thought it was cool, too. Oh, also I got an article written about me taking the game on tour to make it a better fighting game, so I'm trying to drum up some more interest especially in the Midwest. I've toured the game through WI, IL, IA, and MN, and I'm still looking for more events to do that're drivable from Milwaukee where I develop. Check it out if you would like:

Me vs. one of the Wisco FGC folks I met - this explains a lot of the intricate parts involving blocking and attack swings

At the M+Dev Game Developer Conference pre-party - this one is just chaos. There are a lot of Wisco gamedevs rotating in and out of this, so some are interested in competitive games, and others aren't. Also this is running at a higher resolution on my (old dGPU having) desktop

At least you can kind of actually see what's going on in the game now. But while it's better than before, you still need to work on visual clarity. Start by making the character sprites REALLY contrast with the environment's colors. Also, having armor that covers them up completely when they are facing the other way is a bad move. The weapon select screen is a lot better.

It's way past the point where poo poo like color contrast is going to fix the readability of the game. Sloppy isometric voxels just don't work. We said that 2 years ago also, when it wasn't too late, but welp.

Also, dude, if you're gonna lie about "demoing your game with FGC people in the midwest" you could at least say that the groups you're demoing it to are people who play smash or FG groups who have a large smash focus and maybe play other things.

I think it could theoretically work but the voxels have to be way WAY bigger, in addition to better color contrast.
All the aliasing doesn't help the already busy silhouettes either.

~ i'll take you for a ride ~ ride on a meteorite ~
The creation of a 2d world in which all space can be controlled and there are objective truths that can solve all of the issues in that world is problematic on its own. It reeks of Positivism and a lack of reflexive understanding of the self, and when that ideology is imprinted on the player, problems ensue. I’m not going to quote Nietzsche at length or anything, but it stands that the kind of reasoning and Being that fighting games engender is problematic because it does not reflect the real world.
