Last night Caristico and Mistico were on opposing sides at Lucha Libre Boom and they started feuding. Volador was on Caristico's team and had problems with him, so Caristico was working full heel. After the match Mistico challenged Caristico to one more fall, mano a mano. In the fall, which seemed to be short, Caristico escaped La Mistica, kicked Mistico in the groin, and pulled his mask. Then they agreed to do a 2/3 falls singles match at the next show. I was especially impressed with Lilith Dark here. Fuego, Guerrero Maya Jr., Titán vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón - CMLL - 9/30/17 - GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6ft7aj9eYQ La Nueva Generación Dinamita battles all of your mid-card favorites in a regular trios match on a regular Guadalajara show. No weaknesses, just a good time. Soberano Jr. vs Barbaro Cavernario (Mexican Welterweight) - CMLL - 10/2/17 - EXCELLENT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGRakZPC6c4&t=6056s The Year of Soberano rolls on as CMLL lets an Arena Puebla title match go 30+ minutes including a 20 minute third fall. Both guys are at the top of their game and they go hard. Mexico City vs. Guadalajara Cibernetico - CMLL - 10/3/17 - FUN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvc7khAMWAg This one's 6 vs 6 teams of undercard guys whose matches you usually skip over. I was impressed most by Star Jr, Oro Jr, Star Black, and Flyer, and the cibernetico format means you're going to have a good time. Not as much drama as you'd want, but the wrestling's good. Toreno de la Leyenda de Plata - CMLL - 10/13/17 - GREAT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oOd5xAMaOc&t=4602s Not necessarily willing to go full MOTYC for this one, but it was an honorable mention for sure. There were some bits towards the end where everyone was blown up, and that hurt a bit. But the good parts were really good and the delivered on what you really want out of the match: unusual match-ups. Lucha Libre Boom had teased Caristico/Mistico the week before, and now it's shown up on the big show. That will be one they tease for a long time, slowly, and it will probably never happen, but for now I can dream that it's the main event of the 85th Anniversary show next September.

Match Recs 11/1 Soberano Jr. vs Bandido – Lucha Memes – 10/1/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bskme_FNRb0 Soberano Jr. is one of the best wrestlers in the world in 2017. This match-up is a solid exhibition of highlights that takes advantage of Coliseo Coacalco to be something different from the big CMLL matches that Soberano’s already had this year. The match is 100% worth watching for Bandido doing an apron to floor headscissors that throws Soberano into a guy in the front row, completely destroying him and his drink. In the end, they only go 10 minutes, Soberano hurts his hand, and there’s no finish. If they put these guys in the main event and give them 20 minutes, I think they could have another one for Soberano’s highlight reel. Laredo Kid, Mascarita Dorada & Arkangel Divino vs Steve Pain, Demus & Último Maldito – The Crash – 10/5/2017 – GREAT +Lucha Highlight – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxTACjpN_u4 Full Match – https://www.patreon.com/posts/monkey-members-4-14807823 (Konnan’s Patreon) Much of the standard undercard for The Crash is about booking the most impressive flip and dive wrestlers and encouraging them to sprint for 8 minutes doing the best things they can think of. This match is a perfect example of that, and then they even take a few minutes afterward to build towards an interesting possible singles encounter. The dives in this one are outstanding, Laredo Kid is great, and Arkangel Divino brings it home with a double at the end. Flamita vs The King (Rey Fénix) – The Crash – 10/5/2017 – GREAT +Lucha Highlight – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkl3NlQRJ0c Full Match – https://www.patreon.com/posts/monkey-members-4-14807882 (Konnan’s Patreon) I liked this one more than the one from September. The opening minutes were really my favorite, I can always get behind the long counter exchanges where neither wrestler can get a solid hit in. The match still didn’t get all the way there for me because I thought the closing sequence was awkward. Still, enough quality on the whole to make it over the line from “good” to “great.” Panthers vs Dinamitas Trilogy – CMLL – 10/2017 – GOOD 10/3 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m65I4xHLxSA 10/10 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dABwtrpBOJk 10/17 [Mex Trios] – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwUy3ICel1Q Blue Panther, Blue Panther Jr., and The Panther battled Sansón, Cuatrero, and Forastero three weeks in a row on the Tuesday Guadalajara show. The matches are all good and all different. They take advantage of the possibilities that are available for match structure and falls in lucha trios rules, ones that you don’t usually see. Blue Panther is still going in 2017 and La Nueva Generación Dinamita gets under the skin of the Panther family so bad that they start going for the Dinamitas’ masks. The build to the title match is good and the end leaves room for the rivalry to continue, which it almost certainly will. Lilith Dark & Dulce Luna vs Lady Cat & Princesa Shira – IWRG – 10/11/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NOxc1BtuyA Really solid Wednesday mid-card IWRG match. All four women do a good job, but especially Lilith Dark and Lady Cat. This is a good match to watch if you want to see wrestlers destroying each other with different kinds of dropkicks. It’s difficult for me to believe that nobody was hurt taking some of them. Be on the look out for the most devastating Do-si-do I’ve seen in wrestling. Lilith Dark vs Ludark – IWRG – 10/22/2017 – GREAT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dohokx0NukM IWRG has these one-fall ten-minute lightning-equivalent matches on most shows and they are usually good, but this one is even better than usual. Ludark and Lilith Dark, ruda vs ruda, stiff the crap out of each other, then drop each other on their heads for good measure. A tope goes wrong a little, but it ends up working in the “both wrestlers take so much punishment that did one of them really win in the end?” fashion.

Lacey Lane replaced Diosa Quetzal on this tour and she can hold her own. Entertaining lower card match. Flamita vs Sammy Guevara - GOOD - Fun short match with a lot of impressive dives. Blue Demon Jr., Penta 0M, Rey Mysterio 619 vs Carlito, Garza Jr., La Máscara - SKIPPABLE - House show trios main events aren't my thing. They brawl all over the building and the cell phone video quality is really not great, but they do send everyone home happy. 11/4 - Sixth Anniversary Show - Auditorio de Tijuana - Tijuana Keyra vs Christi Jaynes vs Lacey Lane vs Baronessa [The Crash WOMEN] - FUN - Pretty bummed this one only got seven minutes on the big show, but everyone did their best with the time allotted. Many cool big moves. La Máscara vs Penta Zero M vs Rush vs Rey Mysterio 619 [The Crash HEAVY] - GOOD - Not the best-worked match because of the nature of the four-way format and the brawling style of Los Ingobernables, but still a good time. All four guys are rightful, legitimate mega-stars and they get the packed house going. The one-on-one breakdowns, for the short time they each last, is a taste of a solid dream match, so if anything you end up wanting to watch more Crash in hopes that they put any combination from this match as a singles main event down the line. Bestia 666 vs Jack Evans [hair] - EPIC - Link goes to the 13 minute meat of the match, 13 wild minutes. Jack Evans is still insane in 2017 at 35 years old. There's also a full match video from ringside but it's shakier and harder to watch. I'd say just watch the better quality clip then switch over to the other one to see the haircut post-match. 11/5 - Gimnasio Nuevo Leon Unidad - Monterrey Flamita, Flip Gordon, Último Ninja vs Laredo Kid, Sammy Guevara, Shane Strickland - Highlight of what seemed to be a very good match 11/6 - Poliforum La Fe - Nuevo Laredo Penta Zero M & Rey Fénix vs Hanson & Ray Rowe vs Bestia 666 & Black Taurus - Enough of a highlight to know the match was good. My favorite part was the Black Taurus dive. Brian Cage, Daga, Rey Mysterio 619 vs La Máscara, Pierroth, Rush - SKIPPABLE - Another house show main event. It was neat to see both my Large Boy Brian Cage and my Handsome Boy Daga mix it up with Rush, but you won't be missing anything if you don't have 20 minutes to spend on a shaky cell phone video. 11/11 - Arena Naucalpan - Naucalpan Astrolux, Atomic Star, Pegazus vs Black Dragón, Látigo, Torito Negro - GOOD - Opening sprint where everyone worked hard to get the crowd going. Really strong dives. Arkángel Divino, Black Boy, Black Danger, Último Maldito vs Aramis, Dinamic Black, Fly Warrior, Toxin - GOOD - Plenty of sloppy moments in this one, but they made up for it with some of the most insane and creative dives I've seen in a while. Keyra, Lacey Lane, Máscarita Dorada vs Christi Jaynes, Demus 3:16, Tiago - BAD - Real garbage here. It's one thing to have a rudo like Demus trying to kiss opposing women, but when the start of the match is tecnico Máscarita Dorada kissing Christi Jaynes against her will, you've lost me. A normal wrestling match would have been just fine, in fact the actual wrestling in the match was fine. The kissing stuff was offensive. Daga vs Último Ninja - SKIPPABLE - This one was okay, but didn't really get all the way there. Some impressive stuff, and the mat sounded really hard on the video I watched so that added to the impact moves, but a lot of sloppy parts. (alt link) Carlito, Jack Evans, M-ximo vs Bestia 666, Black Taurus, Hijo de Pirata Morgan - FUN - A toss-up between fun and skippable, this was just a match but everyone did a good job and it was short enough that it didn't wear out its welcome. Garza Jr. vs La Máscara vs Penta Zero M - FUN - Another match that ended up just clearing the bar into feeling like it was worth my time. Too much was on the outside away from the spectator recording and that hurt, but there were enough moments that I enjoyed. The story of the match putting Penta against the odds, seeing some more famous luchadores visit La Famosa Esquina Fria, Garza bleeding all over the place, and just the right amount of goofiness for the occasion. 11/14 - Domo de la Feria - León Lacey Lane, Máscarita Dorada, Tiago vs Black Danger, Demus 3:16, Keyra - BAD - Re-read what I wrote above about the prior Dorada/Demus/Lacey/Keyra encounter. Enough with this.

Here's my lastest recs: Bandido vs Eterno – Mexa Wrestling – 10/21/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC8EhxOMNSE Very professional match that isn’t breaking any new ground but you can hold it up as an example of a well done match in the Mexican indie style. I might put it higher if I hadn’t seen this type of match so many times already this year. They did have some cool mat work in the beginning that stood out to me. Also, Bandido is only 22 years old. Pantera I vs Arez [IWRG IC Light] – IWRG – 11/2/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqYERY_FqOw As I read back these write-ups, I keep seeing that I’m obsessed with the ages of the wrestlers. In this case, Pantera I is 53 years old and he’s trying to defend the IWRG Intercontinental Lightweight championship against solid journeyman Arez. Pantera needs every bit of his veteran wiles here. Interesting match structure, some cool moves, a good time. Halcón 78 Jr. & Scorpió 2.0 vs Tiburón (Veracruz) & Xibalba – AAA – 11/3/2017 – FUN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_kTUQycV5g This is the kind of match I love to find. It’s a 6 minute TV match featuring four guys I’ve never heard of, and I clicked on it because I had a few minutes to kill. It seems to be a dark match that they had time to air. Tiburón and Xibalba are awesome here. I don’t know if they would have what it takes to go long, but they have enough to go all out as “large guys doing lucha flips and throws” in the allotted time. The técnicos don’t get much, but you gotta take what you can get. Solar & Super Astro vs Black Terry & Virus – CMLL – 11/17/2017 – GREAT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEq2AkosYQo&t=57m4s Exactly what you want out of a match on a legends show. Really solid mat work that culminates in whatever crazy knot submission holds the guys can think of. I wish Negro Navarro could have been in this one but you’ll never see me complaining about Virus being involved in this kind of match. Volador Jr., Dragón Lee, Rush vs Último Guerrero, Gran Guerrero, Euforia – CMLL – 11/17/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEq2AkosYQo&t=1h43m52s The Legends matches earlier on the card were going too long, so they told these guys to go out there and have a sprint. It really helps the match. Things get going quickly, the crowd is hot, and the chemistry of the Volador/Lee/Rush team is undeniable. It has everything you need. Dragón Lee, Soberano Jr., Ángel de Oro vs Sansón, Cuatrero, Forastero – CMLL – 11/20/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AH0hdGMFTc&t=1h16m57s Five of the six wrestlers in this match are between 21 and 24 years old (Ángel is 29). This is incredible for the future of lucha. All of the young wrestlers are so good already. Soberano is in the conversation for best of 2017. While this match doesn’t completely tear the house down due to the slot it’s in, it’s a match that’s worth your time. Astral, Flyer, Robin vs Akuma, Espanto Jr., Templario – CMLL – 11/21/2017 – GREAT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmrTtZ1y-wk&t=21m45s As good a second match on a Tuesday night as you’ll ever see. Guys that are veterans at this level and usually do fine, but with missteps. In this one, though, everything syncs up and they go to the next level. Everybody makes up wild moves and they don’t mess any up, with perfect timing. The best Martes de Nuevos Valores match in a while.

Watch some lucha matches over the long weekend: Drone, Fuego, Stigma vs Felino, Puma, Tiger – CMLL – 10/31/2017 – FUN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lm6w8j5lcQ Tuesday Guadalajara mid-card match where everyone is having a good time. Drone does two really cool dives, then botches a basic spot. Felino is in above average form. Fuego tries to show his bare rear end to the crowd. Volador Jr. vs Último Guerrero – CMLL – 10/31/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arNXk52qPII I was going to leave this one off the list because this is the 14th iteration of this match, including the third in 2017. It is a very good match. My memory stinks but I have to believe the other two versions this year were better. The first was in Japan and the second was a tournament final in Arena Mexico on a Friday. So if you didn’t see those, or you don’t mind seeing what you expect to see in a match, this one is worth the time. Flamita vs Bandido – TSW – 11/18/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLFCDeSBi8o A solid match with two solid guys wrestling this solid style. There’s a little bit of innovation, but there’s also every guaranteed Mexican Indie Junior move you expect. Maybe if I only watched “this match” once every quarter I would like them all more, but seeing it once or twice a month has devalued it some. MVP vs Xtreme Tiger – MDA – 11/19/2017 – FUN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBlFib-sdZY Watching this and reviewing Wikipedia, I am fairly certain that this is the first time I’ve ever seen an MVP match. I have no idea if, historically, he is good. But he was good here. Short, standard-ish “small fast guy vs. big power guy” match, but MVP played his role well and his power moves looked good. The power bombs he gave Tiger in this match looked extremely painful. Mr. Niebla vs Caifán – Lucha Memes – 11/20/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dL-jejmG1c The Naucalpan crowd is here for Mr. Niebla. You can see several wearing his masks and they are loud in their support. Caifán takes advantage of this and spends the first several minutes destroying Niebla, making him bleed. They brawl over all sides of the arena, into the Cold Corner, really working the hot crowd. This is not a technical match at all but it’s still really entertaining and an easy recommendation. Dragón Lee vs Bárbaro Cavernario – CMLL – 11/21/2017 – GOOD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiycutfFnyw Solid singles outing between two of CMLL’s brightest young stars, considering it’s the fourth time they’ve met in 2017. Nice to see Cavernario is not destroying his knees doing the post-to-floor splash in every match these days.
