there’s something weird with my Apple maps every day when I leave work, heading home, it tells me I will make X minutes to “Random person’s name” (some neighbor I don’t know) He shows up in my map but nowhere else(not a business name), I don’t have contact with him, he’s far enough that we can’t share WiFi networks... It’s weird. I’m tempted to go knock on his door and ask why hes showing up in my Apple maps and why iOS wants me to meet him every weekday

PalmOS was literally a clone of the classic Mac OS down to the use of the A-line dispatcher and a midstream switch to RISC with emulation and mixed-mode support it may have been slightly better in not providing system global state indiscriminately to apps, but it was very much cut from the same mold and likely would’ve needed a similar level of effort as Carbon to come up with an API that would work with more modern underpinnings

macos should also have been revised in a much better way, the osx switch was a hugely finicky task because it was so late that they had little choice but to take a very radical approach apple tried at a resonable time (1988 iirc), but i don't really believe that the failure is a sign that it is not doable, just that they vacillated between too minor updates (what was actually released) and infighting over too unfocused and ambitious projects (pink)

poty posted:i read about palm quite a bit following the gruber post they really had a high-quality original product. with better marketing they could have gone far it was a little more than marketing that killed them...though yeah now i remember they had some weeeiiiird fuckin commercials being sprint exclusive at first likely did a lot to hamper them. but I suspect that exclusivity deal was necessary to even get on the market in time looking back, the hardware was too slow and/or webos wasn't well optimized enough. the pixi in particular was just a bad idea and I shouldn't have bought one. absolutely dogshit slow, no wifi so I was stuck with sprint for connectivity (lmao), and the screen was almost but not quite uselessly small. oh yeah and the camera was barely better than what the treos had, took almost as long to launch, too. ugh. still it was amazing just how much they did get right. but without enough success palm ran out of steam and welp, then HP hosed everything up.

I remember when I had a Blackberry someone showed me some webos device, must’ve been around or before the iPhone launch. it was really decent, the UI was surprisingly easy to figure out considering I’d never used one before and hadn’t used an iPhone, but every interaction was still far too choppy. I distinctly remember the Swipe up to show app cards like iPhone X does 10 years later

i never really understood the appeal of fake meat on the other hand i buy soyrizo (lentil and soymeal with chorizo seasoning), so maybe im a hypocrite since that's riffing off something with pork in it, but the appeal to that is the seasonings, not the meat itself  i just don't get "vegan bacon" or why veggie patties get dyed and branded "vegan hamburger"

when people talk about palm loving itself to death theyre talking about how it managed to fumble away its almost unimaginable lead in the smartphone race by doing things like splitting itself into two companies (hardware and software), which led to huge delays internally (as the corp reorganzied itself), huge brand confusion, and a collapse in their reputation for quality (shipping palm treo phones running winmo5 will do that). eventually they gave up and merged the two companies again (creating delays and further muddling the brand) palm also demonstrated the first ever netbook (the foleo) and had a potentially huge advantage in that space (when netbooks were the next big hotness) and then they cancelled it before making any i will give them credit for realizing that the iphone was a game changer and they needed to radically redo their entire product line to meet it, which was unlike microsoft (ballmer openly laughed at it) or rim (thought it was a gyspy illusion, fought back by shipping the storm), and webos is still being borrowed from for its ui. too bad they were out of money and time and market power to make ir successful (those weird-rear end ads didnt help either)
