The Above contains everything that can be, and so does this fragment of it. Spirits far and close reach their power out, grab onto an Essence, and pull. Soon Things emerge from the mass, and undefined becomes defined. An unbelievably vast trove of matter. The five finally complete their ascension.

Essences:
Each essence embodies certain Ideas and opposes some others, from this you can get a idea how they might behave. These properties aren't absolute, the Forms the Essences manifest in are many, and all different. Still, whenever an Essence is utilised for a cause it tends to empower it's embodied Ideas in the outcome, and diminish it's opposed Ideas.

The gods take in their prize and the shine of the Above sets them aflame with vision and power. It is too late to return to perpetual existence in the Below, but who could even want to, after seeing this, after being here.

Larien Lightbearer, Goddess of Hope
Mygda, Goddess of Fruit
Pseye, God of Mind
Ravid, Goddess of Edges
Solomna Goddess of Silence

They stand supreme on the Middle... Supreme but not the first. Life has already taken root on the land.

--

The first creature to be seen is the easygoing Trombac in a brass valley. Having noticed movement it begins descending from it's perch atop a Jewel formation. The slow Snalloy doesn't have time to notice what's happening before the Trombac's jaws clamp shut around it. The creature steadily applies pressure until the prey's shell shatters with terrible noise.

The Trombac is a creature of Brass. Solid as metal but not the fastest animal on the Middle. They are highly communial and careless, most Trombac deaths are caused by lack of foresight, not enemies. That does also mean there isn't much they are afraid of. They can be made into anything you might want.

Underneath the valley a Paraiba patrols the dark caves. It stops after finding a suitable jewel growing from the wall. One squeeze from the big claw shatters the treasure, and the small claw picks the shards one by one into the creature's mouth. The Paraiba scuttles back through the tunnels, tirelessly chewing the jewel into finer and finer dust, until it is home. It regurgitates the Liquid Crystal into the growing pool. In the bottom of the clear fluid it's offspring is already taking shape.

Paraiba is a Jewel creature. They are very strong, yet brittle and can grow to massive sizes. They are creatures of routine and patience, and don't cope with changes well. Most stay underground where they have been left alone so far, but you could drive them to the surface to break or build as you please.

A dark shape dives into the liquid Crow of the ink river. Soon the Quith resurfaces, holding a squirming Blotling in it's beak. Rather than consume it's prey, it delivers it to another creature hidden nearby. The Quith's friend has devolved into an immobile blob of Crow. No need for limbs when someone else is willing to take care of you.

The Quith are Crow creatures, and they are very adaptible. The Quith's body contains only a few solid parts, the rest is semisolid Crow that can reshape over time to fit it's current needs. Their ability to cope with different enviroments, quick minds and flight have made them the most widespread species on the early Middle. Still, they remain mediocre, for they tend to forget and lose as much as they gain.

A herd of Munchega roams the felt plains. The matted stuff is edible, but only barely. The herd has their sights set on something better, the airy tufts of Wool growing tall over there. The first of the animals reaches the tuft, its his favourite color! Life couldn't be better. Unfortunately the rest of the herd hasn't noticed he's stopped. Another Muchega walks into him, knocking him off balance and the whole herd goes down like a line of dominoes. None are alarmed by the accident but for now they are stuck flailing their limbs around like noodles, trying to right themselves.

The Munchega are Wool people. They are happy to maintain a distance from the events of the world. Even when said events are happening right in front of them. They seek entertainment but are very passive for now, you could put goals in their lives. They can bounce back from almost anything.

A Munchega lies dead. A tall, transparent form creeps close to it. A lucky day. The Nilthos bends over, bringing the tip of it's body in contact with the corpse. The tendril passes through and into the flesh like it wasn't there. The creature cackles to itself as it sucks the carcass dry of Ghost. Satisfied, it straigthens itself and retreats back into the lake of Ectoplasm. The felt around the ghostly pool is dead and gray. No solid ones dare to follow the Nilthos into it's depths.

Nilthos are Ghost... people? They can phase through most matter although doing so is exhausting, like diving. They make their homes in the lakes of liquid Ghost, Ectoplasm, dotting the Middle, where they hide most of the time, for they are quite fragile. Eventually they emerge to seek, or make, dead animals to drain of Ghost. They lack what might be called a natural life cycle, but as they feed they grow and eventually tear into pieces that form into more Nilthos. They are potentially intelligent, but for now see no purpose in existence beyond feeding.

And that's the Middle! As it currently stands at least. It is now time to change it.

Gods
  • Pick one People, focus your Action on them. The mere fact that you focus on them will uplift them to sentience and kick off their culture, regardless of the success of your roll.
  • Your Action each turn has to be focused on People - you can't just create a storm, you need to storm SOMEONE.
  • Each God can pick whatever People they want - you don't have to split up.
  • You don't need to stick with the same People each time! Next turn you can totally affect someone else, if you want.
  • Even if two God's actions are in opposition, they both happen. The higher roll takes priority, but side-effects will spin off from the other roll. Everyone's decisions matter.
  • Keep in mind they're basically cavemen. Telling them to build a spaceship won't end with them succeding.
  • Your god will die, but your legacy will live on. Make it a legacy you're proud of! ...Or live on in ancestral fear!

If you didn't make it in as a god yet don't despair! you are still a spirit. Even if you didn't even try to be a god, all are welcome.

Spirits
  • You can give a vote to one of the gods each turn to change their dice roll.
  • You have the following votes to sped per era: +1, +1, -1, 0.
  • You gain a Spirit Point for each vote you give. You get to add your points to your roll for becoming a god in a later era!

Pseye, Mind

Life.

The ethereal presence that was Pseye, gazed upon that which was called 'Life'. An odd thing. A material thing. A messy thing, leading a messy existence. Lacking grace, style or order.

Yes. It was decided. Life was disgusting and ugly. It was an inferior thing. It was not a vessel worthy of thought, for certainly it would be that the purity of thought, of Mind, would be sullied by their drives, their instincts, their physical needs. Only the unliving, the orderly crystal that changed not. The ghostly essences that roiled, but not due to instinct or whimsy, but guided by beautiful universal law. Free of need, free of doubt. Free of the burdensome shackles that were part of this so-called life.

Yes.

Only these immaculate vessels would be pure enough to hold a Self, pure enough for a Mind to remain whole and unmolested by less wholesome influence. A Self that exist only for itself. A Self that can think, and contemplate, free of the vices of life. Only they would be good enough to possess the first Minds.

And thus would it be.

Pseye finds that Minds can only remain pure an unsullied if not bothered by the trite needs of living things. Thus Pseye makes a bunch of rocks bearing its Sigil to be the first truly sentient Minds to think and observe.
Taking Jewels for their Elegance, and infusing them with Ghost for its Thought: thus are created the first Minds: 11

Since they're created from Jewel with some Ghost infusion, these rocks will first manifest near the Paraiba I'd imagine, if a target people are needed for this action.

Larien looked upon the works of her fellow goddesses, and *sigh* Psye, and found them good. Rising from the darkness of Below, she sought always to return to the light of Above and felt sorry for the Paraiba in their dark caves. With them she would share her most jealously guarded skill, how to gather, refine, and bear the light of Above inside themselves. She would bestow on them the ability to bear light inside themselves and bring the radiance of Above into the darkness of their caves.

Want to give Paraiba the ability to store light inside their jewel shells.

Ravid, Goddess of Edges
HP 3/3

Beholding the curious creatures crawl across the felt from the sharp angles of a nearby geological formation, the Ravid felt...frayed. Frayed as the fibers of felt and wool that Her Incisive Gaze rested too long upon. So many people, all with so much to be gained from Her gifts, but even She had only so much to give.

So it came to pass that Her Scrutiny fell upon a Trombac creeping near the auspicious formation She had inhabited, dull and brazen. Seeing the line of its path laid out before it, the Ravid shifted the angles of her manifestion and severed that path, leaving the Trombac wobbling stationary and dumbfounded. Even as the wretched creature let out a cacophonous blat, the Lady of Edges turned Her Incisive Gaze upon it, shaving away curls of excess brass and tuning the Trombac's internal pipes until the sound became a clarion peal, pleasing to Her. The creature, heedless of the consequences of its actions, stared up at the divine manifestation, fearless and demanding.

"SHARPEN," she Intoned in response to the Trombac's inquisitive arpeggio, and a stylished hash (#) formed of four straight, intersecting lines appeared on the creature's left eye, lacerated precisely by Her Incisive Gaze. Even as the tone of the creature's voice modulated into its dominant key, its edges began to sharpen as well; bladed talons to grip, and snatch, and slice textiles, and teeth like chisels to better focus the force of its jaws on harder materials. It peered at the divine angles with a new comprehension, its thoughts sharpened as well as its body. It ducked its heavy metallic head in sudden reverence, and newborn appreciation for hierarchy. Not truly intelligent, perhaps, but greater than a mere beast.

"YOU TEETER ON THE EDGE OF GREATNESS," She Intoned, Her Voice striking the Trombac's brazen pipes to produce Her voice from the creature's own body. "AND YOU MAY YET PLUMMET TO OBLIVION. THERE ARE OTHERS, OTHERS LIKE YOU ONCE WERE.
"DULL. THOUGHTLESS. IMPRECISE. BUT WHERE THERE WAS RABBLE, THERE WILL BE CHORUS."
The Ravid swept Her Incisive Gaze across the ground, sketching out an elaborate diagram in shallow slashes of surgical precision. "BRING THEM," She Commanded. "BRING THEM THAT THEY MAY BE SHARPENED.
"BRING THEM THAT THEY MAY BE BRIGHT.
"BRING THEM...THAT YOU MAY HONE THE WORLD."

SHARPEN the Trombac!: 11.

Solomna, Goddess of Silence

Solomna surveyed the lands she had been given stewardship over and she was pleased. They were nearly untouched and so blessedly silent. But from watching other worlds take shape before, she knew that soon would come civilisation, and with civilisation would come speech and with speech noise and it would never cease. But here she had been given a chance to stop this from happening.

She reached out with her newfound power and grabbed a chunk of brass, which was the element of the dreaded sound she wished to avoid and i͏̻̖̤͈͍̭nv͢ę̲̻̦̱̟r͖̭̳̠̙̩̫t̲͈̞e̸d̢ it, until it absorbed all noise around it. The resulting material she fashioned into small, mutable dolls, which would take the rough shape of any intelligent lifeform they encountered. These dolls she instructed to search out and teach a sign language to every people of the Middle, so that they may have no need of speech in their development. On their backs, she inscribed them with a rudimentary alphabet, so that the people could draw on it once they had use of it.

Thus she spent the first quarter of her short life creating enough dolls to spread around the Middle, so that every people would eventually be found by them.

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?
Mygda, Goddess of Fruit

HP: 3/3

Mygda laughed as she soared over the inky surface of Middle's Crow sea. She'd never felt anything like this before. Oh, she had been near fallen fragments of Essence before, had even held a small speck of one for a time, but that was nothing compared to the feast of essence that was before her now. It positively shone with opportunity--or maybe that was just because Larien had already settled in. Either way, Mygda didn't intend to sit back and simply watch. No, this was an all-too-rare opportunity to do. It would mean her end, but it would be a glorious one.

She finally settled down upon the shore near the rivers that flowed down from the mountains, in the midst of a flock of blobby gumdrop-shaped Quith, who watched her idly as they basked in the light of Above, cawing amongst themselves. She drifted to the ground and set down roots, plunging deep through the layers of felt and into the earth, drinking Crow greedily. Gleaming brassy trunks sprouted from the earth, first one, then another, and then a full grove, causing considerable alarm among the Quith who increased their cries of protest. Branches spread out, and felt leaves and flowers sprouted, the latter giving way to a burgeoning crop of juicy crystalline fruit, wisps of Ghost swirling beneath their transparent skin. Mygda stepped back and admired her handiwork as the Quith went silent. She'd put a lot of herself into this, effort that she knew she would never get back. But it was worth it. This grove, bearing the Fruit of Knowledge, would stand through the ages, a monument to all that she had--hey, wait! No!

While she'd been basking in her own glory, the Quith had been busily reshaping themselves from indistinct blobs, some growing grasping legs to clamber up the tree trunks, others sprouting their wings and flying upwards, plucking the fruits from the trees and devouring them. Mygda was about to shoo them away from her precious trees (though she had a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't have worked), but then caught the eye of one of the Quith which was once again reshaping itself. While there had always been a gleam of intelligence there, it was clearly far greater now, and the bird was shaping recognizable arms and hands, clumsy at first but quickly refined. It waved at her and gave a friendly caw.

Despite herself, Mygda smiled. This world was full of surprises, always better than she had expected. She waved back.

"You're going to need to take care of these, you know."

Pseye, the Mind saw the life of Middle, and found it wanting. Rather than waste attention on them, the presence pieced together higher beings. A lattice formed of the Jewel and Ghost of the world, a perfect medium for a pure mind. At Pseye's thought the crystals took shape in Middle's ground. Time passed, the jewels grew. More time passed, all was silent, they did not think. More time passed, enough that fallible beings might have started suspecting that they had made a mistake. Not Pseye. Finally, a lone thought echoed in the depths.

"What should be thought?"

(Pseye, answering the question is free, you can do it in addition to your next godly act. Your answer will shape the new minds deeply.)

(Pseye's creations are called the Gemego. There are many of them embedded in the Middle and a few on the surface. They are still small but ones in favorable conditions are growing rapidly.)

--

Below the felt, below the brass, the Paraiba very slowly explored new caverns. Falls and outcroppings riddled the dark. Every step into the unknown was a risk. Then the Paraiba shone, and the underworld was seen for the first time. Larien, the Lightbearer's work was a success, but the light was a part of her. Sharing it left her less than she used to be. Regardless, the Paraiba soon banded banded together, led by new intelligence, new light.

(Larien's final result is 7. She loses 1HP for it being under 10.)

(The Paraiba have gained the trait of Phosphorescence! They can emit bright light but need to recharge from other light sources.)

One individual, lavish with light, raised it's eyes upwards and prayed. "Oh bringer of light. By your gift many of us have seen for the first time in their lives. Many are captivated by the light of the Above, others fear it and want to burrow deeper."

"Where should we make our home?"

(Larien, answering your followers is free, you can do it in addition to your next godly action. Your answer will shape the new Paraiba culture.)

--

The world was young, silent, still salvageable. Solomna lifted a boulder of Brass from the ground, set it against the backdrop of existence and twisted with all her godly might. The world itself wrenched and people all over the Middle felt a brief moment of unease. After the smoke cleared she had something that pleased her, and set to work. The Šarb proved tricky to shape but rough forms were fine for this purpose.

(Šarb is an inverse of Brass. It holds the opposite Ideas and is pretty unnatural all around. All that exists is in Solomna's dolls.)

The emissaries of silence set out...

--

The great fruit grove sprouted and prospered under Mygda's expert care. The word of it's wonder quickly spread down the river and flocks of Quith soon arrived to meet a goddess. Then, came a fruit. Not the first fruit of the grove but certainly the first of it's kind. A spectacular specimen, large and glistening, with a storm roiling under it's translucent, webbed surface. It shadowed all the others with it's beauty and almost broke the branch it grew from with the sheer weight of it's implications. The goddess of fruit could see it contained Grovetending itself. With it, her creation could be steered as the user pleased. The Quith crowded around it, but still keeping respectful distance, the owner of the place was right there after all. They furiously cawed back and forth, yelling what they thought should be done. Eventually the majority resolved to address the goddess herself. "Mygda, Granter of knowledge! This treasure is coveted by everybody, but who could be trusted with it? The strongest? The wisest? We don't know!"

"Who should be the grovetender, if anyone?"

(Mygda, answering your followers is free, you can do it in addition to your next godly action.)

As brass shavings fell to the ground, so did a weight fall from the trombac's mind. Despite the pain she was at peace. She had received a mission, a purpose from the god Ravid herself. "Yes! All shall be sharp! Hail the goddess of edges!" The first of the sharpened ran off, tooting rapturously. She recruited first her family, then everyone else she could find in the valley. They descended from the brass mountains, down to the plains, leaving the felt frayed and torn in their wake.

(The trombac have become Sharp. Their very bodies are cutting implements.)

Eventually the missionaries returned with material in need of sharpening. Mostly Quith. Some had come willingly, the rest struck down and gagged with wool until they couldn't resist. Not that anything could resist the sharp trombac. The birds were the majority but not the only ones. There was also a colony of Paraiba, a herd of unintelligent Muchega and assorted critters and vermin.

(The trombac have captured a number of members from the other races. Whether the inhabitants are willing or not, their valley is currently the most populated place on Middle.)

Then there was the silent one. Most curious thing. It looked like a trombac roughly hewn from blue brass, and around it all sound ceased to be. Most were initially scared of the being, but it's gentle demeanour and soothing gesturing won them over sooner or later. More and more of the hunting party and their game were becoming comfortable in it's silence. Aghast, the first of the sharpened played the highest note she could while screaming. "Goddess of the Edges! We have just been given the sharp sounds and now many are already abandoning them!"

"Is silence our future?"

(Ravid, answering your followers is free, you can do it in addition to your next godly action. Your answer will determine whether the trombac give up sound.)

Pseye, Mind

Pseye observed the Gemego, watching them think, and marveling at the clarity and purity of thoughts conveyed without the interference of the weakness of living things. Thoughts that existed but for themselves, thoughts that existed in pure isolation and orderly perfection. And with these thoughts that Pseye found ideal, the Gemego reached out to their creator.

Jvie posted:

"What should be thought?"

"Think", thought Pseye, "The thoughts only true minds can think. The thoughts above and beyond the lesser creatures. Observe reality, pontificate upon it, and realize you are the only ones in it capable of pure thought. All else is sullied, tools at best, and not worth your consideration."

"Think upon your thoughts themselves, expound upon them, and realize the exultant power of the Mind itself that I have granted you. Realize your inherent superiority in this regard."

The thoughts of Pseye wandered upon an errant Paraiba, shining fluorescent, that wandered near a Gemego. The thoughts of the Mind were dismissive, and radiating a cold sort of contempt. "Think upon the World you inhabit", Pseye instructed the Gemego, "And realize that the power of your thought alone is pure and strong enough to leave an imprint upon it. These tools that move, impress your Thoughts upon them and thus prove Mind's mastery over the Material."

"Yes."

"Think of yourselves as..."

"Masters."

Pseye is telling the Gemego to think in alien, abstract ways that living things find difficult to follow or empathize with. Pseye tells them likewise to be uncaring at best, coldly contemptuous at worst of life, and consider it naught but a tool to their own ends. As for the action:
Teaching Gemego the Magic of Thought so they can mindblast and control the lesser beings: 15
The Gemego are to use this magic to dominate the lesser creatures around them to perform the physical tasks they cannot do, such as building or moving their new masters about.

A word for those not in Discord: My plan as a Divinity during the first age is to set the Gemego as these sort of otherworldly and lovecraftian alien overlords that ruled the World in prehistory (since that is where we currently are). I also mean for them to be deposed by uprising or forced into dormancy fairly quickly and then forgotten, just so that some archeologist can uncover Strange Artifacts like five ages from now and unleash Rock-Cthulhu. Mainly telling this so that it's clear I'm not dicking with the people for the hell of it, but trying to establish a set-piece that I find conceptually cool.

Solomna

Yes, the Šarb was perfect, now to embed it in the structure of the world! Solomna raced around the world to find a people worthy of her gift.
After inspecting the various creatures roaming the surface, she settled on the Munchega as the carriers of her legacy. Their slow, pondering nature would mesh well with the aspects of Šarb. She lifted one of them from their felt meadow and carefully began modifying it, adding some hormones, a small new organ and changing the structure of their wool slightly. She embedded these changes as dominant in their genetic code and began modifying others, so that they would quickly spread across the entire species. With only these few changes, the Munchega would begin adding brass to their diet, which their new organ would turn into Šarb, and embed in their wool, creating a source of Šarb in the Middle.
Solomna also knew that her act of divine interference would raise the Munchega to awareness, and the Šarb embedded in them would hopefully shape their race in the future, pushing them to be more egalitarian and peaceful than they might have been otherwise.

Embed Šarb in the Munchega's wool: 1d20=3
Some help over here?

Ravid, Goddess of Edges
HP 3/3

The Question

Jvie posted:

"Is silence our future?"
In response to the impassioned plea of the G-Major Trombac, the Leading Edge, First of Her Sharpened, Ravid turns Her Incisive Gaze upon the face of the mountainside. Dragging Her Regard like a divine awl, She etches a long, broken line across the brass, filling the valley with a series of mighty, knee-weakening, heart-melting tones, interspersed with, just as crucially, a series of poignant, restful, inspirational silences. As the assembled creatures recover from this latest divine manifestation, Ravid Turns Her Notice back to the Questioner.

"WHICH WAS MORE IMPORTANT," Ravid intones in Her Usual Manner, vibrating the Trombac's own pipes with the Edge of Her Voice, to speak to the entire assembly through this vessel. "THE TONES, OR THE SILENCE BETWEEN THEM? CAN ONE EXIST WITHOUT THE OTHER? EDGES CREATE DIVISIONS; THAT IS THEIR FUNDAMENTAL NATURE. IT IS FOR YOU TO OBSERVE THESE DIFFERENCES, AND MAKE THEM USEFUL."

The Converts

Looking upon the varied creatures brought before Her in various degrees of willingness, Ravid Considered. All were different, and would take to Sharpening in different ways; it would be dull of Her to attempt to hone them all in the same manner.

Beholding a placid Munchega, wool matted and tangled from wild living and rough treatment, Ravid whispered with the very Edge of the Edge of Her Voice, and sheared a tiny amount of tangled wool from the creature, letting the soft wad drop silently to the felt. She Sharpened the edge of a broken snalloy shell, and bade a Tromboc bring the implement to the Munchega. She then shaved a smooth mirror finish into the face of the mountain, that the woolite might see itself in its wretched disarray.

"LANGUISH NOT," she intoned with relative gentleness by resonating the Sharpened shell, "IN DULL HOMOGENITY. PURSUE REFINEMENT OF YOUR AESTHETIC, THAT YOUR KIND MAY DEEM YOUR IMAGE SHARP." She sheared another small clump, then bade the Munchega try to groom itself in the brass mirror.

The others She Regarded in a similar manner.

To the Paraiba, she displayed the finer lapidary arts, chiseling, etching, and polishing their bodies with glorious scintillating facets and daring cleavages, and granting sharpened implements that others might pursue these arts themselves.

As to the Quith, She deemed introducing too many lines to their amorphous forms would be inimical, so She merely honed the desire for brightness in their minds. A gentle, whispering nudge to sharpen their love of the shining, the sparkling, the Sharp. Perhaps, in their adaptability and curiosity, they could be turned to assist the other species in their pursuit of a sharper image. Ravid entertained thoughts of Quith stylists and gemcutters, and found them Good.

Introducing Aesthetics to the Races of Middle: 1d20 6

All the direct intervention was more than She was accustomed to, and She felt the strain on her Edges. A Sharper world would be worth dulling Herself, however, and the new Sharpened could take up some of the metaphysical weight going forward.

OOC: I am specifically introducing these arts to the people gathered in the valley, not altering the races as a whole; it will be up to them how far it spreads.

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?
Mygda, Goddess of Fruit

HP: 3/3

Jvie posted:

"Who should be the grovetender, if anyone?"

Mygda pondered this question for a time. "I think," she said after a while "That it should go to the most patient among you. To be the Grovetender is a great responsibility, but also a slow one. Trees grow in their own time, after all, and cannot be rushed. The Grovetender must be able to wait for the right time, and they must be willing to be patient with their students as they pass their knowledge on."

Standing up, Mygda walked over to the tree that had produced the Grovetending fruit, idly etching her mark in its bark. She paused in thought once more, and turned back to the flocks of Quith.

"There is a very important lesson that I want to share with all of you. It's about the world, and about Gods. If you remember nothing else that I teach you, I want you to remember this. Imagine, if you will, that this tree, its roots, it's trunk, it's branches--is Middle. It's strong, and durable, and everything else is supported on it. You, my friends, my family, are the leaves. You come and you go, and you are what bring life to the rest of the tree--to Middle. And while an individual leaf will not last forever or support the tree on its own, there will always be leaves."

Smiling, Mygda held out a hand as the tree dropped a fruit into it. "The gods are the fruit. We shine beautifully, we bring new things into the world... and we are temporary. I lived for an eternity in Below, and I could have lived for many eternities more. The moment I set foot on Middle, though, I began to die. I do not regret this decision--I could never regret it. Every single moment on Middle is worth all of the eternities there have ever been Below. With the time that I am lucky enough to have, I promise I will do all that I can for you, but there will be a time, sooner than you might think, when I will be gone, and how you use my gifts will be up to you. I know you will be up to the task."

"Later still, there will be more Gods to come. Give them the respect--or fear--they are due, accept their gifts, resist the curses some among them might try to lay upon you, and know that they, too, are temporary. The tree and the leaves will outlast them."

She set the fruit aside, and then cupped her hands together, piles of gleaming brassy-shelled nuts appearing within and spilling over.

"Anyways, enough of that grim talk! There may only be one Grove of Knowledge to be tended, but there's plenty more the rest of you can take care of, if you feel up to it. These nuts aren't for eating. I mean, you could, and they'd be delicious, but that's not the point right now. The point is, I want each of you to take one of these nuts, and plant them somewhere away from here. They'll grow quickly, so be careful about that! These will be the Waytrees--their branches will be strong and twisty, with plenty of good spots to rest, and their nuts will be tasty and filling. Spread out as you plant these, and no Quith will ever be too far from a home"

The real power behind countless overlords

Larien Lightbearer, Goddess of Hope, Mother of the Paraiba

Larien rejoiced with her daughters as they discovered sight and light for the first time. She was with each of them as they found wonder in the diversity of life above and below. She was with them as they nurtured their young. And she sorrowed with them as their light faded over time in the darkness under the surface of Middle. She had hoped that they would be able to amplify the light of Above and so bring life everlasting to the Middle, but all was not yet lost. Though it had cost her greatly, a part of her would be with her children always. That part would bear the light of Above to all dark places; bringing hope and sight where there had been none before.

Jvie posted:

One individual, lavish with light, raised it's eyes upwards and prayed. "Oh bringer of light. By your gift many of us have seen for the first time in their lives. Many are captivated by the light of the Above, others fear it and want to burrow deeper."

"Where should we make our home?"

"You are my daughters and I love you dearly. So I say to you, that the highest calling of our family is to not just seek the light, but to bear it. You should strive always towards the light of Above, that it may fill you; and so that you may share it with the rest of the Middle. The path to the Light of Above will be long and difficult. I shall prepare the way for you, but you shall have to tend it and may need to extend it. I have faith in you, my daughters, and in your ability to grow. Seek the path at the highest point in all the land."

***

Larien soared to the highest point of the Middle, far up in the Brass mountains. There she focused her light into a sword and sliced off the peaks off all the other mountains. For her next act, she would need a truly enormous amount of Brass, and those were the most accessible areas. Gathering up the peaks of all the other mountains she fabricated a massive chain of brass.

One end, she fused into the peak of the highest mountain. The other end she seized hold of and soared towards her birthplace, the Above. She strained with all the power that was left in her to reach that far distant place and forever anchor the Middle to it's life giving light. She did not truly expect to make it, but she had not been idly named the goddess of hope. Even if she failed, the chain might yet bring her daughters closer to the light.

Brass Chains to Above: 1d20 10

So I don't know if anchoring Middle to Above is inside the narrative scope, but by golly I'm going to try. And hey, a giant chain disappearing into the heavens or crashing down all over the surface of the middle is still pretty cool.
