That's been happening to Karlsson quite a bit lately.

I remember Cowen had a similar track of getting big trade returns that Ottawa always turned down for some dubious potential that didn't equate with anything observable about him. Cowen was better than Ceci.

That's frightening.

I don't understand what makes Ceci be in such apparent demand. I've seen a few different pieces about Ceci being in trade dealings.

6'2", 205 lbs
Can't be size, that's vaguely average by NHL standards.

-16 career +/-
I think this is a garbage stat, but media-types always use it so whatever. -16 doesn't seem stellar to me, so can't be that.

44.4 CF% (-7.5 relative) this year (career isn't so much better).
Can't be fancy possession either...

81 pts in 322 games
Underwhelming. Can't be this.

1.5 hits per game -- 2.1 blocks per game (two most recent seasons)

Eric Gudbranson was almost traded for actual NHL defenceman Jason Demers and returned a recent first, 2nd and 4th when he was traded to Vancouver. A great retirement investment is to have a son, make sure he shoots right then tell anyone who will listen that he's a leader and defensively responsible. It doesn't matter if it's objectively not true, just say it enough and eventually it'll stick. By the time that guy's 28 you'll be living in a Mansion in Bermuda.

Imagine being a fan of a team with a GM who traded Tyler Seguin and Taylor Hall for a pile of poo poo.

That'd be like if I dunno Mike Gillis had traded both Sedins and Ryan Kesler for poo poo and somehow managed to get a GM job after that because of one Cup win where his team was carried by an all-time goalie performance.

e: Actually it looks like the Thornton deal wasn't done under Chiarelli's watch so he at least gets a pass for that one

Did the NHL finally change their weather cancelation policy, it used to be they would play the game no matter what if both teams were in the city. I think maybe it was because they wanted the Bruins to play the same day as a citywide travel ban for snow?

the THRILL
The best part of the story is that the trade didn’t happen because Pierre “I Make All Hockey Decisions” Dorion had to get approval from Melnyk for a no-brainer trade.

I’m almost ready to give up on being a fan of the team until Melnyk sells it. Even Karlsson, the only reason to keep watching this dumb team, is looking terrible now after a hot start.

e: The second best part is what’s implied by the phrasing “Ottawa finally got to a place where it would consider Cody Ceci”. I’m pretty sure any poster on this board could make better hockey decisions than the guys currently running the team.

There's a trend in the NHL of signing role players to long-term, lower salary contracts as RFAs, rather than waiting for UFA age which we all know tends to lead to contracts with a disastrous back-end in decline. That contract ends at age 30, so there's not much risk of decline. Isles have had him playing pro between the AHL and NHL for four years, so presumably they've had time to evaluate him despite only having 65 NHL games. Low cap risk, though, so I guess they're banking on him being a serviceable NHL player on a cheap deal.

The cap risk of the Mayfield contract is low. If he is sent down to the AHL next year, they take a 425k cap hit, by the final year of the contract that goes down to 325k. That's a total cap liability of 1.875m for this contract. Considering veteran 3rd pairing UFAs often get 2-3m over 2-3 years, it's probably a safer option, and smarter if their talent evaluation is any good.

Year-by-year cap hit in the AHL.

2017-18: $425,000
2018-19: $400,000
2019-20: $375,000
2020-21: $350,000
2021-22: $325,000

Yeah that's a weird deal for what I assume is like a 6-7 D? Why bother? I guess maybe they assume an FA replacement would be like $2m or something and really want the extra cap savings the next couple years for Tavares etc.
