Pierce was good through Season 2 and mostly good in 3, but I get why Chase left after season 4.

Did you not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese?
The problem with the original cast is that Greendale was pretty much established from the beginning as a wild and wacky place, and the main characters disconnect from all that, despite their own foibles, added to the emotional value of their growth and change. For example any dickishness that Pierce had in the S1 finale didn't even rate compared to the absurdity of Chang and Duncan's rivalry, the Dean expressing his dalmatian fetish, or Slater's pettiness regarding Jeff and Britta. The latter seasons didn't really exhibit that and while I don't think it turned the show bad, it did lose something in the process.

True, but also I think a version of the show that was less mature than Season 6's take might have squandered them in the same ways. Like I don't imagine Frankie Dart as written in the context of the first couple of seasons of Community would have been as funny or compelling as the one who could only come in after five seasons of context and experience.

The place my mind always goes for biggest laugh is the Winger speech montage in Paradigms of Human Memory. "El corazon del agua es verdad / That water - is a lie!" and "It's a locomotive - that runs on US." combined with the swelling music just get me every time. They're just these hilariously elaborate three second shots that perfectly sum up Jeff's total sophistry.

A giant pot leaf in a rainbow wig waving sparklers and yelling "POOOOOKEMOOOON!!!" is hilarious on its own but the context brings it to a whole other level. Well-meaning Pierce is Best Pierce.

It has the same ups and downs as most good sitcoms. I think people expect a level of continuous quality you're never going to get from a sitcom. Even the best ones have their off-days. Season 4 is... unfortunate, but otherwise it's never terrible.

Pierce's writing and characterisation declined when Harmon stopped identifying with him and started identifying as Abed.

There's a looooooooot more Pierce apologises for being a jerk but people still love that he is a jerk in the first season, than there is Abed is unable to emotionally connect, except through pop-culture, and alienates people but is accepted by his friends anyway.

I don't think Community lost the heart it had when it comes to the core cast's interactions, but there is definitely some whiplash when we frequently see from outsiders' perspectives that the group as a whole does nothing but cause harm (or frustration) to everyone outside their little circle.

Also Pierce had more heart and characterization as a will being read out by Walton Goggins in season 5 than as an actual character in season 4.

It still has a lot of good parts; I laughed a lot. It just wasn't as consistently good. I think part of it was Dan and Jeff sticking with their characters' feud for the entire season. It was fine the first time but them being stubborn assholes to each other about it after they made up again and again got really old.

Yeah that was a weird choice since they seemed to make up almost every episode only to be angry again the next. I think Dan kept going back to that because he didn’t have any better ideas to generate conflict. I hope there’s a 3rd season though, I think the story is great and the guests really make each episode.

I agree with you guys. I did laugh but there were indeed a lot of weird character beats. I felt like some of the guests weren't strong improvisers either. Dan and Erin definitely had some distance between them which is understandable. I also felt the overall plot didn't progress very well. It was almost like they tried to make it too complicated? I don't know hard to explain.

Anyway, I still watched it, and will probably rewatch it, and will definitely watch a season 3.

Rewatched a bit of Season 1 last night. Picked up a couple of Abed lines I didn't remember ever noticing before.

"I have a bunk bed, which is a misnomer because it's the real deal."

"Before we start, I'd like to have a preliminary pow wow, or prelimiwow, about what I'm calling our library's backdoor conundrum."
"Sounds like a porno with Kate Winslet."

Coincidentally, I was rewatching this when I read the Megan Ganz/Dan Harmon Twitter exchange about him being a lovely rear end in a top hat to work with and his apologies for it. People are lumping it into #MeToo but I don't recall hearing about sexual harassment, just Unbelievable Drunken rear end in a top hat Derision and such. Perhaps there was even more to it than that.

Based on the above tweet thread of her's, it seems that Harmon had a thing for her and sent her inappropriate/harassing messages on her phone and kept trying to work one-on-one with her at his house despite her objections, going as far to say "Relax, Ganz. I'm not gonna rape you."
