The Sharp flourished. Tool workshops, cheap workforce, dominance of trade, clear goals. Truly, they alone stood as Middle's one true civilization. Hippies living in trees didn't count. And besides, their waytrees were just as open to the Sharp quith as the other ones. They had what the others did not, and they knew it. And they hadn't even taken the first true step. Not until now. Ravid's final lesson brought her cult to rapturous frenzy. Edgerdemain was the culmination of sharpness. They were one and the same.

(The sharp have all become beginners in Edgerdemain. It is a way of life for them.)

(Edgerdemain is a school of philosophy aligned with Sharpness. It's adherents can cut the minds of others, removing traits from them.)

In the end the valley was silent.

----------------

Baandage agreed. What was taking place in the valley was horrific beyond words. One way or another she would see the "blunt" freed.

(Baandage has accepted Solomna's request.)

Solomna's previous bioengineering project had been an abject failure but mistakes happen, right? This time she knew more and would do better. Indeed, it was safe to move on to much bigger things. The snalloy, once embedded with her Silence would have the potential to overwhelm and snuff out any offending divinities. Then they turned on her. To her horror she realized these were no escargone at all.

----------------

Once, Solomna had broken the natural order of things to create the šarb, sending waves of instability across the middle. Even that act of subversion was nothing compared to the vortex of broken space now looming over the land. Driven by a mad determination, Pseye wouldn't end. It would go from immaterial to material even if that meant tearing the middle in two! Mortal to true god! Finite to Infinite! The worthless life fled in terror from the land in Pseye's path as the mind begun it's descent towards the core of the world. Thought by thought it fought it's way forwards, until, it broke. Pseye's divine awareness cracked like a mirror, and the storm of end times came to a halt. Was it possible for a god to stay on the middle? Pseye wouldn't know, it had failed.
The mind's remnants slowly rained over the disgusting, mewling creatures celebrating their continued existence. The snails were but a formality when they came for the burning shreds.

Neither of them would know peace.

The Horrusk are 3/8 ready.

----------------

The Middle had a cycle of day and night, in it's own manner. At more or less regular intervals the gaseous Crow in the atmosphere would condense into tiny droplets of ink. Too small to fall but substantial enough to partially Obscure the Above's light before breaking apart again. The people had no idea of any of this and it didn't stop them from enjoying the play of light and shadow now taking place in the dimness of the night. Mygda's great tree was encircled with a spiral of light as the Paraiba climbed it's stairs. The canopy saw the most diverse gathering of people in Middle's short history. Not many sharp had answered the summons but all groups were represented. The mood was rising and rising, but suddenly people dropped their drinks in shock. Everyone stared at the entrance. Most of them only knew the Nilthos from horror stories but now one was here in plain view. But their host wouldn't have an awkward pause in celebrations. All were welcome to witness the end of an era. Very quickly warmth returned to the people's hearts.

Many tears were shed that night. Of joy and otherwise.

The people had never known a time without the gods watching over them. Would they manage on their own?

What would await them in the uncertain era ahead of them?

They would know later. People would keep on living in the coming times. Were they ones of peace, or sorrow.

DIVINE REMNANTS posted:

Surviving gods: Mygda, Ravid.

If your god survived to the end of the era, they will leave behind a remnant of their influence. It's power is determined by your remaining HP.
  • 3HP - Artifact. Great, lasting remnant of your power, it can be used once per Era.
  • 2HP - Miracle. Powerful but fragile. It can be used only once before being gone.
  • 1HP - Idol. Weak remains continually affecting the world. They give a minor passive effect to their surroundings.

If your god has survived, indicate three concepts that describe the remnant's effect (Eg. Tool, Flying, Weapon), or give a suggestion for a effect what you want.

NEW GODS posted:

Even thought the first Era of gods is over, don't roll up new ones just yet. We are going to do a mini-CYOA from the perspective of Middle's people first. When you DO roll your god, keep this in mind:
  • If you were a god in this Era, you cannot be one in the new one. In the Era following that you still have -10 to your roll.
  • When you roll the 1d00, add your current spirit points to the roll! The people who become gods lose their points, having spent them.
  • The spirit points are cumulative over the Eras. If you don't get in now you can keep collecting more for better chances next time!

I love these! Thank you all for your interest once again. There'll be some time before the CYOA begins, but not too long.

See all of you soon!

Cutting-Words, The Miracle of Edges, possesses the qualities of Cutting, Truth, and Sound. It is a divine phrase, the first etched on the bronze walls of the valley, carefully curated by the Sharpest and never voiced, for once voiced, its essential Sharpness will slice through the fabric of the Middle, and it will vanish forever.

When projected, Cutting-Words will slice through the obfuscation and falsehood of its target, mortal, divine, or otherwise, laying bare underlying truths and revealing hidden weakness. No secret, no vulnerability can hide from the primal rebuke. But Cutting-Words is double-edged; the speaker will suffer the same stark revelation, and if they survive, will never be the same.

So because I'm really into this game and am a huge nerd, I collected some useless statistics that probably aren't relevant to anything.
pre:
Base Rolls
Pseye: 11, 15, 13, 2 [Average: 10.25]
Ravid: 11, 6, 5, 19 [Average: 10.25]
Larien: 3, 10, 5, 18 [Average: 9]
Mygda: 7, 13, 2, 16 [Average: 9.5]
Solomna: 14, 3, 17, 1 [Average: 8.75]

Base Successes/Failures: 11 successes, 9 failures

Spirit Shenanigans
Pseye: +2, +2/-5, +1/-6, +2/-2
Ravid: 0, +4, 0, +2
Larien: +5/-1, +2/-1, 0, +4
Mygda: +8, -1, +4, +4
Solomna: +1, -2, +2, -2

17 votes in the first round, 16 +1's, and 1 -1.
21 votes in the second round, 8 +1's, 9 -1's, and 4 abstains
20 votes in the third round, 7 +1's, 6 -1's, and 7 abstains
20 votes in the fourth round, 12 +1's, 4 -1's, and 4 abstains
43 +1's, 20 -1's, and 15 abstains in total.
Number of Spirit votes in the First Age: 78

Final Totals
Pseye: 13, 12, 8, 2 [Average: 8.75]
Ravid: 11, 10, 5, 21 [Average: 11.75]
Larien: 7, 11, 5, 22 [Average: 11.75]
Mygda: 15, 12, 6, 20 [Average: 13.25]
Solomna: 15, 1, 19, -1 [Average: 8.5]

Adjusted Successes/Failures: 12 successes, 8 failures. 2 failures became successes, and one success became a failure due to Spirits.

Pseye got 20 votes, 7 +1's and 13 -1's
Ravid got 6 votes, all of which were +1's
Larien got 13 votes, 11 +1's and 2 -1's
Mygda got 17 votes, 16 +1's and one -1
Solomna got 7 votes, 3 +1's and 4 -1's
So, Spirits helped more than they harmed, although this might be because we only had a single -1 vote. Also, only three rolls total actually flipped from success to failure or vice-versa due to Spirit Shenanigans, so it's not like the Spirits are secretly running the show. The Gods failed or succeeded on their own merit for the most part.

Speaking of the Gods:

Pseye had the most consistent rolls, right up until they rolled a 2 for their final action. Also got by far the most -1 votes, although that only mattered once.

Ravid wasn't as consistently as good as Pseye at rolling, but still managed to tie for best base average results. Spirit-wise, however, Ravid was basically a ghost, with the fewest votes total and the only God to not receive any votes in two rounds. But at least all of her votes were positive, and actually flipped one of her failures to a success.

Larien was pretty middle-of-the-road, with the exception of having the second-most positive votes from the Spirits. And yet, those votes didn't actually change any of her results.

Mygda was clearly the thread's favorite, getting both the most positive votes each round (with the exception of round 2) and the most positive votes total. She also joins Ravid in being the only Gods to have one of their failures become a success due to Spirits.

Solomna had the worst average result, and is the only God so far to die from damage. Also the only one to get their result pushed into the negatives thanks to Spirits.

Overall, the First Age was pretty alright, minus the disastrous end that saw 3 out of 5 Gods die, although one of those deaths was due to climbing up the chain (and might not have been an actual death, since Jvie was vague about it). Even with most of the gods dying unnaturally, however, the peoples of the Middle are still doing ok, with the Trombacs and the Quith doing well for different reasons, the Munchegas slowly recovering (but also potentially heading into conflict with the Trombacs), the Nilthos only barely coming to relevance, and the Paraiba suffering nightmares and visions from the Gemego. So that leaves one final question: just how badly are the second generation of Gods going to mess everything up?

Hmmm, thanks for the data actually, because based on this, I'd like to make the following requests:

@Jvie: How do you feel about the following?

1) Give us an extra -1 instead of the 0? Because I really wanted to down-vote Mr. Mind Flaying Rock to oblivion. Maybe even give us four open ended votes, so we can vote +1/0/-1 each phase of an Era?

2) Give the Spirits more ability to sway each God's roll? Unless you specifically designed the system so that each God Player's roll really should be the deciding factor, unless in edge cases.

That's the system that Fragile Gods used in the beginning, but it led to basically every roll being adjusted to either a 0 or a 20 once enough people showed up and started Wisping. This one hasn't hit that critical mass (yet), but the system as-is has been tested and is pretty future-proof for if/when word gets around and readership increases.

And spirits here do still have a solid effect on outcomes, even if they're not tipping things over the 0, 10, or 20 critical points often the exact number still changes the outcome (e.g. a 15 is gonna have measurably better results than an 11).

That's a nice writeup. However, your classification of a failure really isn't accurate. The middle breakpoint only matters for HP. Higher roll will always have better outcome than low so each +1 does matter.

1) For the next era I intend to give you +1, +1, -1, -1, 0. You could then affect a roll every turn, but also abstain once if you wish.

2) As said above the spirits definitely changed outcomes in this era. I'm keeping it at +1/-1 per turn for now.

The first pantheon has faded away, and with them the first Era. The people of Middle are for the first time thrown into a world where no one is watching over them. Civilization is young and the world unmapped. Most people are still mainly concerned with day to day survival rather than great works. The previously divided peoples have forged connections with each other in the great celebration of the Era's end, but tensions are still high. The Cult of the Sharp is effectively formalising slavery and making a grab for the resources around them, bringing them closer and closer to the munchega and quoth settlements. What will become of the faithful of light atop the Chain Mountain? The divided Nilthos?

The stage is set for Heroes to make a difference in the world.

-~X~-

To begin an adventure, we need a Hero! Some of the races have already acquired a hero, but a new one can also rise to the call. We shall vote for who to pick.

  • A1 - * Crystar the survivor of Above, she is Radiant, Ambitious and Touched by Infinity.
  • A2 - Doormaline, she is Eye-touched, and skilled in Spectreality.
  • A3 - Undefined, give them a name and three traits.

  • B1 - * Unicoloro, he is Cultivator of Knowledge, Patient and skilled in Crowth.
  • B2 - Sharpie, he is Rude, Fast and beginner in Edgerdemain.
  • B3 - Undefined, give them a name and three traits.

  • C1 - * Baandage, she is Kind, Teacher and skilled in First Braid.
  • C2 - Khermit , he is Antisocial, Bluewool and skilled in First Braid.
  • C3 - Undefined, give them a name and three traits.

  • D1 - Gi'Major the First of the Sharpened. She is Sharp, Charismatic and skilled in Edgerdemain.
  • D2 - Clamp, he is Not So Sharp, Musical and "At least you tried" in Edgerdemain.
  • D3 - Undefined, give them a name and three traits.

  • E1 - Boorbara, she is Arm of Justice, Fast and Sneaky.
  • E2 - The Turgid, they are Enormous, Hungry and Whimsical.
  • E3 - Undefined, give them a name and three traits.

Note that the characters not marked with a * are hypothetical. If not chosen they probably don't exist, at least as heroes.

We also need a quest! Whoever we choose they need to focus on something. The options are pretty vague to leave me leeway.

  • F Personal Quest
Something specific to the Hero in question, revealing something about them or granting them special skills.
  • G Mystery
A mysterious occurrence puzzles the People, and they send out a Hero to solve it!
  • H Monster Hunt
A beast threatens the People - and without Gods, the People need a hero!
  • I Slice of Life
Just a story among the People in question - casual and thoughtful, most likely!
  • J Write In
One short sentence idea - the vaguer the better!

Anyone can vote during the adventure. You aren't in character. No outside force is making the decisions, the Hero is.

I fully support the FGoS system where we had two pluses, two minuses and one abstain for the four rounds of an age (especially now that my RADICAL REFORMS are out of the way :v: ) , since that gives a bit of wiggle room without people just spamming ++++ endlessly.

As per having the spirits be more influential, I'm not really down with that. They can already have very significant impact, so if you boost them radically then people will have even less leeway in playing their gods the way they want to and will practically be leashed to the thread consensus if they want to get anything done. Spirits should remain spectators with a way to sway things a bit that way or another, not the main arbiter of how things should proceed.

Truly, Middle is facing interesting times. With danger behind every corner what'll become of the burgeoning communities? Heroes hold the fate of the world in their hands, but what makes a Hero, or hero? Is it the powers granted by fate? The unextinguishable will to do what is right? Where goes the line between a Hero and a tyrant? Is there suc

"Buckle in, lame-os!"

-~X~-

My name is Clamp, and lately I've been feeling left out. The craftsmen don't want me around after the incident, and the hunters say I make too much noise. My sister's kids used to think I'm cool but nowadays they call me uncle Farts and laugh at me. Lately the Sharpest have had me carrying stuff for the traders... I don't like it. My back is killing me after every job. Its not the brightest time in my life for sure. Still, its not all bad. I've still got my bud Sharpie.

"What are you moping about dude. Chin up! You gotta look sharp. Did I tell you where I was the day back? Bunch of trees or whatever. There was some droopy needlebeak with green eyes bossing people around. I told him "Who does your plumage? Tell them they suck!" Haha. You should have seen it. Got any grub?"

"Nope. Maybe sis will share something..."

"You can't just keep begging! Be sharp, dude! If life gives you rocks then you, uh eat them or something I guess. You should fly to somewhere with less rocks. Its like, if you dive into the river for blotlings to eat but grab a dead and rotting one and then spend the whole week throwing up. Get what I'm saying?"

"...Maybe."

Sharpie is right. I've got to sharpen up. I'll go to the hunters right away and show I'm not to be ignored!

-~X~-

"Get lost Clamp. I haven't the time."

"I won't! Let me come on the next hunt! I'm the new and improved Clamp now!"

"Well I won't. Seriously, leave me alone. We have our hands full already. The Monster has struck again. We lost a whole bag of bluewool and the lives of our best spinners before anyone noticed."

"The Monster! You're going to kill it, right? Let me come! I'll prove myself!"

"As if. The Sharpest have already gone after it so you'd be even less necessary than usually. Although... They've been gone for a while now. If you want to make yourself look less useless you could go look what's keeping them up."

"Yes!"

-~X~-

Sharpie was happy to come along with me. We followed a stream up the mountain range until we could go no further. Before us was a great cliff.

"We going that way?"

"I think so. The monster lives up in the mountains. I don't think I can climb this... Hey I know! You could fly up there."

"And you can't. I'm not chasing a monster by myself!"

"...Then we're backtracking."

"After coming all the way here? No way! I'll give you a lift."

...yeah, this isn't happening. Now that I think about it, I don't know for sure if the monster even is in this direction. We should have asked someone before setting off. What to do...

  • A Play a soulful tune to attract the beast.

  • B Lets go ask someone where the monster actually is.

  • C There are caves nearby. Pick one and hope it connects to somewhere higher up.

  • D YOU CAN DO IT SHARPIE! DO THE IMPOSSIBLE! PIERCE THE ABOVE!

...and what are we even going to do once we find the monster? What's our plan?
  • E We set a trap!
