Shield + Welcome Mat is hilarious because there's literally no way to see the trap without vaulting over the shield and getting caught.

EDIT: Speaking of shields, I found out today that you can use one of those shields to prevent people from entering through a window.
That's really silly on some maps.

a lot of the time you can pixel snipe frost traps through gaps that are otherwise seemingly well hidden behind cover

but prefire spamming has been the most popular and effective way to deal without losing momentum or using explosives.

i've seen 3 speed attackers breach into a room at the last second, destroying the frost trap and killing the last anchor all with an acog and no reload. even better is when someone vaults into danger but pulls off a bullshit headshot before they land in the trap or fall to death like they're in a Jason Bourne freefall

I have seen things

my kinda ape posted:

I mean his ability is useless in the double secret super pro-league that you play in where everyone gets headshots 100% of the time but down in the weeds of gold/plat we're giving and receiving plenty of shots to the body. (I have ~7000 kills and of those ~2000 are headshots.) Rook gives a 20% reduction in damage taken, the same as having level 3 armor except with no speed penalty. That's pretty drat good unless you're of the opinion that 2 and 3 armor characters are all super lovely because they have a large speed penalty in exchange for a completely useless 10 or 20% reduction in damage. Remaining standing with low health is vastly preferable to being dead. The fact that it guarantees you'll be DBNO is also extremely good since defenders are often behind hard cover which prevents the person shooting you from finishing you off. Also hardly anyone knows this but Rook's armor also doubles your bleed out time which makes it much easier to crawl to safety so a friendly can revive you.

His ability is absolutely one of the best in the game. Yeah it's not very exciting to use but most of the time you're not changing up gadget placement in the middle of the game anyway. He's a fantastic pick for new players who want to use an ability that greatly helps the team that they can't possibly gently caress up while they focus on the most important part of the game, shooting people.

Like, your argument is basically "Rook is bad because everyone I play with/against is better than the best players in the world."

Then why does he have a consistently high pick rate in the pro-league? Who are you playing with that's so inhumanly good?

I'm average at best in our group but we consistently face very good players from high gold to diamond and this fabled headshots only meta is mysteriously absent from our games.

TTK in this game is so fast that %20 dmg reduction does gently caress all difference in survivability in my 1000+ hours of experience with this game. Any of the other ops I listed have gadgets that help the team in better ways than rook's does(again in my experience). I mean if you think Rook is the poo poo feel free to play him. I don't care. :v:

Perpendicular to it, I think, so that one edge points towards the window and another away. That seems to break the vaulting function.

I started playing yesterday on PC and I’ve been teamkilled 4 times already. 2 were accidental but 1 was because I put a castle barricade on a door that someone else didn’t like and instead of saying “hey don’t do that doorway” they just killed me instead. The other one was because one of my teammates was using his drone and I didn’t realize so I shot it when it rolled into my room. That was my fault.

Other than that though it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve had a couple rounds where I’ve gotten 4 kills. I even managed to escort he hostage out one time which seems rare.

Note that Castle has one of the most swingy gadgets. It's very possible to put up his barricades in places where they will outright help the attackers more than the defenders. And even if they're placed correctly, they're often only middling useful. Of course that's not to say that teamkilling for the choice of OP is ever appropriate (particularly because all defenders can just tear down Castle barricades as needed), but it's probably best to be extra careful with his gadget until you've got some experience on the usual flow on the various maps.

I've found Castle to be useful late round when you need to close off doorways and most folks have used up their explosives already. A timer will be ticking down and they'll be standing there desperately trying to melee the thing down.

What's the consensus on his weapon choice? I like the AK alright, but the light machinegun is really cool...

I go between the depending on how I'm feeling. The AK has one of the highest DPS rates in the game next to the FAMAS, and it's usually my first choice. If I'm feeling less serious, I'll rock the machine gun. It's not as much damage, but has a decent controllable fire rate and still packs plenty of punch.

On the other hand, if a team starts hanging out in my usual Fuze spots, I'll bring a shield to catch flankers off guard. Setting off a charge and waiting for someone to come running can work if you know they will try coming upstairs to get you.

I started out playing exclusively rook on defense and I think many people would feel the stress of using gadgets + learning maps + learning everything else about siege to be overwhelming. You've got more than enough to keep your busy just learning the maps on defense and figuring out which side opfor is coming from.

Imagine a world where you put your ADS on the windows and your sore teammates TKs you, or a world where you run around placing kapkan traps and get headshot because you were so focused on figuring out where the drat things should go while the attack phase already began, without even having used your wall reinforcements. Infinitely more infuriating.

EDIT: I am seriously confused at all the people who scoff at easing a newbie into the game using a straightforward set that always helps your team, taking off the stress of "am I disappointing my team?" which is probably a factor in getting yelled at and, unsurprisingly, quitting the game due to toxicity.

Yeah considering all of the times people are chill in the thread regarding picks, all the trash talk about Rook is confusing, especially turning away newbies. Everyone until level 20 40 are like newborns, let them have the rounds where they turtle and get the obj frags so they can reminisce about them later when they're roaming as Cav with encyclopedic map knowledge

Also the p90 can be diiirty

Jack Trades

Rook is seriously good for a new player to play.
The fact that you only need to drop the bag and nothing else is a good thing, because that leaves the player with a lot of time during prep to figure out where all the windows, doors and trapdoors are, good places to camp, etc etc.
Not having anything to do other than looking around is good, especially considering that lack of map knowledge is the biggest killer.

Also yeah, P90 is a good gun for a new player too because it's versatile and good enough to headshot hunt AND magdump with.

If I can convince other people to go LMGs, I love using Fuze's LMG because it's fun and LMG rushes are a blast.

But Fuze's AK is just so drat good that it gives other guns image problems because they can't compete. Even if you use no attachments it'll chop people into pieces just because the recoil will magically send a bullet between their eyes. Other guns feel inadequate just seeing it, the way a teenage girl feels bad because the cheerleaders are more popular on Instagram.

lol gently caress that, I used to roam like crazy when I was new and played Rook. Nobody ever looked behind them and claymores didn't exist so I'd just hide in some remote corner, wait for opfor to come inside, and then walk up behind them and hose them down

P90 is trash though, don't recommend that to new players. The MP5 is a god gun and they should be using it.

Personally the commando feels like it has awful recoil. I've had a lot better luck with the aug.

On the topic of great new person operators, I've found IQ to be extremely intuitive for when I was learning maps. It helps your team and gives you an idea of where people like to put traps.

When I played Rook I felt like I wasn't really learning very much about how the game really works.

Jinkies! Looks like we've got a mystery on our hands.
Rook is solid all around, especially for newer players who want to contribute but aren't confident in themselves. I got plenty of use out of him when I was starting, and even these days when I can tell I'm outclassed in a match I sometimes pick him as a favor to the better players on my team. Rook armor is a big deal if you have a genuinely skilled Ela or Cav out there carrying.
