I got Sleigh Bells tickets for Christmas and I'm pretty pumped to go. No-one cares about Sleigh Bells these days except for me I guess, but I thought their little mini-album they released this year has some really superb songs on it.
Jessica Rabbit loving ruled and I saw them last year at a festival and it was great. Their bass/drum mix kicked me right in the throat. Alexis has a hell of a stage presence too.

Chvrches confirming new album and a bunch of shows this year (though not announced). I can't wait to see them again. Martin's Under the Tide is still one of the best live experiences.

I've seen Chvrches seven times, but at the last two they played High Enough to Carry You Over instead :(

It was still good, but wasn't Under the Tide good.

Saw CHVRCHES earlier this year or last year, can't remember and I didn't really enjoy it.

All I could hear was the bass and her vocals, none of the interesting synths and keys that are in the songs. Now this may have been poor acoustics in the venue, I was in a mid tier balcony in the back so maybe only the highs and lows were being funneled to me, but overall I was unhappy. The crowd did that annoying thing at a seated show where everyone stood, but barely anyone around me was actually dancing.

On the plus side, Lauren is very personable and her banter was fun. Just wished I enjoyed the actual performance more.

Was anyone else a little underwhelmed by Every Open Eye? I found a few of the songs formulaic and some of the lyrics pretty inartful. "Bury It and Rise Above" comes to mind as a good example — the riff and chorus are just so monotonous. Not to say I didn't like the album altogether — I thought "Down Side of Me" was good, and "High Enough to Carry You Over" was a real surprise — maybe my favorite track.

It might just be that The Bones of What You Believe is that good that it's hard to match. Still, I'm looking forward to their next album and would definitely see them live again, and think Lauren Mayberry is a real force for good in pop culture.

It was a half-step back for me too, but mostly because it felt rushed. None of the tracks has room to breathe, it's just 3 seconds of intro and then "bam okay I guess the lyrics start now." And when you write these oblique lyrics, you're always straddling a fine line between being Jeff Mangum and being laughable, and EOE just missed the mark more than Bones. It happens.

I'm worried a bit about the next LP mostly for those reasons. I'm getting the same feeling I had leading up to Arcade Fire's Everything Now, and we all saw how that turned out.

Do you use earplugs? I honestly noticed a difference from the two times I saw them, her vocals and synth were much more audible with earplugs. I've noticed this with a few repeat bands when I started using plugs, but I've heard complaints of early Chvrches suffering on vocals before Lauren found her groove.

I don't use earplugs, no. I saw them on the rail at Webster Hall (RIP) in 2013, and early-stage Lauren was apparent but not glaring. And then mid-crowd at T5, infamous venue and all, they sounded far better.

I still have a setlist from that Webster show I've thought about sending out to get autographed. Does anyone have experience sending stuff out like that? I'm guessing it doesn't exactly work like it does for baseball cards.

Not sure if they'll do it this time around but on the last tour Chvrches had a fan mailbox at the merch booth that you could drop anything into and Lauren would reply.

EOE dropped almost 2 years to the day Bones did, so I'm sure it was certainly a little rushed to capitalize on all the hype they built in 2014 and the chemistry and energy they were probably feeling from touring. Looking forward to seeing what the break does for them.

forget about ur worries and ur strife
Matt & Kim are on an incredible streak where every album they release is markedly worse than the last. I’ll stan for Grand any day and Sidewalks is pretty good, but everything starting with Lightning is this weird no-mans land where the music is simultaneously trying to latch on to millennial culture while also trying to create the most car-commercial music possible.

If I had to name a band I think will definitely withstand the test of time, I'd gush about Chairlift.

Chairlift are probably best known for the single they had on an Apple commercial, "Bruises". I first discovered Chairlift in 2012 at an indie dance party with music videos when this came on. I was transfixed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98XRKr19jIE

I made a note of them and got their second album, Something, later that year for Christmas. I listened to it over and over, and I couldn't believe how good the songwriting and production was. Over the years I checked out the rest of their stuff and I think it's all good. Even more, they have any have a good diversity of sounds across each of their three albums.
  • Does You Inspire You (2008), their first album, is quite playful — very much a "we wrote this in college album" — lots of songs about silly things, a few experiments, but a few pretty good tracks, and "Bruises" really is Chairlift at their best.
  • Something (2012) is more consistent. The album has a little bit of a dark thread running through it, and I I think most of the aggression on the album is directed toward a departing member of the group who had been in a relationship with the singer. Supposedly the opening track, "Sidewalk Safari", is meant for him, which makes it the most fun and eloquent angry breakup song ever.
  • Moth (2016) would be their last album. It's much brighter, and upbeat album written while Polachek was falling in love with her now husband. Warmer, slicker tracks with some R&B influences where the last album was moody and more bold synth sounds. Something is my favorite, but I still listen to Moth a lot, and would recommend Moth over Something if you prefer your music on the joyful side.
Sadly, they decided to break up in 2017 to pursue separate projects, but that was the only thing they ever did to disappoint me, and they even had the decency to do a farewell tour. Talented musicians both, and together a real class act.

Recommended if you like indie electronic acts a little on the arty side like Neon Indian, YACHT, Poliça, and Yeasayer.
