I picked Max because he got the belt in dominant fashion. Not the Whittaker's foght against Romero wasn't a bit lopsided but Max seemed more impressive due to the finishes.

Like when? His knee got hosed up against Romero, I can't think of another time apart from that. He doesn't fight super often so maybe he does need more rehab time for niggling injuries, but I can't remember any other major reported injuries.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

I went with Mighty Mouse because he's still Mighty Mouse but he also put in two of the best performances of the year of any fighter and topped it off with the suplex armbar. No one can touch him.

Terrorising José Aldo twice is incomparably the greatest accomplishment of the year to me. He did to Aldo what people make the Conor Aldo fight out to be.

He's broken his hand in two different UFC fights and the knee injury. He's on the Cruz/Weidman path right now of beating everyone and getting injured almost every fight.

we're so bad at wrestling

I was in high school when we won the 2000 olympics, and the government started throwing money at a bunch of sports that we traditionally weren't competitive in, as if ~5 years would have been enough time to be anywhere near countries that had been doing it forever. My school got funds for handball and wrestling. We hired a high school wrestling coach from America, and I did it for a couple of years but no one ever thought we'd get anything out of it. The teacher was like "you can't just take athletic 14-16 year olds and expect them to be able to wrestle with people of the same age who have been doing it since they were 6". It was fun, and I made the State championships (lost in the second round) but we were kidding ourselves. Literally any high school wrestler from the US who had been doing it their entire school life would have breezed through every single person in my division. I weighed 81kg at the time so I competed in the 85kg bracket, instead of not eating or drinking for half a day and going to the 80kg bracket.

I think the only thing Australia got out of that program was the tkd gold medal won by Lauren Burns - she had been doing it since she was a kid, and the funding allowed her to take a year off everything leading up to the games to focus on her training.

Speaking of which...

Whittaker earned the right to fight for a gold medal in April by winning at the Australian wrestling trials on Saturday. That followed his win at the Australian Wrestling Championships in May in the 97 kilogram division.

I like Mighty Mouse and all but either Whittaker or Holloway have to be fighter of the year. The way they've improved from their early UFC fights is staggering. One of them got dropped while striking with Colton Smith and the other (legitimately) lost a fight against Leonard Garcia. Now they're both champions.

I never like making someone who only fought twice fighter of the year. Holloway beat the same guy twice which isnt amazing, dj beat like #12 ranked ray borg, whittaker's wins were cool and elite but only 2 of em and really not that much more impressive than tyron. Rda and volkan had three solid wins, but i dont think either of them are fighter of the year.

I think I picked RDA for fighter of the year for pretty much these reasons.

Fighter of the year should go to the fighter whose victorious fighting contributed the most to our enjoyment of watching fighting, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
