Kameh, update your clubs accordingly.

This is rough on me, as the last Callaway driver I ever hit was a Callaway FT-Q (one of the first square ones). The last Callaway driver I owned was a steelhead Big Bertha.

I know DJ and Rory are on a different level, but they really have me looking at the M3 and M4 drivers. They're supposed to be REALLY good.

Then again, the M2 was supposed to be good, but I'm satisfied rocking my Cobra F6+. Whoever said it's all about shafts now is correct.

All of the OEMs are making driver heads that are pushing the bleeding edge of what is legal. Getting fitted for the right shaft will make a hell of a lot more difference than the actual driver head if you’re shopping all of the 2018 models.

DJ eagled that par 4 in back to back rounds, that's pretty cool. I did that once but the hole is ~240 instead of 433. Close enough though imo.

Anyone have any grip tape and solvent recommendations? I'm planning on doing my whole bag in the next couple months.
Golfsmith grip tape and solvent are fine, but I used lighter fluid for the longest time and it works too.

The big "innovation" with M3 and M4 is twist-face which may or may not really help you. Considering how far you have to miss the sweet spot to see where twist-face diverges from normal bulge and roll, I don't think the benefit is really there.

TaylorMade has a mostly deserved reputation for pushing out new driver models at a crazy rate but over the last 5 years or so Callaway has actually been outpacing them (and so has Cobra, for that matter).

My 2016 M2 driver and M1 3 wood were just over $200 combined, the driver could have passed for new and the 3w only has a little more wear (but no sky marks or anything). For all the complaining you see about high prices and fast product cycles, golf equipment can still be pretty affordable if you shop around a bit.

Almost every club in my bag I bought as old-new stock. 4-PW GW mizuno JPX 850, Cobra Max driver, and my lob wedge was given to me by my brother in-law, so it was free. My wife bought my drat putter as a birthday gift by literally asking the sales guy for the “best” putter they sell. I got the most expensive one instead. But it’s pretty good. I will never buy the New Hotness.

First time ever for me. Three rounds in a row, over a long time frame, same score. Third 79 in a row. I have to get off this course and play elsewhere, it's familiarity as much as playing well (though, this was the best round of 79 in that group, just a good, complete round.) I converted one of about 5 legitimate birdie opportunities, and it was on the last hole. Started on 10, my birdie putt on 9 was 2 feet.

Saw a change in my game today for some reason. Weather was nice (72, partly cloudy, incredibly windy), so I hit the local muni for an improptu 18 holes. Shot a dead-honest 94 --no mulligans, no gimmes, not even tap-ins-- which is good for me. I'll shoot mid-80s on an Ahhh-hit-it-again day with my friends.

Anyway, grouped with with a couple of septuagenarian retirees and had a good old time. Putted very, very lovely. LOTS of 3-putts. Hit a par-5 green in two and then 4-putted. gently caress. But this is not what I'm writing about.

I hit my long irons like a machine, but couldn't hit my hybrids for poo poo. I've been keeping 4H 3H in my bag lately, with the rest irons. I've been working on my long irons quite a bit at the range (encouraged by this thread), so I added my 4I to the bag before I left. By the time we were through 12 holes, I was leaving the hybrids in the bag and hitting my 4I exclusively for anything 170 or longer, because I was swinging the hybrids like dogshit. Topping everything I swung at. (I don't own a fairway wood.) Hit the 4I almost flawlessly all day. Hit all my irons very well, actually.

So is this just a result of hitting long irons way more than anything else at the range lately? Like in my last dozen trips to the driving range, 80% of my swings have been with 4I & 5I, because they've been my weakest club by far (aside from the putter, obviously). Maybe I'm subconsciously swinging the hybrids like I swing my driver, hence the thin/topped shots, I don't know.

I've never felt really comfortable with hybrids, anyway. And I've always felt very good swinging short & medium irons. Today I felt just as good swinging long irons. I've spent the past couple weeks using an Orange Whip, which has evened out my tempo and helped prevent overswinging (among other things). Maybe that's why I feel so much better swinging the 4I. Again, I don't know. I'm a caveman. Overreaction to poo poo-can the hybrids for now & go grab a 3I off eBay?

Try to balance your practice time. You concentrated on a weakness, which is good, but the swing is not the same for a hybrid so it needs some repetition, too.

Edit: Its 18 degrees and I have a foot of snow. It was 67 degrees when I walked off the course on Friday.

Sergio won in Singapore.
Mcilroy finished T3 in Abu Dhabi.
Andrew Landry (hometown boy) took Jon Rahm to 5 holes in a playoff on the PGA Tour.

This weekend could have been pretty special if all 3 had pulled it out.

This week is REALLY something to watch. Sergio's defending in Dubai, Mcilroy coming off that great finish after so many months off, and Tiger's playing Torrey Pines.

Great stuff.

Have an impromptu golf trip to Vegas in the works, spending 4 days there in mid February with a buddy and we’re planning to play at least once per day. A 36-hole day at Paiute is on our list so far.

Recommendations for courses that aren’t crazy expensive? We’ll have a car so anywhere is fair game.

Thinking we’ll try to stay on the strip though, anyone have hotel preferences that are easy to get in and out / have parking? Probably trying to keep it below $150/night.

The Arroyo was a fun course with a lot of variety from hole to hole. We got a groupon when I was down there and I think we got on for 30 a head, but the regular is still 60ish bucks.

I've only played The Wolf at Paiute, but definitely my favorite golf course down in Vegas. Also, if you haven't golfed in Vegas, be ready for some insane winds once the temperatures start rising in the afternoon.

I have the Cobra F6+. It's a great head, but it's 460. One of the last Nike drivers made, the Vapor Flex 440, might be something you could look into.

It's strange to me to see someone want to switch from Titleist. The 915 is a really, really solid driver. I looked into it for a bit before sticking with Cobra. Everyone that I know that plays Titleist sticks either has the matching driver or the TM M1/M2. Brand loyalty and all.

I’m the biggest Titleist fanboy you’ll ever meet and even I think the 917 series isn’t a huge improvement over the 915. The biggest thing is being able to go from the D3 to the D2 without a jump up in spin.

Yeah, I've regripped my own clubs. It's pretty easy - might take an hour or two to do a whole set if it's your first time. A vice of some sort makes a big difference. Otherwise, follow the steps in this video or any other "how to regrip golf clubs" youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1N6KIxE3iY

In my experience, some golf stores will comp their installation fee if you buy a full set of new grips. It might be worth calling around and saving yourself the effort and mess...unless of course you're super gung-ho about DIY.
