Because it's a first person shooter video game and the specifics of how the evil alien unbonerer works doesn't actually matter at all.

Deep down, I can understand why Half-Life 3 never materialized. Catch lightning in a bottle again with even higher expectations when there're easier and profitable routes available? I'd shy away from that as well. I'll never understand why Episode 3 died on the vine, though. They had an outline, concept art, they could've brought the story to an end of sorts, and they just canned it quietly.

Yeah and I mean like... the episodes are only supposed to be a few hpurs of content, and to not really boost the engine or anything too much. Even releasing it this late, it would still be acceptable for it to jus tuse only rhe sort of improvements that other games have added to the source engine.

Episode 3 is supposed to be HL3/the end of the series. One last relatively short episode to wrap things up. It's not like it would be difficult for Valve to make the drat thing.

I'm really starting to actively dislike Valve.

Source Engine is such a malleable engine as well it's crazy that Valve has done jack poo poo with it. Those visual overhauls I separated from the hentai and bridge obsession show just how pretty the engine can be. Titanfall uses Source, and it looks great. But Valve only ever uses it to update TF2 every now and then, and Portal 2's graphics have been hosed for years now because the last patch completely wrecked the DX11 (or 10?) settings so any wet surface doesn't have ambient occlusion and looks ugly as sin.

Aren't they working on a Source 2 now? They're probably focusing effort on that rather than trying to give Source any sort of last hurrah. They may be interested in getting into the Engine game alongside Epic, which they wanted to do with Source originally but kind of failed at because the original release wasn't flexible enough to really work as a general purpose engine for sale (which is why VtM: Bloodlines is so hacky with the things mentioned earlier in the thread like inventory items being hard-coded).

It's never going to happen, Marc Laidlaw's departure and leak of the expected plotline basically proves that. His story has a fairly open ending, but it would've been easy to close it off, have the Combine be driven from Earth but still out there somewhere, while Alyx and the G-Man have disappeared to parts unknown.

Titanfall's Source is heavily, heavily rewritten for current-gen consoles, and the Source tools are a nightmare from which no light escapes.

Source 2 is basically Source 1 but with 64-bit, various re-writes of things that were middlewares like Havok Physics and Scaleform UI, and tools that were written this decade. Dota's been running Source 2 for a while now, and it looks like CS:GO's slowly backporting stuff from it in preparation for a transition at some point. I think there's also some VR stuff that uses Source 2, but my computer would explode into a million pieces at the thought of VR so I haven't paid too much attention.

HL3 will never happen, they probably concluded that they cannot use RNG microtransaction model on a mostly single-player game and they cannot turn it into an addictive e-sport.

Local stores tend to be cheaper. I just checked some stores located in my country, one of them was selling HoI4 for 34.39 € (Steam has it for 39.99 €), other two were selling it for less than 20 €. All digital distribution. Also, I tend to buy games directly from companies (if I can), not everyone is dependent on Steam. Steam is just convenient, but many older games can be bought cheaper all year round elsewhere and not just during the Steam "sale".

Sure. Article is mainly aimed at people who idealize Valve and similar companies. Or at people naive enough to consider making content for their Workshop. And practices of some companies might be worse than the others'.
