Ouch. Seems like the Rangers have had a couple defensemen playing through injuries when they shouldn't. McDonagh has looked better since the week off, though.

Well that might explain why Shattenkirk's production trailed off lately...

Injury bug really going after the Rangers this season

Calling up Dan Catenacci is loving weird though, dude wasn't a standout in any way during training camp and doesn't seem to be a standout in Hartford

ALSO ALSO the Rangers assigned Lias Andersson to the Wolfpack. Which is...weird, kind of? He had a slow start to the season in Sweden after being worn down by not taking any break over the summer, then got things going, then had a great WJC but hurt his shoulder, went to rehab with the Rangers, and now is apparently going to play in Hartford? I guess they're maybe hoping he could help later in the season? Kind of feel like why send him back to Sweden in the first place...

Thank god Rick Nash is back to lead them to the playoffs by scoring at least 2 goals per game

Think the Rangers missed the boat on that one. He's not gonna get fired as long as they're in a playoff spot and even if they fall out he's got the injury excuse. Maybe after the season it could happen.

i guess it would be kind of good to do it in the offseason because if we do it during the regular season he'll be replaced by ruff and we'll probably get the usual post-coaching change dead cat bounce and back into a decent playoff position en route to a first round exit and ruff will get credit for helping after taking over and be given a full year or more as coach which would suck. in the offseason we could clear out the whole coaching staff

Yeah unless they really turn things around and go deep in the playoffs I'm not really sure AV is gonna be back next season. Too many of the same problems over and over, system really sucks unless it's played perfectly

having not paid attention to the Avalanche at all really, I was surprised to see Nathan Mackinnon is now 2nd in scoring and that Mikko Rantanen is having a really great sophomore season.

edit: also Carolina is the worst team in the Metro and their record is still significantly better than 5 teams in the Atlantic lol

The fact that Bourne felt the article was even necessary (since a lot of people were killing Nylander online for the play) is hilarious in itself. The second Gardiner wavered in his direction I knew they were hosed.

I know Bowen and his colour guy did blame Willy for it on the radio too, which just goes to show you that being paid to watch hockey for 50 years doesn’t necessarily give you insight on it and also lots of people just parrot out whatever they hear on the broadcast.

Surprised nobody mentioned Malkin doing this thing. Brown later tried to make up for it by doing this thing:

Brown got a 5 and a game, Malkin got nothing. Malkin probably won't even get a fine for that because the NHL is dumb and lets nut shots go unless you're such a huge rear end in a top hat that you do it like twenty times like Marchand.

That's how Deathstroke defeated the Flash.

Except Deathstroke's power is super intelligence, and Malkin one time misspelled the letter on the front of his sweater.

Should the Calgary Flames make an offer for Erik Karlsson?

The Flames have built a war chest of solid young prospects, not just on the farm but in junior and the NCAA where Harvard rearguard Adam Fox is one of the very best in college hockey.

Although devoid of significant draft picks for the next few years, what if the Flames offered up a package that included Fox, a top goalie prospect (former NCAA champ Jon Gillies or former Memorial Cup/world junior champ Tyler Parsons) and another stud defensive prospect in either Rasmus Andersson or Oliver Kylington?

Would you do it then if you were in the Flames camp?

Would the Senators bite?

Would the Flames have to include a roster player as well?

Or is that too high a price for a year-and-a-half rental of arguably the NHL’s best defenceman over the last seven years?

That offer is trash but you do have to remember we're dealing with Ottawa here. If they do move Karlsson it probably will be almost purely for futures since Eugene would love to cut salary.

I was about to post about how if you're trading Karlsson you better be getting young NHLers with high upsides in return along with picks and such and not just prospects that could go either way but then I read your post and realized that you are entirely correct.

E; trade Karlsson to the Rangers, watch him struggle trying to play AV's system like everyone else

Would it be TOO much to include a roster player in a trade with a maybe 2nd pairing defenceman, a maybe backup goaltender and an AHL level defender for arguably one of the top 5 players on earth? I don't know. Hard to say.

I thought severely overrating a team's prospects was just a fan thing, but apparently not. I've said it before and I'll say it again, being a sports journalist is actually the easiest job out there. I think it's not surprising that a NHL coach has a dumb blindspot for mediocre grinders....they all seem to do it. It's when they get so far up their own rear end that they'll play the guy big minutes despite poor results and justify it with "well but he works hard" then it's really a problem.

I think bumping those grinder/energy types up in the lineup occasionally can work short term depending on the situation but it never works long term yet coaches always want to hang on just a bit too long...

What I got out of that Babcock word salad is that Komarov is hard working and professional and maybe other people are not as hard working and professional as Babcock would like and so he is trying to use Komarov as an example to the others that if you are hard working and professional you get ice time.

I'm not sure that's good coaching but I'm pretty sure a lot of other coaches do similar things.
