Yeah, making IE easier to find/more available is as easy as you expect. It could be done in a half-dozen different ways at any stage of the process.

You could even push a shortcut to the users desktop that runs "iexplore.exe https://shittywebapp.com"

Changing the default PDF handler however.. not as easy.

Thank you.

What I don't get is how Edge becomes the default handler anyway, as we install Reader in addition to Chrome during prep.

I don't know if it still does it, but on older versions of Windows 10 (1500s I think), when Reader does it's thing during installation to make it the default for PDFs, Windows 10 decides to "help" and let you know "something tried to change the default pdf reader, we changed it back to Edge." You actually have to go into Control Panel to fix it, or right-click -> Open With. Fixing the issue in our image involved creating an entirely new image. Also, setting default taskbar/start menu items involved waaaaaaayyyyyyy more work than it should (you need an XML file imported during initial login).

Easiest thing to do is probably add the IE shortcut to the app via GPO.

God drat that's awful. At least it's usually a painless phone call to help someone fix it. The IE issue gets people way more worked up for some reason.

We've put a lot of work into fixing up our image for poo poo like that. We even figured out how to bring back the old Windows 7 Photo Viewer, since the Windows 10 photo viewer doesn't work if you block the Microsoft Store. Same with the calculator.

You should be able to set up IE Enterprise mode in GPO, then attempting to open any of the Enterprise mode configured sites in Edge automatically moves you to IE instead.

This is only true if you're using a Win10 version older than 1607. And even then there are workarounds (except for mandatory profiles).

Changing default file associations isn't very hard at all, we had to do it very recently for several different file types: https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/pdfviewer.html

option 2 is what we went with, it's similar to the startmenu config you can do in 10 (and maybe 8?), except not as awful; get a good machine to base it off of, export xml with DISM, remove entries you don't care about, point GPO at that and push it down or put it somewhere all machines have access to, win.

*edit* I am amused that it was the adobe site I pulled that from

I'm not disputing that the method is a little ridiculous, but frankly a quick powershell plus a properly formatted XML is I think a lot better than the previous generally accepted method, which was a stupid VBS script. Emphasis of course on properly formatted since if you gently caress up even a tick of the formatting it won't loving import you fuckers Microsoft.

God damn it, you've got to be kind.
After years of bad sleep due to horrible neighbors I usually get up at least once each night between 11pm-2am for an hour so. Tonight I woke up around 1:20am and decided to web surf a little while. I went to the corporate webmail page and it didn't respond. Remote Desktop also wasn't responding. I checked LogMeIn and saw that my work laptop went offline at around 1:20am. My phone couldn't connect to collect work mail.

The timing seemed too strange with everything going offline when I woke up. I did more checking and no services appeared to respond. Finally I called my desk phone and it picked up and voicemail worked so I knew that the building power was on and things weren't totally dead.

Ah well.

I pulled myself together and drove to work. Sat down at my desk and everything appeared normal. Took my phone off the wifi and used it to check mail, Remote Desktop, etc. and everything was responding. HMMMMM! I logged into the firewall to look at traffic and saw that from 1:17am to 1:44am there was a dead spot. So basically from the moment I woke up to the moment I made my test call to work. If I'd made my call just a couple of minutes sooner it wouldn't have gone through. I checked LogMeIn and saw that all the monitored systems at HQ had come back online at 1:44am.

I've woken up a couple of times to find that things were offline but the timing of this particular outage is weird as poo poo.

I cashed out my $100 of bitcoin last month. There were a few hoops to jump through, but the money was in my checking account in a couple days.

$500 or even $1000 shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

My understanding is that you start seeing delays when you are trying to regularly cash out multiple thousands at a time. And most of the exchanges have a $10000 cap.

Only browser java we got left is kronos timecards, and even that has an "inferior" javascript version which ironically is superior in functionality to the java client. So everyone bookmarks that version anyways.

We do have java in a number of server installs, like jenkins. But java for backend stuff doesn't bother me as much.

Though ajp can piss off forever and I'm glad it's dead/dying.

So Spotify, even when one has a paid account, still tries to connect to tracking websites. I don't care how many people I probably infected with COVID-19 while refusing to wear a mask, my comfort is far more important than the health and safety of everyone around me!

Owners of the company 'clean out their house' every 3-4 months and bring in random computer poo poo and leave it on our desks. Usually poo poo some like busted rear end inkjet printer or random 17" LCD

Is this junk? Do you want it fixed? Thrown away? Is there a problem with it?

LEAVE A loving NOTE FOR ONCE

If we don't call and ask about it, someone will come down 5 minutes before they leave and say "So and so left a laptop down here for me that they said you were going to setup so I could use it for the weekend..."

Sure, go fire up this $399 Staples Black Friday 2009 special that runs Windows Vista and has no power cord.

If we ask about it, we either get ignored, or told to just throw it away.

Today's haul: slightly dented 2011 MacBook Pro. They told me to throw it out (why didn't you just throw it out in your home garbage?) so I'll take it home and see if it boots up first.
