I've beaten Saints Row 2 now - it was pretty fun, although controlling Helicopters was a bitch, especially in the Tornado while assaulting the Ultor building, that part of the mission was really annoying. Still don't like Johnny Gat, although I appreciate that they humanised him a little at the funeral it was too little too late for a character who's entire characterisation was "Hey you got a plan? Let me immediately screw it up by being an overly violent dipshit!" I also liked that they referenced the Boss's initial role as the Silent Protagonist/Errand Boy and his ascent to terribleness (I hesitate to say "Greatness", he's awful) since literally finding his voice.

Also the bosses were appropriate to the character which was cool, like Maero simply throwing himself at you with a Minigun then Monster Truck, straightforward and brutish, or the General who hides behind his Henchmen and hiding inside of increasingly powerful vehicles. The Katana bosses in the Yakuza missions were neat too.

While I bought 3 as well along side this one I'll probably hold off and play something else though, because I'm likely to burn out on it playing 2 20-hour games in the same series.

If you haven't bought it, get SR4 as well. 3 is a different engine and a bit of a different beast than 2, but still fun in it's own way. 4 Builds further on what 3 did in some fantastic ways, and playing through 2 will pay off quite a bit. You can skip the last release, which was basically $20 DLC. It is a short, but complete game

I was buying a bunch of old 360 games with a £20 gift voucher so I got what looked interesting for that cumulative price. I may get 4 sometime after 3, but won't be for a bit.

The boss is an idiot. That's why he delegates to Shaundi and Pierce. Shaundi is a blowout and she's still smarter than him. The Boss is like Gat- an entertaining character, but I don't like him or trust him to make good decisions.

One of the reasons I love Saints Row 2 is that it pulls off the antihero thing better than any other game I’ve played, and for the protagonist no less. In most games, an antihero is just a hero in eyeshadow. They might bust a few more heads than the average hero, but at the end of the day, they pretty much make the same desicions that a conventional hero would.

In SR2, the boss is the main character, and you root for them, but they are not heroic by any stretch.. They are a deranged psychopath for whom the definition of the word revenge is taking the hand of the person who took your fingertip. Yet, the writing is good enough that you still put yourself in their shoes.

I think I'm just annoyed about the treatment of Pierce - his plan for the casino seemed like fun, finally in a mindless shooter we get a mission that's more Danny Ocean, that could have been interesting to play, but Johnny steps in and it's just one of a dozen strongholds because he can't think ahead. I liked Pierce, outside of when he was bitching about Shaundi.

It's the Boss who craps on Pierce, not Johnny.

That aside there is an arc for Pierce over the course of the games. He's amazing at PR and publicity, but not as smart elsewhere as he thinks he is.

The whole thing about the Casino mission is that it's supposed to be poking fun at the Casino heist mission line in GTA: San Andreas, except this one is much simpler and straight forward instead of the boring, roundabout bullshit it was in SA. Also it gives them a chance to dunk on Pierce.

I prefer consoles, more stable and I can be certain my machines can run them. My computer would probably crash trying to play Horizon Zero Dawn. Exceptions are games that are PC Only.

If you have a wired 360 controller, it should work automatically for most major PC games.

That wouldn't fix framerate problems or crashing though, also bonus: Consoles I can use from my comfy couch as my living room is much bigger than my computer room. Certainly SR2 froze and had framerate issues on my Xbox, but it's less likely that a game bought for a machine literally built to run it will have problems.

If it helps contextualise, because I am bad at games I tend to take even the sillier games seriously because I want to succeed in the missions and win the game. When I know what I'm doing on a later playthrough I can dick around, but while just trying to get through the game I'm fairly straightforward. Basically I am Pierce IRL.

It's been a while, but isn't Pierce's plan actually the same as San Andreas' casino heist?

If you have a decent pc, crashing and frame rate are a non issue.

I think so. I think he's even got The Boss (or maybe Shaundi? It's been a while since I've played it) sleeping with an employee to get a keycard.

My PC's a few years old now and I don't have the excess money to replace it. Also to reiterate - it's also a comfort thing: My living room is 6 times the size of my computer room so feels less cramped for doing more active things like video games, and I like my couch.

It's occurred to me that Julius and the Boss are Jimmy Hopkins and Gary Smith - it's just that this time Gary wins. Julius wanted to unite the gangs and use the influence to end the violence and generally make the city a better place to live, while The Boss just wants power over others without responsibility. Also that last talk during Revelations was interesting because of that - under Julius's rule, the Saints name may not have become ironic - he was trying to make them good people in the long run.

Not only are they extremely cheap, they natively support the big name controllers.

Plus you can exit Big Picture mode at any time and use your PC on a huge TV.

Kind of interesting is how the start of the third game basically says that the Saints do become almost completely sanitized after taking over Stillwater. They still do things like rob banks but it is seen as more of a publicity event than an actual crime. It's only when the other gangs show up that things get violent again.

Jokatgulm is tedium.
Jokatgulm is pain.
Jokatgulm is suffering.

I replayed the original Kane & Lynch recently and while it's not great overall at points it's decent tactical shooter with pretty functional squad commands(probably based on IOIs experience with Freedom Fighters) but the thing that makes it interesting is that it you play as a pair of complete gently caress-ups that basically fail at everything in the game but it never feels like they "reverse" what the player did in the way other games do, including IOI's own Hitman Absolution. Also the game has no sympathy for it's rear end in a top hat protagonists which is really refreshing since most games try to paint those as cool or edgy or in the case of games like Saints Row humorous. Everything really is their fault and it wrecks them & the people around them, even the ending where Kane tries to redeem himself leads to everyone getting killed.
