I actually just looked into joining USAA recently since my father was in the military as well, but currently, have no idea where he is. But as of right now if you have parents that served, you can join but you only have limited services that they offer. However, if your parents served and have had an account with them, then you get full benefits / services.

I know where my dad is but didn't want to bug him for this, especially since I'm 99% sure he doesn't have an account with them. I did end up going with State Farm as they were something like $40 a month cheaper than anyone else that quoted me for pretty drat good coverage. Colorado has pretty low minimum coverage and I went way over it.

What was hilarious was the driver. I was expecting your typical boy-racer type. Dude was like mid-50's, 5' 5", rail thin, couldn't stand fully upright, and shuffled instead of walked. And had a ponytail.

No gaudy gauges, dials, buttons or terrible screens that look slapped in. It's what was drawing me to the 1 last summer.

Last week I had a new Fiesta as a rental car. It was just the 1.1L Ti-VCT 85hp NA 3 cylinder but it made me pissed that the Fiesta ST isn't coming to the US. Interior was much, much nicer than current Fiesta, there's a bit more space, and the design just resolves quite a bit better. Good, low-end CarPlay implementation. Oh well.

Fellow Focus RS owners, if you have a 2016 or a 2017 that was built before July last year Ford has started to send out the recall letters to replace the head gasket and head if necessary. Finally confirmed that the plant in Spain where they build the 2.3 accidentally used some Mustang head gaskets they got in a wrong shipment.

Go to the Ford owner website or ETIS and type your VIN in and check to see if your car is affected. Ford has authorized replacement of the head gasket and possibly the head too if it is out of spec. Also have authorized dealers to provide loaners and/or rentals during the downtime.

Thankfully one of the local RS owners here is a Ford dealer mechanic, she's apparently got a dozen head gaskets on order and paperwork prepped for people to come in and get it done.

Is that Jessica up in Michigan? I’ve seen her posting about it on the FB groups and I might just have to contact her about taking my car to he as she seems to know her poo poo. Driving it up from Fort Wayne wouldn’t be the biggest pain as long as a loaner or rental is provided.

Yep, I'm in metro Detroit, so her shop is only 40 minutes away. I'll have to get it scheduled out in the next couple weeks.

I've bought a shitload of race gear (HANS device, few Sparco seats, Sparco gloves, other little things) from a company out of Ireland and I've never paid duty. YMMV

What is with the recent trend of having screens awkwardly protrude from the top of the dash? It was one of a few reasons we went with a Civic over the Mazda 3. It’s hideous and doesn’t look good in any car

It HAS to be one of the cost-first type of things. Why would you design around a screen integrated into the center stack when you can just stick it onto the top of the dash and only have to worry about running an electrical connection to it? Between cheap, functional, and aesthetically pleasing, they pick the first two.

I don’t think it makes any real cost difference - either way you’re moulding a dash with a hole in it.

wolrah
May 8, 2006
what?
I think it's more of a cost vs. flexibility thing. It makes it a lot easier for them to moderately change the screen size from year to year or offer multiple different screen sizes without having to redo a large portion of the dash.

Just realized that the mandatory back-up camera thing will make it so screens are also mandatory in center consoles. Like it was already hard to find a car without one of the drat ugly things but now it will be literally impossible. Hope some auto manufacturers incorporate covers for them or let you completely turn them off.
