Like I think the US dollar was more or less based on precious metals but nowadays its value isn’t actually backed up by much other than faith and common agreement?

This isn't necessarily wrong but it's also very simplistic. The dollar is backed up by the US economy, which is still one of the best places in the world to invest your capital. It's also backed up by the fact that US taxes must be paid in US dollars and also the military/police enforcing those taxes.

The 'nothing' behind fiat currency is not the same 'nothing' behind cryptos.

But yeah technically it's all just faith and agreement and there's obv no inherent value behind a scrap of parchment other than what people are willing to give you for it.

Money has also been an abstract concept to represent utility for a long time now too. Why is a commodity, or some limited source any more "real" than a note representing the economy of the issuing country

Fiat currency is a tool of the state to control the economy, I would say it has it support among the left wing

Uhh, yes it is great, only a bump in the road to the moon... In the same post they are admitting the Lightning Network will fix everything 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's just a temporary setback

"Despite this, we remain very optimistic about cryptocurrencies overall. There are a lot of efforts that we view as promising and that we can certainly imagine enabling support for in the future. We’re interested in what’s happening with Lightning and other proposals to enable faster payments. OmiseGO is an ambitious and clever proposal; more broadly, Ethereum continues to spawn many high-potential projects. We may add support for Stellar (to which we provided seed funding) if substantive use continues to grow. It’s possible that Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, or another Bitcoin variant, will find a way to achieve significant popularity while keeping settlement times and transaction fees very low. Bitcoin itself may become viable for payments again in the future. And, of course, there’ll be more ideas and technologies in the years ahead."

Interestingly while this was true once upon a time with stocks that offered dividends, it's not really so much the case with growth stocks. Similarly, any company whose debt exceeds its equity exists in a world in which shareholders wouldn't even be entitled to assets if the firm were liquidated but yet these shares trade at high multiples of earnings.

The vast majority of stocks traded on an exchange in 2018 are pure speculation.
