Fallout 4 is a fun open world game with a fairly satisfying core gameplay loop, even if it's a downgrade from previous titles in several crucial aspects. (You know, story, dialogue, reactivity. The rpg bits.) Ultimately, I had a good time playing it, even if the final impression was somewhat marred by the lovely endings.

Also, I hope the base-building never reappears in any of their games.

As much as I loved FO1 and 2 I don't want to see them remade - I enjoyed them when they came put and played both for years and I'd rather remember them that way for what they were.

There are a lot of very antiquated gameplay and game design techniques used in them that would probably just frustrate people today. Hell, even just having the ability to push people out of doorways makes me prefer playing 2 over 1 since I don't need to save every time I enter a building.

The settlement system feels, still, a lot like it was shoved in to fill the "sandbox survival Minecraft-like" checkbox and nothing else. I'm really glad Rise of the Commonwealth exists so I can just set poo poo up and let it run.

Now we just need to be able to assign non-companion NPCs as city leaders.

Base building is definitely here to stay. Not only is it the main focus of three of the five add-ons released, they keep churning out new Creation Club content based around it.

I actually hope the next thing they do is integrate it properly into the plot, with actual characters and quests and such. Building up Sanctuary to rival Diamond City is pointless when the game never acknowledges it, but building your own Diamond City could be interesting. The way they try to have it both ways by being divorced from the rest of the game is worse than not having it at all (which would be fine, but is not gonna happen).

I'm also the guy who spent hours meticulously decorating his tiny Novac hotel room in New Vegas though, so take my opinion on it with a grain of salt.

I still think the original was the better of the two (just with much less replayability). NPCs being obsessed with your putting your guns away got old pretty quickly though.

The Brotherhood being utter cunts when giving out their quest and the ending, will always bring the most fond memories. :)

I've made two attempts at Fallout 4 and I just can't bring myself to be invested. After about 10 or 15 hours I start getting bored with pretty much everything in the world and all of the characters (whose names I struggle to remember no matter how many times I see them). On my last run I got as far as reaching Virgil (whose name I had to look up because there was almost nothing memorable about his charter) before I lost any further desire to keep playing. Even modding in new guns and features like bullet time haven't been enough to keep me interested.

I ran into the same problem with Skyrim. I've played over 200 hours in Skyrim since its release, but never made it to the ending of the main quest because I just gradually lose interest before wanting to get back into it. I struggle to remember who anyone is or why they matter. It's just devoid of charisma.

The rail line and signal box provide an interesting start point to build around without taking up too much space. Can't really think of another place that pulled it off that well.

I mostly object to the opportunity cost of implementing all this poo poo. It really wasn't all that entertaining, once the novelty wore off and I am willing to bet the story content suffered from resources being pulled away from it and into this.

Cool, I'll take that bet. I'm willing to bet the story content suffered because the length of the voice pipeline and the overhaul to the character progression system meant they had to finalize the script before they knew what was possible in the game.

You could get in easily through the secret hatch in the gas station after you killed/snuck past the disguised guard standing out front. From there you do not meet a single other NPC between the tunnel and store room where they kept the armour. The hard part is save scumming your way there and back.

That was with the unofficial patch too! I can't imagine what the game is like without it.

The other major glitch I remember that almost made me quit was absurd. I slept with a woman in New Reno (I think that was the name of the city) and then all my companions vanished. I fought my way out of the casino now filled with angry mobsters alone, thinking they would be outside. Nope. They weren't at my car either. I even went and checked the places where I originally recruited them and they weren't there. They had ceased to exist. So that would of been the end of my run, but I decided to try one last thing; sleeping with the woman again. This caused my companions to magically warp back into existence :psyduck:

You'll take the ride to leave this town along that yellow line
fallout 4 is fun until it very suddenly becomes utterly trivial (around lvl 20?), or until you break the economy with water purifiers or just making drugs

there are some fun mods to improve it though. Overgrowth seriously reduces your visibility when outside the Boston ruins which can make combat tense again, and Some Assembly Required stripping most of the power armor pieces/suits out of the game means you aren't going to have 10 different suits of power armor around lvl 15

too bad the terrible plot and railroaded main characters means you can't conceivably play as anything other than a (easily distracted) parent.

on the upside, Far Harbor had excellent writing, and while Nuka World had a silly as hell premise for why your almost-certainly-a-Minute-Man-do-gooder character might team up with raiders, heading there right away from a new game (and cheesing your way through the gauntlet) let you (kind of, sort of) approach the game as a raider

I don't recall ever having that happen to me, but I usually never used companions in 1 or 2 (or 3, or NV or 4 for that matter) since I always found them to be a hassle. I do remember corpses with mission critical loot disappearing or simply being impossible to select being an issue from time to time.

I do remember sleeping with Bishop's wife and/or daughter then having to fight your way out of the Shark Club being a very nasty trap for new players. I remember at least one run ending there.

I also remember combat anywhere in Reno being a hilarious shitshow as every bouncer, guard, gambler, whore, pimp and bystander needed to go through their turn before you could move.

For real though, Fallout 2 is silly as hell but take out all of that (well, you'd have to rewrite talking deathclaws living in a communal pacifistic society being a major plot point, but the rest can be taken out easily enough) and it's still solid and still enormous on a scale that dwarfs the first game.

It also explores themes that the rest of the series barely touches on, like the divide between citizens/non-citizens in Vault City and all the different ways that can gently caress you over (certain companions not being allowed in, the danger of carrying a fake day pass, etc).

You needed to sneak in the back way via the gas station, steal the Mk II power armor, and then locate the sergeant patrolling inside the base and give him a hearty "SIR!" to show that you are respectful and cool and totally one of the guys.

Also when in combat the only acceptable way of playing is: Walking up to someone, jamming the Bozar in their groin, and pulling the trigger. The only NPCs where this is not the correct course of action are the thieving little shits standing outside all the stores in The Den: For those guys just make sure the only things in your pockets as you walk by are actively armed explosives.

i think i've clocked something like 800 hours in NV between the original PS3 release + all DLC and then rebuying the complete edition again on Steam a few year later. I've also played 4 to completion two different times, but it never held my interest long enough to bother getting into the DLC (even though I bought it :downs:)

based on all of my experience, i gotta say, 4 is the better game. by that i mean, the actual gameplay part of 4 is more fun. the gunplay is responsive, the melee combat feels visceral, building little fortress towns is cool as poo poo the first time you get introduced to it, crafting is 1000x better because it doesn't require that you have an exact item (eg. an empty whiskey bottle) and refuse to cooperate if you have a similar-but-not-identical item (eg. an empty tequila bottle). NV occupies a completely different stratosphere when it comes to quest design and branching choices and the game being reactive to your decisions, but holy hell it is loving HARD to play through NV on its 8 year old engine now.

i guess what i'm saying is, i would pay an embarrassing amount of money to have NV professionally recreated in the engine used by 4 (i know there's fan hacks of varying degrees of completion, but i am willing to be none of those will ever actually be finished). i know obsidian and bethesda left on bad terms after the NV review-bonus debacle, but holy gently caress NV in 4's engine would be my dream game.

This isn't true, FYI. I mean, it's true Obsidian missed out on a big payout thanks to a single point on Metacritic, but that's standard for the gaming industry and everyone at Obsidian has been completely open that they'd love to work on Fallout again.

Alternatively - a method that doesn't involve murdering children (seriously, why was this such a loving obsession for so long?) just engage combat, punch each kid one or twice until they've got to low HP, then allow them to flee and end combat. They will eventually return to their 'post' but every time you approach they will run away again. But without engaging combat. They also have no allied NPCs nearby so you don't have to fight off the entire town.

oh man, the first time i realized that you could murder flick in the den and take his entire inventory with no plot repercussions was a big day! except, doing that sends all 1049394 junkies on the map into panic combat. i did that exactly once on a 1998 computer and the amount of time it took for the game to sort out every NPC's actions meant that i have never attempted to do that again, even though i'm sure it'd be less painful on a modern computer.
