The devs won't support modding cause "muh vision" so it's gonna be one of THOSE games. But on the flipsides the modding community is making strides towards something so complicated as a COOP mod, so who knows what can be done.

New player question: I just got I guess the first big plot event of the game (Sunbeam destroyed, Enforcement Platform found, infection discovered) and I have a concern. Is there any kind of overall timer at this point? Would be a real drag if I'm having to race the clock instead of exploring at my own pace.

The concern there is There is no timer, enjoy the scenery. However, warpers now want to aggro on you by the "Working as intended, they ignore you until infected" mechanic.

Oh right. Build at least an outpost that can handle a fabricator where you saw that happen. Much, Much later this could either amount to nothing, or save you some backtracking.

I have a bioreactor and nuclear reactor going and between them they power my moonpool, battery charger, water filtration system and everything else I need. I also built a prawn suit but it’s so freaking slow that I’m just going to keep tooling around in my seamoth until I can built a cyclops to cart the prawn suit where I need it.

Shotgun beacons at points of interest and major intersections you want to remember with your Seamoth tour, to make your return trips with your slow boys got a lot faster. That's half the reason I make sure to have at least one storage container on the sea moth. A spare emergency power cell, a spare welder for all the times I'm an idiot and forgot I stashed it in a locker, and some extra beacons.

My brother bought me this for my birthday, and I've decided to go into it completely blind.

I was surprised it had a sci-fi setting and a sorta-kinda-Fallout-4ish build system. I've had persistent nightmares that incorporated thalassophobia before, so this was an amazingly threatening setting for a survive-and-build game.

I'm enjoying the game more because I'm actually exploring the setting more rather than checking the wiki for the solution. Tonight, I discovered all those useless cargo pods could be scanned with the thing I'd been holding for the last hour+.

Currently I'm limited by my ignorance of where to find silver. The database says it can be found in sandstone deposits, but for the life of me I've mined dozens of them and still can't rub two of them together. I've explored enough to figure out how to build The Cyclops, but I can't build a wire set. I'll figure it out.

Found a hole in the seabed that goes down 200+ meters. Thought I saw a structure(?) down there. Memorized the position between the pod and the ship. Upgraded my O2, built a handheld engine dohickey to get me down faster and a balloon to get e up faster. Wish me luck.

I'm not sure randomised maps would help with replayability, honestly. You might not know where to go specifically to get such and such components, but you wouldn't be going to anywhere really new in search of them. It'd just take longer.

Since you wouldn't be able beeline straight for known wrecks or know exactly how to find desired biomes, there'd be a whole lot more exploration needed, which feels pretty much like the spirit of the game.

If the developers don't want to change their vision of the game, you could just add some hard-coded conditions. Like, the Grand Reef is always in one corner of the map, the two Mushroom Forest biomes are always such-and-such distance apart from each other, lifepod X always spawns Y meters and Z depth from your starting location, etc.

The important story areas (islands, alien bases, the Aurora) could remain static, but changing the map would make exploration more exciting - especially if you also randomize the leviathan spawns somewhat.

(Speaking of which, managed to beat the game with only two leviathans encountered - the juvenile Ghost in Lost River, and the Sea Dragon near the PCF. Still haven't seen a Reaper. )

What a great game. Sound design when scraping the cyclops through narrow gaps and when monsters are beating on it was great.

I recommend having your cyclops blown up and reloading just because it's super cool.

Oh my god the cyclops radar makes everything underground a million times easier. Can't believe I crawled my way all the way down to the 1300m shaft without it - the second trip was muuuuch easier.

Also never saw magnetite until after I'd picked up some kyanite - I just never happened to explore past the mountain so I had a huge tech bonanza after my first deep road trip.

I would love a space game with the cyclops damage model of this game. Super tense to crawl all over it repairing damage.

I'm taking it slow as hell on my launch replay. But going as long as possible without air pipes or vehicles is still something I can't help doing, even if I haven't built anything better than a high capacity tank yet. 300+ depth trips with 135 seconds of air and an air bladder is sane, right? I almost died for no reason, but it's okay because I was able to shove 4 rubies and a gel sack sample into my pockets first!

"There. I've visited both islands, and finally unlocked the power cell charger to go with the moonpool I just unlocked. Now to build an ultra tank and... Maybe actually build a seamoth??"

Meanwhile, I can finally build a loving laser cutter, it took ages to find a second fragment for it. Normally I would have had the Aroura dealt with by now :v:

Didn't you know this is a nonviolent game? That's why invincible respawning killing machines chase you even if you shoot them with 20 crash fish.

Meanwhile I'm kind of baffled at how often I'm diving down to lifepods and either I've lost my touch looting them and around them, or I'm just overlooking some changes the wiki's still not up to date on "Oh cool, lifepod 12. That's always had the repulsion gun databox-there's no databox? Okay I'll take the flavor text PDA and dodge the amp eels some more"

And data boxes have a real obvious glow from quite a ways off, so I'm just hoping I somehow went past if for five minutes straight, rather than less lifepod payoffs.

On the bright side. I found a sea crown already while swimming wide circles around lifepods.

I expect the lack of sleep is making the old information in my head and the new status quo blur together. Something to look forward to after I deal with my crippling copper and silver shortage to get back into the vehicle lifestyle.

Honestly the thing I miss most from the very old days is resources just being shotgunned everywhere. Biomes, particularly the early ones feel so barren to me when you find three quarts in a tiny cave that has five crash fish, rather than grabbing 20+ in practically arms reach of the lifepod off the ground. I can't imagine hand picking enough quartz to build my stupid "I've got 60+ windows!" half glass towers setups I used to make when I've scooped up more lithium than copper and silver combined so far.

Realise I am a bit late for time capsule talk but I found three of them so far, though only after a decent amount of time playing. I felt kinda bad since two of them were full toolsets of scanner, welder, cutter, etc. and since I already had most of them I had to throw them out since I needed the inventory space. Kinda wish I could put them back in so someone who could actually use them would get them.

Also, hope the devs are not too stingy with what they let into those because I totally plan to put four of the PRAWN suit's hover engine enhancers since those apparently stack. Probably completely impractical but it sounds like it would still be amazing fun to use.
