The Bloop posted:I honestly can't tell if this is you being "funny" again it if you are an idiot The German word for "sea lion" is Seehund ("sea dog"), which is a folk-etymological hypocorrection of Seelhund, which shares the same root as the word "seal". So he could actually be half-correct that the "sea" in "sea lion" might originally come from seal.

My mom was a marine biologist so maybe I can help clear things up. There's a difference between Seals and Sea Lions, but the two are the same species. Seals is the word for females and males who have yet to stake a claim and assemble a harem. Once a male manages to establish dominance during mating season it sets up its territory on the beach and becomes a Sea Lion. They're the same species even though the appearance can be quite different due to the dimorphism of the species and the difference in age between young Seals and mature, bulkier Sea Lions. It's a little like the difference between juvenile Lions and the leader of a pride!

Sea lions can walk around on land fairly easily with an upright posture and have visible ears. Seals are known as beach maggots for how they wriggle around worm-like on their bellies.
