If you have a rebuttal, post it instead of grandstanding and slinging insults. You don't get to shut down discussion just because it's threatening to your worldview.

A rebuttal was already posted, idiot.

You're the one shutting down legitimate discussion by having the dumbest possible opinion, and insisting on a stupid detail of nonsense.

I've got bad news for you, but it's universally understood in law that emotions exist and are a real thing that people act on, which even factors into sentencing and the like.

I'm not cheering on for people to lynch Nassar, but not understanding why a guy wants to assault the man who molested his daughter under ostensibly his care is some serious lack of empathy. You're attributing to social hierarchy what is a natural human condition.

Fighting like beavers.
It is also understood in law that we have a responsibility to suppress our emotions and maintain a dignified standard of conduct.

Charging Father was upset when he heard his daughters speak. I empathize with him, it’s a horrible thing to go through. But he had time to reflect. He planned his actions. He asked the judge for permission to attack Nassar. The judge said “No.” He asked the judge again. She said “NO” again. Then he willfully ignores her and violently attacks.

Can you not see how awful that is, particularly in the context of this case? It is possible to have empathy for Charging Father, but still vehemently disapprove of his conduct and be unwilling to excuse it. He fell short of the standard the law requires. Hundreds of other fathers in this case went through the same thing he went through, without attacking the convict.

I've always just seen the headline and never knew he was asking for permission to attack, that adds a level of dumb premeditiation to it. It's still just as well he wasn't charged with anything, but that does change things, yeah.

Which, in cases like a man going to court because another man sexually assaulted all of his daughters, is much easier said than done.

If only there were more warning signs that Larry Nassar might be a pedophile.

quote:

Larry Nassar boasted that people called him "the body whisperer" because of his close connections with his patients, according to a 2014 police report.

"Most of the time my eyes are closed ... Use the force, you feel it," Nassar told a detective investigating him after a young woman said he sexually abused her. "It is a conceptual thing. It is you, the patient, and the spirit."

Nassar's comment came as part of a Michigan State University Police report looking into Amanda Thomashow's claim that he sexually assaulted her in March 2014.

quote:

Nassar said this was a normal procedure that he performed on everyone, whether 10 years old or 84 years old, according to the police report. He brought his computer to the police interview and showed the detective videos in which he performs the procedure, which he claimed could fix any number of physical injuries.

"I can fix their rib by touching their bottom," he claimed, according to the police report.

In Michigan State University's Title IX investigation, Nassar said that he had a PowerPoint presentation dedicated to the procedure. One of the slides contained "Star Trek" images and was entitled, "Pelvic floor: Where no man has gone before," according to the Title IX report.

As soon as the Star Trek slides came up on Nassar's presentation, the officers should've arrested him from there. It's the smoking gun.

It is understandable, and I can't comprehend his pain, let alone the pain of his daughters, but I would note that hundreds of women have made statements in court against Nassar without it even being considered that they might fly into a violent rage, and it's worth thinking about why they didn't, and why he did.

I won't condemn him for it, because I don't know how I'd do in the same circumstances, but I am irritated by all the people online saying "This guy's a great Dad" or "he did what a Dad should", because I think that's a toxic attitude. We shoudn't lionize guys who fly into violent rages, even if it is directed at the world's most deserving target.

Yeah, basically they were trying build a profile and "Star Trek fan" was one box that was overwhelmingly ticked. I think they even tried to adjust for certain things and even then they couldn't explain it as anything other than "well, if you like diddling kids you are gonna love Kirk vs. Picard debates too".

This might end up being something. Apparently the Notre Dame AD advised USA gymnastics.

quote:

Two former USA Gymnastics presidents have cited a longtime power player in Indiana sports as one of the key people involved in advising USA Gymnastics on policies related to sexual abuse: Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

In an interview with IndyStar, Mike Jacki, USA Gymnastics president from 1983 to 1994, said Swarbrick discouraged the organization from distributing a booklet on child abuse to its members.

And former President Steve Penny, who served from 2005 to 2017, cited Swarbrick as the organization's legal counsel in a 2015 deposition and said sexual abuse issues were "managed by our attorney." Ultimately, however, USA Gymnastics' board is responsible for setting policy.

I am also glad the guy punched Nassar and hope Nassar gets shived in prison.

MSU is firing their medical dean
https://www.reuters.com/article/gym...l-idUSL2N1PZ1VM

quote:

Feb 9 (Reuters) - Michigan State University is moving to fire a dean who it said had failed to enforce 2014 guidelines created for sports doctor Larry Nassar in treating young athletes after complaints of sexual misconduct against him.

Interim Michigan State University President John Engler said in a memo on Friday he would ask a faculty panel to revoke tenure for Dr. William Strampel, who oversaw the college where Nassar worked but has been on medical leave since December.

...

According to the university memo posted on its website, Strampel did not sufficiently communicate with others or enforce 2014 guidelines put in place for Nassar when performing osteopathic manipulation in sensitive areas. One of those guidelines included having another person present, the Lansing State Journal reported.

Aly Raisman did an interview with CNN

She says that the USOC hasn't reached out to her at all since making her Victim Statement against Larry Nassar.

Also from the interview:

quote:

As a gymnast training at Karolyi Ranch -- the US Women's National Team Training Center in Texas -- Raisman said she and her fellow athletes were afraid to ask for basic needs such as soap and adequate food.

"There was so much of a power dynamic where we never felt like we could speak up or say anything," she said. "We had like powdered eggs in the morning, the food was horrible, the showers smelled like rotten eggs, there were cockroaches on the floor."
Raisman told CNN she and her teammates felt powerless to complain about the conditions.

"I remember there was one time in the gym at the training camp, there was not -- there was no more soap left in the bathrooms and we were all talking amongst ourselves, kind of arguing of who was going to speak up about needing more soap because we were afraid to ask for more soap ... it just shows the power that they had over us."

Now it's USA Swimming's turn in the crosshairs

quote:

In the more than 20 years since Wielgus took charge of USA Swimming in July 1997 at least 252 swim coaches and officials have been arrested, charged by prosecutors, or disciplined by USAS for sexual abuse or misconduct against individuals under 18. Those coaches and officials have a total of at least 590 alleged victims, some of them abused while attending pre-school swim classes.

quote:

USA Swimming since at least 2010 has kept a list of more than 30 coaches and officials “flagged” by USA Swimming officials after being arrested or accused by law enforcement of sex crimes including rape and child pornography, but not disciplined by USA Swimming. Some coaches and officials on the “flagged” list have not been banned even after they have been convicted of felonies. Of the 32 people on the “flagged list” in 2010, only six have been subsequently banned by USA Swimming. The “flagged list” is not available to the public. Even when USA Swimming has banned coaches and officials for life for sexual misconduct it can be years before their names are listed on the permanently banned list on USA Swimming’s website.

quote:

USA Swimming has also paid $77,627 to lobbying firms to lobby against legislation in California that would have made it easier for sexual abuse victims to sue their abusers and the organizations they worked for or represented in civil cases.
