Olothreutes posted:"Uh, Mr. Hidyus, we didn't expect you to be down here today..." the engineer was clearly stalling for words. In the midst of them all was what looked like a supply crate. Empty, or at least it was now. Mirko didn't know if it had been filled with anything previously. It was sitting on the edge of a target platform for the Reality-Shift™ system. At least some of it was, the part that was on the platform at all. The other half of the crate simply wasn't there. The crate just ended at the edge of the platform, a perfectly smooth edge remaining where there should have been more crate to follow, as if it had been sliced cleanly by some giant melon baller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lz1IGYhWNo&t=355s

This time he was going to be digging around the wreck's computer core, seeking out something very specific and important that Virtual Domain Partners wanted salvaged for its own corporate needs. Kal hoped that nothing bad would happen to him here, especially now that the Meth-Maw was good and dead. Still, that rumbling from before had him worried that what he was doing here might be inherently unsafe. What if there were more of those Meth-Maws out there? What if this lake was actually the caldera of a dormant cryovolcano? It was best not to think of these things. [Luxe: 5] Kalpernicus woke up from his nap with a start. He'd been having that recurring nightmare again, the one where things weren't going well for him in the Salt arena. He was stuck in a never-ending loop of being chased down and devoured by the endless sharp jaws of a Squamous Horror, again and again. It was one of those recurring reminders that told Kalpernicus that this was all a game: survival of the fittest. Never stop running, Kalpernicus would tell himself. He wanted to go back to the hologym, but it had been less than five hours since his last visit. He was starting to feel restless. He idly glanced at the status of his Sponsor account and was floored by what he saw. He noticed that 11 Luxe had been He logged in to his Sponsor Account's Challenges and gave it a little update.

Somewhere in the extra-Saturnine region aboard the Pertinax Hecatonchires class vessel Bellerophon, Aethelred was, once more, finding himself wishing the late, lamented Telepsionics Program had resulted in more than just four petaluxe worth of equipment, facility and personnel loss and the complete disappearance of the subplanetoid 4 Vesta. The disappearance was cleverly disguised by a data management intelligence scrubbing records and scouring the extranet for references but the loss led to the closure of the entire Psionic Research Division many years ago. He scrolled and scrolled through the minutes of the meeting he had so angrily dismissed when he smashed the left arm of his command throne, taking extra special note of those research fellows and project leads whose language was less than diplomatic, and wished he could simply reach out with his mind and throttle them. Alas, he would have to settle for less immediately gratifying punishments. Waving the hovering holo-document aside he looked at the data streams and AV feeds from Rime, removing the predictive matrices crafted by the finest Gameologists and Murderologists, and zeroed in once more on Cryo. After a short while it became clear even without Gameologist analysis exactly what was going on, and Aethelred had come to think fondly of his newest charges. That said, pulling up the sponsor interface, he earmarked 13 luxe from Cryo, 5 from Kalpernicus, and 13 from Scramble toward a brand new Squidpack for the enhanced, fortitudinous Wrecker, and pressed the glowing red holographic "DEPLOY" button.

The sing-song notification alert from his Comms tablet told him that an update to his Wrecker map was underway. He brought the regional Wrecker map up on his neural network's visual interfacer and reviewed his immediate options. A faulty delivery drone that had been overloaded with experimental optiscopes had apparently crash landed somewhere close nearby, and Kal could probably make it there first if he hurried... What to do? He could stay here and finish the salvaging of the spaceship while taking long-distance potshots at the Wildcat Fracker from afar, or he could make a quick detour away from this xenoshipwreck for the time being and get something that'll help out him in the long run. It was almost a no-brainer. As if in response, the ground began trembling, rumbling, then quaking yet again. It was time to get out of here - and not for the first time. [Luxe: 10] Kalpernicus took a break from his Rig-Ripper training exercises to look for his Comms Tablet, which must have gone missing around the same time he was apprehended by the Continuity Rangers. He tossed his personal quarters apart in his frantic, feverish searching. Despite his thoroughness, the Comms tablet was nowhere to be found. Kalpernicus missed having something mobile and compact that he could neurally interface with, something that wasn't quite so bulky and restricted as his personal quarters' private console. He hated that he had to watch the games from this limited perspective, unable to join the other sponsors in their lounges. He should either be the one down there on the surface or he should be allowed to bombard the surface with as many missiles and weapons and presents as he wanted! He hated that all he could do was accumulate wealth for the benefit of others watching. He filled out a couple positive feedback forms for local businesses and put his stamp of approval on a couple more quasi-legal sponsorship deals for Kal Risso. That should ensure income to trickle in for another cycle or so. Checking his funds, Kalpernicus noticed that Pertinax had sequestered 5 luxe from his account to secure a Squidpack for the wrecker known as 'Cryo.' Kalpernicus knew just the way to make that money back: more sponsor challenges!

Rook Engineered Organisms Earlier, in a perfectly spherical vacuole-station in interstellar space, Rook-Fork-450KJL labored. Its vast cloned mind had recently been flashed with the latest psycho-engrams of the Board of Directors, those immortal, luscious beings, and it contained within itself both the full resources and knowledge of Rook Engineered Organisms. Under the pearlescent, organic surface, thousands of great cyst-bays widened, filling over the course of hours with construction fluids until the walls were smooth and taut and ceramic, whereupon the contents were drained and oxygenated and cooled, approximating the conditions of Rime. Into each of them, the same group of control clones was generated and flashed with memories. They were given simple commands and may even have believed they were actually performing in Wrecking Crew. Over several dozen further hours, Rook EngOrg's latest creation took shape and underwent almost a cumulative hundred thousand hours of stress testing. Finally, it was, as the mayfly existences of the rest of humanity said, 'good enough'. The Implantation Hive was an ideal means of drastically reshaping the human form, almost certainly into something better. The 'almost certainly' was the sticking point, but then that was the point of Wrecking Crew - simultaneously entertainment and effectively free field testing of equipment. Nobody cared if a few Wreckers died, and if the equipment operated as desired? All the better, but by no means required. RF450KJL collapsed the cyst-bays one by one, drowning the clones even as they dissociated into undifferentiated matter. Soon, the entire vacuole station was once more filled with a glutinous, homogeneous fluid. The mind residing in its core flashed a signal through its twin ansibles, then collapsed itself too, leaving the station dead and waiting. An instant later, near Rime, a small organic satellite printed a copy of the product within its own, vastly smaller bay, ready for deployment. The Hive, a densely packed artificial structure surrounded concentric layers of re-entry resistant ceramic and wax ablators, could be targeted (relatively) precisely to deliver a (relatively) precise dosage of mutagen that would turn even a baseline human into a paragon of genetic artifice. The Board of Directors clapped from their far-off homes and waited for the perfect chance to deploy it. (The Implantation Hive is designed to totally mutate the poo poo out of people. I don't care what the mechanism is, only that the hive lands near people and bees swarm out and dig under their skin to inject mutagen into lymph nods and whatnot. I mentioned in Discord doing something like rolling 1d3 (to choose between Mutation, Upgraded Mutation, and Malpractice charts) and then 1d20 to select which, but I'm cool with whatever. ENjOY)

[STEV ANSAHOK / HP: 4/6 / MOVE: 2 / 2 LUXE / CYBER: RIG JACK, DERMAL ARMOR, HYPERBALLISTIC PLATES /MUTATIONS: AMYGDALIC HYPERCEPHALY, VOX MUTANDIS] It wasn't particularly easy moving around in a thermosuit covered by a hazard suit, but it sure beat stewing in the chemicals around here. Not that Cryo seemed to mind either the cold or the toxicity. It was honestly surreal watching her manage just fine, and almost made him want to take it all off, because clearly it was just fine out. Fortunately, Stev had seen enough Moon Madness in his time to know that that wasn't going to do him any favors. Instead, he kept working at digging a trench in the slush, a foxhole to avoid the coming bombardment. He checked his wrist unit, pondering the challenges that sponsors had posted. Some of these were remarkably convenient... for a time when he wasn't being chased by an Alpha, at least. Everything else was secondary right now. "So, this time the thing's going to disable properly, right? Feels like we've had a real run of bad luck here with that." Action: Taking Cover

[CRYO / HP: 2 / MOVE: 3 / FUEL: 0 / LUXE: 002 / CYBER: SPINAL ANTENNA, EYEGEAR, THREADED VISUALIZER / MUTATIONS: TRAUMATIC SCLERODERMA, EXTREMOPHILE, CHILD OF THE ATOM] Cryo nestled into the slush as Stev furiously dug in his awkward suit, basking in the warm(?) embrace of complex hydrocarbon chains. She could already feel a strangely contented glow spreading through her chest as burned patches of her skin started to rapidly scab over, but there was still the nagging problem of the Behemoth looming ominously in the middle distance. Cryo braced the Stinger on the icy lip of her pool and halfheartedly sent a spear flying. The constant running and sniping wasn't even exciting at this point, just draining. Sting the Behemoth (take four): 1d10 8, do not pull it Wishlist: H̻E̝͟L͠P̥ ̼͖̺͎̱͍͟M̭͚̠̦̱̞E̖͖̙̜̣ ̨̫̬͖̞͚̭̞B̶̦̬̣̳͎̖̿ͦ̔̎̑ͭ̏́E͇̮͔̎̐C̢̬̰͇̥̹̲̭̝̲͊͒͊́̀Ơ̝̥̪̘͙͖̞̠̭ͧ̿̆͝M̫̯̮̺͊ͫ̒̏ͣ̈́͘

Research wing or reactor housing next?." Staying put to keep raiding Sigma. Wishlist:You're a clever bunch of sponsors. surely an IFF transponder is not a step too far?

Turning back slightly "Give a shout when you're heading out, B-J-J." "So you have to show me your nez-bow wearables for- you don't wear any? Oh we need to change that, it's like, such an easy accessory to add but it adds so much, like if you turn it this way..." [Frau Freiheit / HP:1 / MOVE: 3 / FUEL: 0 / LUXE: 11 / CYBER: Quadlegs] Not Alex posted:The two wreckers' footsteps echo in the darkened facility. Scramble looks around dubiously. "So are you getting the same ancient-robot-guardians-spring-to-life-the-moment-we-press-the-wrong-button vibe that I'm getting? It's that or some critter that's scary enough to keeps the scavs out and neat enough to pile its bones elsewhere. This place is way too clean for Rime." Urgh, yeah, this is like some bad horror movie. Getting inside is all easy and nice, but as soon as we grab something you just know that some giant baddie will jump out of some dark, foreboding corner and start chasing us. Frau griped as she checked every corner and closet. What do you think we should grab first? My instincts would be to grab the Luxe and the Research Database now and the Schematics and the Sample if we get lucky and either kill whatever baddie turns up or remain undisturbed.

[BOBBY-JACK JOHNSON / HP: 2/2 / MOVE: 3 / LUXE: 7 / CYBER: Trauma Webbing / MUTATION: Biolytic Eruption] Well, that could have gone far worse. He didn't get shot on sight, for one, and he could replenish his medical supplies somewhere relatively warm, for once. He gave Lucinda a silent nod of affirmation as the girl went off with the locals. A few moments of peace and quiet too. The camp was turning up to be a place Bobby-Jack found relatively enjoyable rather briskly indeed. LUCINDA can peek Bobby-Jack also takes Cover from possible manhunters by going inside and having a nice cup of ScavCoffee.
