"MyEtherWallet" is one of the preferred free wallets that I've pretty much seen everyone in crypto chats refer people to use.

WARNINGA Warning About MEW/MyCrypto (self.CryptoCurrency)

submitted 43 minutes ago by AdamSC1Mod /r/CryptoCurrency & /r/EthTrader[M] - announcement

Yesterday, the crypto community noticed announcements about MyEtherWallet supposedly changing their name to "MyCrypto" based on posts on Twitter.

There have been no other announcements through other official MyEtherWallet channels, and the MyEtherWallet Twitter has now made a post suggesting that their Twitter handle was compromised and changed without their knowledge.

It is unclear at this time whether MyCrypto is an official project of the MEW team or not.

It is also unclear at this time if MyEtherWallet, or other social channels have been compromised.

While there is currently no other signs of a hack - we're advising the community to try and avoid MyEtherWallet and MyCrypto until this situation can be resolved.

Always remember that entering your private key on a malicious website can compromise your wallet.

What should I do if I used MEW recently?

You're probably fine. Once again, there is no clear indication of a hack at this time.

However, it may be worth while generating a new wallet and transferring assets to that new wallet via another service such as MetaMask.

What can I use instead of MEW?

If you are uncomfortable using a local wallet such as GETH or Parity, then you can consider using the MetaMask addon.

When will we know that MEW is safe to use?

It's unclear at this time, we're still trying to find official updates. The moderator team will do our best to update you when we have more news.

Stay safe!

@here An important warning about MyEtherWallet/MyCrypto

https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/7wdj0t/a_warning_about_mewmycrypto/

At this time it looks like this may be a hostile take over from employees in the company splitting off into their own brand, but, we have been unable to fully confirm that information at this time. Users should proceed with caution and try and avoid using both sites until there is more clarity provided on this.

Please proceed with caution.

Sounds like it's behind the scenes drama over who gets to be the boss, but currently one of the main "safe" storage options proves once again that it could possibly disappear for no reason out of the blue. People are really hoping that no hacking actually took place.

Also, it’s not the first to do this. The Byzantine generals problem has many solutions if you remove or even just slightly weaken ANY of the requirements.

This nicely reflects that Bitcoin only solves agreement in an unreliable system a very particular case, but also is just one solution among many. A solution with so many drawbacks it probably (definitely) make sense to carefully consider your requirements because there just may be (definitely is) a better solution out there.

I posted about this one earlier. It was one of the most hyped coins next to Ripple and it shot up from a fraction of a penny to $35 because it only existed on a lovely, shady exchange with no trade volume so everyone ran there to buy it up before it was later added to the more "reputable" exchanges. Once it was added to more exchanges it crashed by 70%

I actually tried to compile some XRB/Nano meltdowns but they all think this is good for bitcoins and are rushing to buy more of it because it was the exchanges fault and not the coin and nobody cares about a top exchange stealing $170,000,000 if it wasn't taken directly from them.

I did find this

AMAI lost 147k Nano ($1.4 M, and falling) in the Bitgrail hack, AMA (self.CryptoCurrency)

submitted 2 hours ago * by Breakline7

Title explains it. Before Kucoin was added as an exchange, I played around day trading on bitgrail to see if I could gain some more Nano. Turned out to be (probably) one of the worst decisions of my life. I've decided that the only way to deal with this is to move on as quickly as possible and keep making solid decisions. Negative emotions in times like these serve no one. I will continue to invest in cryptocurrency to the degree that I believe it has potential, and if it does, the worst decision I can make right now is stopping. I will be much, much more careful with exchanges in the future.

Bitgrail's statement on the hack can be found, here: https://bitgrail.com/news

I've been trying to withdraw for a month, but their 10 BTC/day limit screwed me. I was verified quite early and had to pull out small amounts at a time for a very long time. Eventually, their 10 BTC/day limit tended toward something like 1 BTC, and my support tickets weren't answered.

Couple of comments for "proof",
