 Who the hell are The Cardiacs and why should I care? Cardiacs (no "the") are one of the most important bands you've never heard of, my own deep admiration of the band aside, I don't feel that's an over-statement. If you'd describe yourself as a fan of Blur, Napalm Death, Faith No More, Mike Patton, Tool or Radiohead (who would open for them on at least one occasion), you've been touched, second hand, by the genius of Cardiacs' Tim Smith, who's been cited as an influence by all these bands. Cardiacs fierce musical independence made them extremely label unfriendly in an era where your label was everything, and most of their work ended up being put out through their own label, The Alphabet Business Concern. Despite this, they've got a fiercely loyal fanbase. That list of bands tells me absolutely nothing about what Cardiacs sound like Yes, true, that's a rather diverse set of bands. By the time Cardiacs got going, progressive rock was just about the least cool thing you could do, the irreverence and unpretentiousness of punk and post-punk were the fashions of the time, but Cardiacs extensive use of odd-time, modes of limited transposition and Tim Smiths' general compositional genius meant they could never shake the prog label, despite sounding rather punky. In fact, in one scathing review of A Little Man and A House and The Whole World Window, Jack O'Neill said New Musical Express posted:Just when you thought Marillion had taken us to the very limit along comes this schizo-progressive anachronism wherein the Cardiacs have telescoped the entire dreggs of the early seventies into one album so geriatric, by comparison that the next Blue Öyster Cult will sound as fresh as Viva Hate. It is the Floyd, it is Genesis, it is King Crimson, does it matter? The funny thing is, I don't even really disagree, Whole World Window is absurdly proggy, but its sound is so unfamiliar to prog. The guitars are heavily overdriven, the vocals are decidedly punky, in parts becoming Cure-esque. Tim Smith insisted Cardiacs were a pop band, and some how that's not entirely at odds with their progressive punk (pronk (ugh)) sound. Cardiacs are fun, they're groovy, they're positively enjoyable in a popish way. I will suffer through one Cardiacs song Grand! But there's a little more to this story. In 2008, Tim Smith suffered a cardiac arrest while leaving a My Bloody Valentine concert. This left him with anoxic brain damage, limiting his speech, movement and causing constant pain. Currently there's a fundraiser active to fund his care and hopefully rehabilitation. Tim Smith wants to go back to making music. I want Tim Smith to make music, so if you like Cardiacs please go buy an album or something. Agreed, after first listening to Sing to God I had to have it but I'm not shelling out 70$ for an album It's such a good album too. An instant favourite.

Either get it from Cardiacs.net or, unfortunately, the iTunes store. Their distribution is kinda surprisingly poo poo, I've sent an email asking them to get a band camp, I recommend other people do the same and maybe they'll capitulate. I know Sing To God is just expensive because it's a double album.
