LinkedIn thread seems dead so I'll repost here since this one is alive and well: A Udemy course I did last year recommended keeping your LinkedIn profile as "on brand" as possible. So if you want a job doing X, then you need everything in there to be all about X and just leave out the unrelated stuff. Include tangentially related stuff, though. What do you guys think about this? Because I won't be applying for only one particular job title or niche. Should I include everything, like a European CV, or should I stick to the advice given and keep it "on brand"? Also, do you guys keep a "personal projects" part in your experience category where you place Media screenshots, links, and whatnot? Because normally you have to click that down arrow in order to see the links and screenshots but if you put them in the Experience section then it's right there in your face when you scroll down.

I've basically ignored my LinkedIn profile for years and get recruiters messaging me all the time (even before my current job). Past that it has never seemed relevant, nobody brought up my LinkedIn profile in an interview or anything, even when I interviewed at LinkedIn

If you're entry-level and you don't have anything else, it makes sense to list interesting non-development work you've done. Otherwise, I don't see the point to approaching it like a CV, you'll just confuse or bore the audience. I think the same holds for personal projects, too. If you're experienced and still flogging a CRUD app with a user count in the single digits, it's not really worth being highlighted. If you're highlighting your contributions to a well-known open source library, that's a different situation.

I had a couple of potential avenues to advertising companies in my life. Given my burning, eternal hatred of advertisement in any shape or form I opted to not pursue further as I would have hated myself every day.

At least, that's where my constantly fighting against the world almost led me. But I do like the SkannyD nickname, need to get some bling on my gryphon avatar, maybe a gif where the glasses come down, that would be sick.

Also I've just been in a remarkably poo poo-posty mood for weeks, especially today as I solve a concurrency issue that shouldn't even be happening but, well, people don't like to be told their solution is bad and that yours is better because they think readability < marginal performance increases that aren't that important due to a small, relatively bounded input size. I need to learn to get better at sticking up and defending my ideas. Please get that avatar.

I've been working on a... book? Introduction to programming in text at any rate by meeting up with friends who are not technical and writing exercises by automating their jobs. It's been a lot of fun and I'm hoping it can liberate some people. Be the change etc.

Got an offer from Big Tech Company that’s about a 35% total compensation raise from my current job at Established Startup (discounting startup options because they’re private). Waiting for the result of another interview from last week before negotiating. It feels weird to give notice at a job that I don’t hate yet. I also understand how people at Big Tech Cos are making 300k+ now (overlapping yearly stock grants).

The big names hand them out as a retention package. Why would you leave if in 6 months you’re getting a windfall with another coming in 18?

RSUs (which is likely what brainwrinkle is talking about) vest with whatever vesting schedule the company has. For example you might get a grant of 92 RSUs when you first start that vests over the course of 4 years, so each month 2 RSUs vest and that becomes real shares that you can cash out. You are eligible to get a refresh grant as well, so after your first year you might get another 92 RSUs with the same vesting schedule, now you've got overlapping grants vesting each month.

For example, you might get hired on and they tell you "we'll give you a $200k grant, you get nothing for the first year, then 1 year after hiring, half of it vests, with the remaining half vesting in even increments once a month over the next year". That is, you get 12/24ths at the 1 year anniversary (this is the "cliff"), and the remainder in 1/24th increments once a month until it's all gone. Then after a year, while you're wondering what to do with your $100k worth of stock that just vested, they say "good job, here's another $50k grant, it'll vest over the next year in 1/12th increments". So for that second year, you're getting $150k in grants, in addition to your salary and benefits. Also grant valuation is determined at the time they're given to you, so if the value of the stock goes up, so does the value of the grant. GOOG (the stock symbol for Alphabet) is up 28% in the last year.

Where I’m at now I get something,Ike 40% in bonus and 175% from 2 years of overlap. With another cliff vest soon. Basically means I could t afford to work at a private company anymore unless I was mentally retiring.

Also past a certain point (I think it's generally in the $150k-$200k range), "more cash please" just stops happening. Improvements in your income will come primarily from bigger grants. Of course, you can then sell the grants during the trading window if you like.

Blind is a good place to find that the sky is falling down, a month ago everyone was panicking about them bringing stack-ranking back (they haven't). Anyone who passes their algorithms/DS heavy interviews, really. It's not all AI and Robotics though, for example, I have a friend who does full-stack work in JS/Ruby, and there's even a specialized track called WDE (Web Development Engineer) for those who are focusing on front-end work. Maybe they focus on a certain kind of person at a certain level for certain work, but I think in general they have a wide net.
