I'm almost ready with the brand spankin' new PMs that are totally not a thinly-veiled test of any other system I might be using in the near future and I'll probably lazily send them out over the next few hours

Opening ceremonies begin at ~~5PM~~ 2PM Pacific.

Welcome, Tokyo University students!!

Please make yourselves comfortable as we begin opening ceremonies. You have some very important tasks during your time here at Toudai, so let's not waste any time.

First, I'll have to ask each and every one of you to participate in all school activities. Not participating has an opportunity cost, and the school simply can't weather it this year. Don't go trying to start any idol bands as a result - we don't want a repeat of last year.

Second, due to budget cuts, we're severely understaffed and must rely on volunteers to identify potential troublemakers. We don't want to put too much power in the teacher's hands, of course, so we'll go with a democratic system. If a student is considered a troublemaker by a majority of the student body, that student will join me in detention, where they'll receive the kind of remedial attention and care that they need.

Finally, and most exciting of all, we need a student council president!! Please conduct a civilized election amongst yourselves and have a consensus answer submitted to the faculty lounge by... shall we say Wednesday at 5PM Pacific? Your student council president will be a natural leader among you. Obviously, the president will have to spend a lot of extra time at school and will be very busy - so don't waste any time trying to send her to detention!

Study hard, work hard, make friends with one another; I'll see you all again when it's time for exams. Ganbatte, minna-san!!
