This appeals to me, a jazz-skeptic, because it's got like a beat and stuff.

Opinion: Some jazz is good, but not all of it. Some jazz is not very good at all.

I've been studying this subject for quite some time, and this is my conclusion.

i agree sometimes you think jazz stuff with a flute is going to be stupid but sometimes its good

and sometimes you think that guy with the sax is going to sound really awesome but then its really bad

its confusing at times

Macnult

Jazz is cool, unless it's smooth jazz. Smooth jazz is awful.

Macnult

Be careful who you say "smooth jazz sucks" to. One time I said that to a music major whom agreed with me wholeheartedly and then proceeded to say a mix of various letters and numbers to support my statement, when all I was trying to say is that I don't think it sounds good, or like jazz.

Macnult

Some cool ways to enjoy jazz:

imagine you are playing the instruments

imagine a scene from a movie, or a scenario in which the jazz song you're listening to fits right in

I like to apply the concepts of Jazz to my daily life. If I have to give an impromptu speech, that's "Word Jazz". What's that? I have to make dinner for guests in 20 minutes and only have 4 pieces of food in my fridge? Food Jazz. So many things in my life have gone wrong that I don't even understand which one I'm crying about anymore? Tear Jazz. Jerking off to 4 monitors' worth of porn at once across 7 different sites? Jizz Jazz.

Is there a genre of music that describes something like "rainy day jazz?" I really like very light, quiet, medium tempo jazz to listen to when it's raining outside. I don't think "smooth jazz" is right because that's the overly loud and percussive poo poo greasy meatheads turn on when they're about to gently caress or want to appear sophisticated

I think part of the reason jazz struggles to appeal to a widespread audience is because it can be so abstract that it sounds more like noise than like music. Sometimes it seems like the musicians are just trying things because they can, or because they want to show off how smart they are.

To me, this is all wrong. Jazz, to be done correctly, should sound good in addition to being innovative. If it doesn't sound good, then what's the point? This is really tricky to pull off, but some musicians can do it. Here are my five favorite jazz albums:

Only the Lonely by Frank Sintra (album of all sad songs)

Ella Sings Gershwin by Ella Gitzgerald and Ellis Larkins (the best singer performing the music of the best songwriter/lyricist)

Where Is Love? by Irene Kral and Allen Broadbent (really intimate album of ballads)

After Midnight by Nat Cole (great album of swinging standards)

Getz/Gilberto by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto & Astrud Gilberto & whoever the drummer and bass player are (it's the album with girl from ipanema on it which is really all you need to know)

Here are a few other songs I like:
-Wave by Antonio Jobim
-Aguas de Março by Antonio Jobim and Elis Regina
-The Days of Wine and Roses by Henry Mancini
-Round Midnight by Ella Fitzgerald
-Misty by Sarah Vaughan
-that one live recording of How High the Moon by Ella Fitzgerald
-Stardust by Henry Mancini
-Flor de Lis by Djavan
-Lil' Darling by Count Basie & his orchestra
-Blue Rondo a la Turk by Dave Brubeck

I could keep going forever but I'll stop there

(note that I am listing the performers, not the original authors of these songs)
