i've never gotten into dragon quest, my favorite japanese games are all either by cool inventive industry youths or depressed middle-aged people with weird deeply personal narrative-driven ideas. sometimes a mix of both i do respect dragon quest 1 for being the product of a guy who wanted to make a version of ultima that was comprehensible

I can at the very least recommend DQ5 as a unique spin on JRPG narrative and DQ8 (the PS2 version) as a low-stakes colorful adventure.

maybe the reason shadow hearts 3 wasnt as good is that after keith in sh1 and joachim in sh2 were both pretty gay and extremely gay respectively the female vampire in sh3 wasnt just a raging lesbian. rule of threes motherfuckers

No one is arguing this at all, and never has. It's about context, something dorks like this are not intelligent enough to grasp. A great example of a woman character is Sigrun Engel in Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. She is an overweight woman, but the game doesn't poke fun at her, it doesn't use her weight as a joke or punchline. Instead She parallels many of Blazkowicz's own demons, mostly dealing with abuse from a parent. She is a well written fantastically executed character with a dark storyline, in a video game that is otherwise ridiculously violent and absurd.

Part of the new youtuber/twitter/Twitch landscape where indie devs benefit from an increased sense of accessibility with their audience (as opposed to hiding behind a brand or company) means their personal lives and opinions are open to engagement. All creators nowadays who have chosen to engage with an audience on some platform are aware of this now so yes, expect more Nazis and misogynists to be putting out games because they'll be open about their beliefs. It's part of their personas and they'll be using it for marketing. The flip side is true too: expect chill people to make games too and they'll be using their chill personas to make and sell their games. You get to/have to decide if any of that means anything to you, but it's not going away from the indie and mid-tier space.
