Yes, Edgar Rice Burroughs, I assume Goatman would accidentally mistake the author of Tarzan for the author of Naked Lunch, trying to write the latter when the Great White Savior and Noble Savage themes of the former are way more up Goatman's alley.

Spoilering for those who needed to skip the earlier spoilered section.

The best case scenario is Brucato fantasizes about his underage creation and has been down too long in the hippie sea to realize that the things he is writing about and has been adjacent to are not normal and not okay I don't have a lot of faith in this- some of the implications may be unintended, but not all of them.

The worst case scenario involves dialing the FBI hotline.

I've been doing my best to leave most commentary about what I think of his inclinations and history out of the review itself for reasons of it really not being my place to speculate on a topic like this. I can say, though, that the consensus of every abuse survivor I've shown it to has been a universal reaction of bone-deep revulsion and comments/observations that practically turned my hair white.

This cuts both ways. If you can't fit your core concept into a tweet, that's too much. If you can't even fill half a tweet, your concept needs filling out (and elaborate character build titles for crunchy systems don't count)

I also had the core concept before I started working on that.

And I've had a 4e character who's entire conceit is "I really want to use that anime as hell crescent moon blade Paladin e7 power"

e: I guess I should add that Yes, the spoilered bit of the text is rapey as hell. And is at the very least creating a very romantically sexualized account of the relationship.

See, I had some personal GM fears recently about getting overattached to a NPC. You know the drill, you make a character, like the concept so you flesh them out a little more.. and before you know it you treat the NPC as if it was your character and not something destined to get their brains blown out in the finale.

And now I know, however badly I fare as a GM, at least I've never used my underage, likely abuse victim, foot fetish waifu (that's surrounded by horny 40-year-olds) in a game while screaming at my players: "LOOK AT HER, YOU FUCKERS! ISN'T SHE, LIKE, TOTALLY COOL?!? LOOK AT HER!!"

So at least there's this low I'm not reaching, which is nice.

This. Some people build a concept from an elevator pitch, some people do the RPG equivalent of method acting and have to generate a full backstory to reach at where the character is at the beginning of play. I don't think there is anything wrong with coming up with something that elaborate so long as it can ALSO be collapsed into bullet points.

When I see people come to a table with a longer backstory, it's usually because there are story hooks in there that they want to see come up during play. The issue is that if they are the only person with this expectation and someone's going to be disappointed in how spotlight time is allocated. Generically I don't want to discourage a player telling me what he wants out of the game, but it might mean a little more time during character creation to tease out something equivalent from the other players - or at worst telling the one player that these parts of his background are probably not going to be addressed.

Exploration is ill-advised.
I try to always make character generation a group activity for that reason, so everyone has a chance of being on the same page and knowing the expectations.

One of the biggest mistakes of gaming in the 90s, generally, was an emphasis on lots of backstory coupled with really deadly game mechanics, with the designers openly boasting about both. Yeah, write a 20-page biography of your character that will get torn to shreds in their first combat.

AFAIK, all the famous NPCs from old-school D&D had their backstories retconned in after they survived Gary's game long enough to be memorable.

I neglected to mention that I then lost said character because my Storyteller chose to interpret "Had the fear of breaking the veil literally beaten into him" as something I should grow out of in my second adventure, so he put me into a situation where my two options were "Break the veil" or "die", and I took the In Character option.

Which was just as well because that was the plot arc that turned into Frank Miller's Sin City But Literally Everyone's Fera and my character would have been decidedly out of place.

What's more, if you're talking about a game like Shadowrun, there's a lot of fiddly little bits you can spend hours manipulating but your power level comes down to which character class you picked.

Honestly, more game designers need to understand the character creation:character life expectancy ratio - it's disheartening to put a lot of time and effort into making a character and have them get killed in one session, especially if it's due to circumstances beyond your control.

Doesn't the process of switching bodies take like at least eight individual rolls to resolve?

And if you gently caress up some of them you'll get penalties and you have to deal with more ongoing poo poo to get them to go away.

Second edition of Eclipse Phase fixed a lot of first editions flaws, fewer skills, easier character gen, bodies that don't require you to remake your sheet to use. It is in a free play test right now.

If it’s spacefights with elves it’s really not worth coming up with piles of gear for no benefit. Only add that granularity if everything else has it.

Nah, Brave New World never got much traction due to its relatively limited character generation compared to its contemporaries (i.e. Champions and its descendants). There's a reason the game line never finished; it's basically the forgotten game as far as Pinnacle games go. It has fans, but far as I've seen when most people talk about liking it, it feels like they enjoyed the narrative or setting more than the actual game itself.
