I got a call 17 SE from Charles Maund for under 27k out the door. The guy I bought it from is gone but hit up Ancira in SA via email and ask them what deal they can do. Hewlett and Charles Maund will play ball better if you give them an offer to beat from a local dealer.

just get an accessport and an etune. or if you are feeling especially spicy a custom tune, but you'll notice a difference with just that and a drop in filter and thats easy enough to undo in case of a dealer trip.

Seconding the AP, it’s amazing. The OTS tunes are (understandably) still somewhat conservative, but like night and day. As the other poster said, once your warranty is out you can also get a custom tune will liven it up even more

The AP even improved my gas mileage when I was driving sane. Having the ability to monitor like 100 different real time system goings-on is nice too

Got me an OBDeleven for the GTI, opted for Pro though I don't really need it, I can't even recall what I wanted it for after watching that shopdap video about the differences. I'm not exactly thrilled that it doesn't include any credits even with pro, but it does have a free credit every day if you launch their app, so that's sort of like a free to play game. I'd be more disappointed about 0 credits but I only need like 20 credits for mirror dip and keyfob window control, mybe soundaktor delete for another 10.

If I’m not mistaken there is a counter of how many engine starts since last ECU reset or something like that which they can use to tell if an ECU has been reflashed recently though?

What is so difficult about OBDeleven? I did everything I wanted to on a lovely rear end $20 Andriod phone that I had left over from my Perk farming days.
So that is $80 (or $100 if you don't have an Android) vs $200 to do the same thing.

If they discover a tune was present during any sort of engine failure, you're most likely not going to have a valid warranty claim. Its happened to two friends of mine with their Subarus (ring lands), and lots of people I've seen on the F150 forums with ecoboost engines. From what I've seen, its usually not the dealers themselves that look much into it unless they are specifically requested to by the manufacturer. In the case of one of the Subarus, they actually sent a manufacturer representative to investigate and deny the warranty. This is even AFTER resetting the vehicle to stock, a battery reset isn't going to do a drat thing. The ECU (at least on Fords) keeps a flash count and a tech can go in and see if fuel/spark tables were messed with recently. You're not going to win a fight with a manufacturer if they deny your claim.

Check out the video Deutsche Auto Parts put on youtube explaining the features of the pro and why you might want it. Like I mentioned I can't recall but it's <$60 for non-pro and $80 for Pro. I just watched it right quick and it seems the Pro allows for more live info and long coding. Basic should be able to do the things you're describing, but you'll need to buy or "earn" some credits.

i wasnt submitting that would work in the event of an actual engine failure warranty claim, I was suggesting it if you happened to be taking the vehicle to the dealership just for service. You run 30 pounds of boost into it and blow your engine lol yeah they aint paying for poo poo. on the other hand if you just take it in for a standard service and are worried about the dealership messing with you would be the circumstance i was suggesting it for.

Exactly, if a drivetrain component fails in a way consistent with a bad tune or "abuse" and you've ever had a tune on the car you can expect your warranty claim to be denied, as is entirely reasonable.

If you have a failure that's not consistent with a tune, that depends largely on the dealer and sometimes your relationship with them.

Here's some of the actual Ford guidelines: https://ford.oemdtc.com/GSB/G0000128.pdf

It's a safe bet that most other OEMs have similar policies, as these are consistent with the requirements of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

At least the ST Fords do not have a flash counter. They have a key-cycles-since-last-reset counter which gets reset when you flash it. If that counter is unusually low it's a strong hint that the car has been flashed recently and that the technician should look more closely for signs of modification.

Christobevii3 posted:

This is really popular with some brands (Hyundai and Kia for example) and pretty much unheard of with others (modern VAG and EcoBoost Ford). I assume the vehicles this isn't commonly done on are either hard to get spare ECUs for or have some sort of hardware marriage preventing easy swapping of components.

Do not under any circumstances leave it plugged in all the time.

1, unless Ford changed the electrical wiring, the OBD port supplies power even when the car is off, so your battery will drain

2, no good reason to keep it plugged in, since you change tunes rarely

3, your ST, being an ST will be a target for theft for people who know cars and target "nicer" vehicles

4, if your AP gets stolen, you’ll need to buy a new one and go through Cobb to get a stock image for your car; said stock image will let your car run, but it won’t be an exact match for your original ECU image; Ford would have grounds to deny your warranty for anything potentially related to the ECU flash

I really wish I could find the detailed post of a tech that works at VW and how they handle their flagging / warranty claims. IIRC, if they have to submit for warranty work (ie blown turbo) they get your car hooked up on VWs server scanner (ODIS) which flags your car in their system if it detects it has been modified through whatever algorithm it uses. The dealership can choose to do the repair but VW ultimately ends up deciding if they are going to pay for it or not. So if they decide that your tune was the result of the blown turbo, then they go no money and the dealership loses out and the tech that does the work literally gets paid nothing for the work hes done.

Then again I could be remembering it all wrong. Wish I could find the post over on golfmk7 again.

Unless the FoST AP is that much different, one of the last few updates included a feature to automatically turn off the AP when the car was turned off (on the FiST AP).

The theft issue is a worry if you live or park somewhere that could be an issue

Also on the pros of leaving it plugged in, I went through 2 cables because hooking it up and unhooking it caused the plastic pieces you squeeze to disconnect it to break off. I could still use it, but sometimes I had to use something to push in the sides to unplug it .

It’s all up to how much and how you use your AP , and also the where you leave it unattended.

Keep in mind that the warranty on the FRPP/Mountune tunes is not equivalent to the OEM powertrain warranty. It only covers to 3y/36k, not 6y/60k.

https://performanceparts.ford.com/warranty/include/pdf/Select_Parts_Warranty_Statement_2017v2.pdf

Monkey Fracas noting that it's still under drivetrain warranty implies that it might already be out of that range.

If there was a way to unlock the AccessPort it uses after the warranty runs out and switch over to whatever random tunes you want it'd still be a decent idea later in to the warranty period, but as-is where it's twice the price for a half-rear end warranty I can't recommend anyone buy those unless their car is pretty much brand new. The value you're getting from the significant extra cost dwindles to zero as your mileage approaches 36,000.

As far as OBD-2 and power goes, my bluetooth dongle definitely does not shut off. I had to buy a trickle charger because I work from home so if I didn't go anywhere for 3-4 days in the winter I might not be able to start my car between that and the radar detector (plugged in to the non-switched front power port).

Gotcha, yeah you're right they're not going to just go in and void your warranty because you got a tire rotation and have a tuner, but I believe they can flag your vehicle or leave notes (if the tech is a dick). I always reflash mine to stock mainly so they don't update the PCM and I get locked out of my tuner.
