Any team with a player similar to Karlsson is gonna mean that player likely has a NTC and almost certainly no desire to go to Ottawa. And Karlsson is almost certainly better than anyone they'd move him for anyways. This year not withstanding he's normally a contender for best player in the league. Jones for Johansen? Jones isn't Karlsson level but is proving to be a really good defenseman in his own right

I'm pretty fond of the idea I saw forwarded somewhere on twitter that a team could look into trading for Karlsson for this year's playoffs and then move him again this summer. In theory, this makes the trade doable for teams that don't have realistic long-term cap space for an extension, and might recoup a lot of the immediate cost in picks/players/prospects that getting EK now would take. Granted, the modified NTC complicates this plan a lot but you'd think Karlsson might be pretty happy to play for a contender in the short term and then look to land somewhere nice for a long-term extension, perhaps in a sign-and-trade type scenario.

They would have to be willing to hold onto him long-term though because the odds that a blockbuster trade like EK would happen twice seems far from certain. Given how risk-averse this league is, I have a hard time seeing it.

I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that demand for EK will stay pretty strong through the 2019 trade deadline if he hasn't signed an extension. I think the scenario is pretty plausible.

Whatever move for the Leafs. I guess I'm mildly surprised they got a 4th and not a 6th, which I think is a non-trivial difference in value but I forget pick values. Soshnikov had disappeared down the hole of the Leafs' endless winger depth, so he had to go and the Leafs wanted to clear a 50-man spot anyway.

Late 4th round pick is whatever. Don't know what they're gonna do with Soshnikov, though.

I still think Soshnikov got the raw deal in Toronto. Him, Kapanen, and Leivo should have all been on the team instead of Komarov, Bozak, and Martin.

I'll miss Soshnikov, but yeah he wasn't really going to crack the lineup even with the dead weight on the 4th line. Shame a 4th rounder was all that was gotten for him, though turning an undrafted RFA into a mid round pick isn't that upsetting either.

That would have required Nylander playing center to replace Bozak. Andreas Johnsson has been tearing up the AHL so I'm not worried about Soshnikov - he didn't seem to have much upside anyway. I feel bad for Leivo but he's not a great skster so I doubt he'll get much of a chance elsewhere either.

Jordan7hm posted:Dido was the waiver pickup where Ottawa and Tampa claimed each other’s players. Pokka was what the Hawks got in return for Nick Leddy (who they dealt because of cap issues) in 2014. He never dressed a game for the Blackhawks, not even this year, when they've called up a bunch of players to try and fix a leaky defense. So yea Pokka is probably really bad. And uh, needless to say that the Leddy trade was not one of Bowman's finest hours.
