Small Business Server It's like Like Go look at the features it allows and with what kind of concurrency. Then realize that most 10-40 person shitbird operations expects to run one of those and that's it for their infrastructure

One of the more popular setups for SBS was lovely Tower OEM Server with two USB 2.0 hubs attached, each full of lovely Buffalo storage devices. People were furious when volume extension across multiple drives no longer was allowed as of... 2012r2 or something.

Take any AD/Windows Server/Exchange/Sharepoint performance or security guideline you know of. Do the exact opposite. Eventually, you'll have an SBS up and running. Collocate domain controllers with Exchange, stick a sharepoint farm in there, make sure it will run on any hardware post- 80386 and last but not least do everything via wizards. No need to let those pesky administrators have shell access (disclaimer: it has been a while since I last saw an SBS server so disregard this if any of the above has been fixed) (I'm pretty sure none of the above has been improved on though  )

dont ever presume also that you can do things the way you are supposed to in proper winserver either. if you dont use the fun little SBS wizards for everything it can and will bork up everything.

re: SBS Officially Active Directory, DHCP, and a few other roles require that write caching be disabled. Officially Exchange requires that write caching is enabled. SBS puts all this together on one box, and throws in SQL Server because why the hell not. And of course as noted basically every SBS installation is on the cheapest Optiplex-rebadged-as-a-Poweredge Dell sold at the time.

E: or the time you inherited a network from that one dude that went from SBS to Server standard but didnt build a clean domain and just joined the new DC to the network and decommed the SBS server, leaving your AD configuration permafucked for its lifespan. The company i've joined doesn't have an SBS box. It has a HP ProLiant. It's running hyper V, DHCP (not configured when i arrived, the router was doing that), DNS, print server, file services and AD services. When I saw it I just kind of nodded and went "ok".

I'm really better with the administrative part of running an IT department rather than being the actual IT department) in growing the tech that I was able to move them past it.

Plus you get all the remote access and reporting poo poo too if you have a need for a lot of remote helpdesk or compliance. Also personally I feel its a lot easier to roll out, configure, and manage than most other rmms and it has a better success rate in actually working vs other products ive had to administrate. E: SCCM for me at several clients saves them from having to double or in some cases triple the number of support hours they would need for us to manage their networks without it. @ $30/pc/yr its p. reasonably priced too. We are licensed for SCCM, I've tried to set it up and I can't work it out, managed to get the client deployed to one device and can't work out why it doesn't work when I do the same steps on another device. Going to have another look at PDQ because "too enterprise for me" seems to apply to me too. I really hoped SCCM would help me tame Windows 10 too.

We hired a consultant to setup our SCCM environment. I'd rather pay the guy who's done it 30+ times than spend the days or weeks figuring it out myself.
