Yes that is what's keeping the yankees from trading ellsbury, not the fact that he sucks and is paid a lot of money.

It is, because they were willing to eat most of the contract and he was actually decent at the end of the last year. He could start for a number of teams. He's just been refusing to waive his NTC.

The Yankees did go after Yu Darvish, he just wasn't interested.

Waiving Ellsbury seems like a bad move to me. With Frazier gone there's no obvious 5th OFer ahead of Ellsbury. Last season Hicks seemed to move ahead of him in the playing time order. And Judge and Stanton are probably going to see time at DH and we still don't know how that rotation will work. Gardner's up in years. Hicks has had injury problems and isn't really "established" in my mind. And there's always injuries. So there's a place on the team for Ellsbury, I think. At least for now. Cutting him for a huge financial cost and no return doesn't seem necessary to me at this point.

Either way that doesn't seem like the Yankees being "cheap."

Clint Frazier is still with the Yankees.

EDIT: Also the Yankees still have good OF depth even past him, we're talking about 5th+ OF here. That said, waiving Ellsbury doesn't solve anything, it doesn't clear his payroll.

I don't know why I brain farted on that. I think I had him factored out with the Gerritt Cole rumors and I guess I just never factored him back in.

Ok, so there's a competition at the 5th OFer spot. But with the open DH spot and injury concerns I'm still comfortable with Ellsbury on the opening day roster. If Spring Training plays out that way.

Yeah, if the option is waiving Ellsbury or having him buried on the depth chart, I'll take buried. The end result is the same if we're talking about FA signings.

Drury is a nice addition if only because you turned a blocked prospect into a guy who can contribute right away. Drury can play second or third and provide league average offense. Toe better keep his eyes peeled however, but he'll be safe since he's the only other shortstop on the roster, unless Tyler Wade balls out this spring

Apparently Widener is going to AZ, too. So Yankees definitely dealing from depth here for an immediate need. I figured Walker was gonna be the stopgap.

The Yankees have had success getting middle infielders from the d backs and having them explode so I'm happy with this trade. Solak and widener weren't close or necessary.

Not at that salary. If Ellsbury was available for 4m a year, someone would take him. There's only a handful of teams like the Giants or DBacks he'd waive it for though.

I'd much rather eat all of Ellsbury but 4m than attach something valuable to him, to save more money.

mcmagic posted:

Probably Toe once Torres is promoted, I think the FA still loves Wade.

This is what I'd want to see:

Sanchez
Romine

Bird
Didi
Wade
Andujar
Drury
Austin
Toe/Torres

Ellsbury
Hicks
Stanton
Judge

I'm afraid the coaching staff keeps Toe instead of Wade because of stupid reasons, or even worse have another bullpen pitcher instead. He's exactly the kind of player that coaching staffs irrationally love, the hot streak last year may end up being bad for us in the long run if he keeps sticking around.

I personally like Austin and would like another RH bat, although could see him getting dumped for Toe (prob the most likely) or another bullpen arm.

Wade just didn't hit AT ALL last year. If anything he seems like a guy you'd want hitting every day in AAA. Obviously if Torres isn't the starting 2B he will be in AAA too but they really need to give him and Andujar every chance to win those jobs.

They are clearly loving with Torres' service time, so at this point I would not expect to see him until september call ups unless he like, explodes in the minors or something.

He only needs to spend 16 days in the minors to get another year of control. He’ll be up well before September.

Torreyes makes a lot of contact, his skillset is useful on this team unless Wade really steps up this spring.

I think they'll hope for that situation, but keeping Toe as the bench player and Wade going to AAA isn't a worst case scenario for me.

IDK that that is clear at all. I don't remember the Yankees doing much of service time fuckery in the past and every report out of camp is that he's going to start the exhibition season at 2B and that that job is his to lose.

Carlosologist

Revelry in the Dark

From a financial perspective, the Yankees would be dumb to not hold down Gleyber for two weeks to gain that extra year of service time. Effectively getting seven seasons of cost controlled elite talent is a no brainer. I’m sure the team will give him every chance to lose the job but I wouldn’t be surprised if Drury is the starting 2B on Opening Day

Gleyber is gonna be rookie of the year though

I'm fine with Drury having "the leg up" for one of the spots. It makes sense to pencil the vet into one spot and let the rookies go for the other spot. As long as the door is open for the rookies to take both if they do well and Drury struggles.

He was a little lucky on balls in play, and was completely empty calories batting average. Wade is a solid prospect who profiles as a regular on a second division club, or a super sub with a good team. If they don't screw it up he'll be a valuable piece for years to come, if they do then he'll be a five year starter for the Pirates/Royals/Marlins/etc...

I wouldn't pay too much attention to FO comments right now on Andujar. See how he is in camp. Although I'm a bit of a skeptic both because of his free swinging, and wanting Machado badly in a year.

I would love for Wade to win the job over Torreyes, even if it's not on opening day, but I'm not in a hurry to get Toe off the roster. An empty .292 avg is still .292. We're talking about an 8 or 9 hitter here.
