It's really weird, if you watch stuff on the CW app you get a lot of ads for CW Seed shows. I was messing around on their website today and saw that all these shows they advertise have like 5 episodes and they're like 5-6 minutes long each. Seems like a lot of effort putting these ads together for not a lot of content.

What's really funny is half the (very minimal) ad breaks on the Syfy Now app are just advertising the channel itself with NO shows even mentioned. I guess this is what they call "branding."

As a side note Channel Zero has been completely without ads on Syfy Now so far this season.

Syfy has been kind of weird about ads recently. Happy! had every episode run with limited commercial breaks and a similar thing happened with Blood Drive last year.

Grand Prix Driver, the McLaren docu-series on Prime was pretty decent. I wonder if they originally started out planning to follow the team for the full season until they realized just how much of a poo poo show it was going to be. I'm annoyed at the SyFy app because i was binging Van Helsing S2 and then the episodes disappeared even though I hadn't noticed any expiration warnings.

Yeah, CW Seed is weird and I don't quite get why it exists and that stuff isn't just on the CW App. My thinking is that since the CW App is connected to cable subscriptions the Seed app is supposed to be the cable free thing that draws you in? But I dont think you actually need to log in to watch CW shows? So I don't get it.

I imagine a part of it must be that internet advertising is so far in the toilet that nobody is really interesting in buying ads, so they have to fill the ad breaks with their own stuff.

I thought it had promise at first and seemed really cool, but the plot wasn't very interesting as it went along and moved at a slower pace than Spider-Man newspaper comics, and I loving hated the season finale so I don't really care if I see more of it or not.

Oh, but you see the 2017 Honda motor was newly designed from the ground up!

I've never been a huge McLaren fan, but Alonso driving for them has made me pull for them a little more than usual and his complete honesty about the motor was really refreshing. The series pretty much ends with the preseason Barcelona test but they do give a little bit of lip service to the rest of the season. I wish they had given more credit to the McLaren engineers though for designing what seemed like a pretty kick rear end car last year.

HBO remastered the whole series in 16:9 1080p in 2014. Amazon and HBO both have the remastered versions.

I checked out that Final Space pilot and I have mixed feelings. It's interesting but I don't care about the characters as much as I should. Many things in the pilot are done okayish but not super well. Some characters were half-introduced and didn't have enough subtext to care about them. Jokes were hit and miss although I found Gary more charming than most.

I'm going to keep watching because I love goofy space stuff and I the plot is engaging, if cliched.

Yeah, I enjoyed it and it has potential. I do think the editing was a bit off which screwed with character intros a bit. The voice cast is strong though so if everyone is chewing the scenery it should be worth watching for that alone.

I'm usually really good at picking up VAs, but I cannot hear David Tennent in Lord Commander at all.

That's uh, ambitious.

Well, this will be a disaster. I doubt Amazon has the budget to do it justice, and Consider Phlebas is the wrong one to start with, even though it was written first. There's also going to be a temptation to give the series an overarching plot.
also if they somehow get to Use of Weapons....well. HMMMM.
I just don't see how this could be sustainable. The Culture novels are about on the same level of popularity as Altered Carbon, but far more cerebral (and socialist-edged as opposed to fairly standard cyberpunk with an Eat the Rich undercurrent but no teeth to it). Well, Consider Phlebas is a slambang space opera actioner, so I guess if they nail it, it could create enough of an audience to justify doing The Player of Games. And then the series gets cancelled after Use of Weapons alienates 90% of the audience, while the critics anoint it one of the best things ever.
Only way this will work is if they get Alex Garland (writer of Dredd, director of Ex Machina and the upcoming Annihilation).

Or, it could just be a lose adaptation, picking and choosing themes and settings rather than an outright retelling of the books.

That's precisely what they've been doing with "The Man in the High Castle" and it's working pretty well. The book has very little resemblance to the TV show outside of the initial setup.

Amazon literally didn't pay a single cent in federal income taxes last year and got a $789 windfall from the tax welfarereform law. It has the "budget" to do anything it wants.
