This would be a surprisingly good contract, he'd definitely get more than 5 mil in fa. A lot of his success is certainly due to JT but he also has done a lot of work on his own this year.

Assuming that his breakout this year isn't solely because of it being a contract year and he's actually started putting his game together :sweatdrop:

At this point it’s not even guaranteed he’ll repeat this success next season, let alone for 5-6 years. These are the sneaky bad contracts where teams commit too much money to guys who aren’t *bad* but will probably be replaceable by much cheaper options within like, 2 years, and then you have Frans Nielsen Josh Bailey centering your third line for $5 million. That might be cheaper than what he’d get on the open market right now but it’s very likely to be an overpayment for over half of the contract length.

Or maybe Bailey is legit good, I guess, but it seems risky (unless this is also the price of keeping JT).

Well I certainly don't see him repeating as a PPG+ player again, but at the same time, he put up 56 points last year while moving to Tavares' line about halfway through the year IIRC. If he settles in at that 55-60 point range for a majority of the contract then $5 mil is pretty good value for that, no?

I had some fears that Bailey would be a guy who would be getting something like $6.5 per off of this career year and I certainly don't think he's that valuable. But I'd be willing to take the risk on him holding steady at 55+ points for a few years at $5 mil per, especially if it helps keep JT like you mentioned.

When the hawks were good and dominant after 2013 it turned Ray Emery, Antti Raanta, and Scott Darling into starters, the later two played their way into positions on other teams because the team kept winning while Crawford was hurt. It created a meme in Chicago that Crawford's 6x6 contract was something we could dump because cap hell. This season has proved how instrumental he was to Chicago's success because you'll notice they've gone from bubble team in the central meat-grinder to fallin' for Dahlin since he stopped playing.

Dang it. Alright, Crawford is the best. That the Hawks have had since Belfour.

I'm sure the Isles looked back on losing Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo to multi-year mega deals and thought that this has to stop.

Of course I'm also sure that hfboards fans are saying that this is meant to keep Tavares happy so it will be even funnier when he signs with the Leafs.

the THRILL
Step 1: Trade young, good Zibanejad for older, declining but also good Brassard

Step 2: One year later, aggressively shop Brassard despite having no other internal options for 2nd line centre.

I have no idea what this team is doing other than desperately flailing around trying to cut salary to save Melnyk money. They trade away their first rounder to go all in on Duchene, and then immediately turned around and started selling assets to try to tank.

Unless the Sens are picking top 3 this year, the best strategy would appear to be to just let Colorado take their 1st this year, because next year’s is almost definitely going to be worse. And if they’re doing this, they may as well go all-in and cut ties with Duchene, Stone, and Hoffman as well. A full-out tank and cap-floor spending would definitely save Melnyk some money.

e: I’m starting to get that feeling of hopelessness that I’m guessing Leafs fans had in the Poulin era. There’s basically no chance of this team being good or entertaining until Melnyk is gone.
