Though the Idolacalypse happened, the idolw@tch will live on as we look to the past and the future! The new hotness this season: quote:A group of aspiring idols gather at Takanashi Productions and are entrusted with the company's future. The seven men who have just met represent a variety of totally different personalities. However, they each have their own charm and possess unknown potential as idols. Forming a group, they take their first step together as "IDOLiSH7." Their brilliantly shining dancing forms onstage eventually begin captivating the hearts of the people. What we're checking out from the past: quote:At the start of the 21st century, an interplanetary war broke out. Earth's ecosystem was damaged, and humanity was forced to flee the planet. In this new society, things that "disturb the heart" like music and art are forbidden. 48 years later, a legendary idol group is resurrected as AKB0048. Labeled as terrorists, they must take up arms to defend their careers and their fans. Before there was Macross Delta, there was AKB0048 as Shoji Kawamori starts delving into combat idols who also pilot giant robots. I haven't seen this either, but hopefully it'll be cool and good. And finally I've mentioned Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live before in the past, and I still think it's a really drat good underrated show. A brief history: Pretty Rhythm is basically Aikatsu's main rhythm game competitor in the arcades. So if you've seen anything from Aikatsu, you'll be in familiar territory with how Lives are performed and how they all have various power ups and dresses. Pretty Rhythm is magical ice skating, with Rainbow Live having the gimmick of being able to summon magical instruments. Anyways, Rainbow Live is the 3rd show in the Pretty Rhythm series, but it's disconnected from the first two taking place in its own little universe, so it's a very good entry point. Pretty Rhythm got replaced by PriPara after Rainbow Live, though Rainbow Live eventually got spinoff movies focusing on its boys, till now anyways since there was just an announcement about a new Pretty Rhythm series in the works. Anyways, Rainbow Live is a drat good show where you start off thinking everyone is shallow, and then the show digs deeper and you learn everyone is good, all the girls and the boys (except the villain, he's a piece of poo poo). Also this is the OP that got me into the series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5vaAukA42k Rainbow Live has really good songs throughout. All this on Saturday at our usual time of 1 pm pst/4 pm est/9 pm utc at https://cytu.be/r/kotori Also I occasionally sneak in an episode of something early like whatever episode of Aistars I'm on before the actual stream in case anyone feels like hanging around early. Idolish7 is off to a pretty solid start, we'll see how that goes. 0048, otoh, is fantastic. Ridiculous in all the right ways. Really looking forward to more of that. PRRL also seems pretty good. It's like a 2:1 mix of aikatsu and precure, and heck, I like both of these things. I'm excited, for idols.

I was convinced to watch Love Live through arguments from Endorph and probably Zep, and playing the rhythm game, and then the idol persona just stuck. Got into Cinderella Girls when Sylphid and GB were doing their stream of it

I finally finished the first season of Aikatsu Stars! So did Allarion (and the bastard beat me by like 15 minutes )! It's never been a formal part of our idolwatch, but it aired throughout 2017 (and it continues!), so I'mma ramble about it here. Also I'd probably talk about it here either way. I really liked it! I liked the first season of OG Aikatsu quite a bit too (though I fell off some episodes into the second), but I think I like Aistars more. The rivalry/friendship between Yume and Laura (Rola?) really drives the whole show, and they have great chemistry. I was a bit worried that Yume's childhood friend Koharu would be put in the same role as OGkatsu's Aoi, since she was a bit bland for it, but once Laura was introduced it became apparent pretty quickly that she was the second MC. Our other main girls, Mahiru and Ako, are also pretty great, especially Ako. It's a drat shame she took so long to be introduced, and took longer still to really come into her own. The more even roles for the 4 main girls and the decision to have a top idol group with their own fun interactions instead of one top idol to strive for really work to Aistars's advantage over OGkatsu. A thing I really like about Aikatsu, OG and Stars both, is how well they show the journey from newbie to veteran. Our protagonists start out as newbies, and the top idol senpai are cool veterans who seem totally out of reach, but as our girls get experience, this changes. But, because of how many episodes they have to work with, the transition can be really subtle. The season covers a year and aired over a year, and by the end of it, the cool senpai who seemed so distant now seem almost within reach of our girls. It's really neat, and wouldn't at all have the same impact in a shorter series. A thing I really like about Aistars is how it pays homage to OGkatsu traditions without feeling 100% bound to them. Yume and Laura have a very close friendship/rivalry, but you gotta have pretty strong goggles to see the yuri. Until the movie. The movie abandons all subtlety. The character designs are really cute, even for background characters. Ako is really good. I've rambled enough, but I enjoyed this a lot, and I'm excited for season 2, which is already 40 eps in. I believe Stars is scheduled to end entirely in 10 more episodes...

I think when I prize the keys to the idolwatch out of Oreos's cold dead hands I might stream OGkatsu. It's been long enough that I've forgotten a lot, and I bet I could get past the doldrums of new protagonists finding their feet if I had nakama watching with me.

It gets even better~ I mean, there's still plenty of stupid poo poo and stuff that feels a bit like wasted time, but that's fine when you have an entire year to roll with. Also yes, RIP AiStars. On the plus side, I'm sure they'll a) end it properly, and b) this means none of that weird "we swear Ichigo isn't the protagonist anymore, but we're gonna sorta sideline the new one for half a year" sort of thing they did with OGkatsu. A clean break means no grooming some random underclassman to become the shiny new protagonist, after all.
