In the meantime I liked my Dafoe pic and I thought it'd been to long since I did something digital...so I tried to put everything I'd learned from skillshare and the books Holy Ghost linked. This is the result! I'm pretty drat happy. I also feel like I'm starting to develop a person style. I love the slightly angular lines giving a slight characature impression to my drawings. I dunno if there is a name for this style but I feel so comfortable when I'm in that moment or zone. d3c0y2 fucked around with this message at 06:06 on Feb 25, 2018 |

Ya the eyes are great, it looks like him even if you cover up below the eyes it still looks recognizable as Willem. And you captured his unusual mouth, that REALLY says Willem.

Man I really appreciate that. So often I sort of feel like a dude playing pretend at being an artist. So knowing I've succeeded at that really helps. Thanks!

dupersaurus posted:Do you guys have favorite prompt sources? Drawing fanart of whatever games I like because I'm a talentless hack and can't make anything original. But that's only partly true. The main reason is because I find it a lot easier to draw something I'm interested so drawing fanart of games is just naturally appealing. It also means I can get reference pics easily by just playing the game myself and taking screenshots.

Myself, what I do is just look through a lot of grand manner and pre raphaelite era paintings (because I like those particular styles) and find ones with people with roughly similar head shapes/body poses to what I need. I have a folder with a butt ton of carefully file-name'd and tagged pictures of paintings, basically. I often use those and also old pictures, or just take pictures of my own head at the right angle Thanks man. I hadnt even thought about copyright thing. Suppose that only really matters if you're trying to make money on a pic though?

I do use google image search all the time, you go in the tools section and select usage rights to show pics that you can use with modification, that you can use for non-commercial stuff or ones that are free to use however if you want for the end of all time if you're paranoid about copyright, which I absolutely am as well. Even if I don't find what I need every time, I tend to save a few things as references for later. Flickr can also be searched with a Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication though it's a bit hit or miss if you find what you want. There's also stock photo sites like Pexels that have a lot of free-to-use stock photos. And if you're desperate, wikimedia's creative commons is always an option if you know exactly what you want. When I was doing the marginalia animals, I used the NYPL Public Domain Pictures, which is a treasure trove of old pics: http://publicdomain.nypl.org/pd-visualization/ There's plenty of free stock photos you can search for on deviantart, for figure-drawing SenshiStock is a good one http://senshistock.tumblr.com/post/156191537354/senshistock If you've got a significant other, they usually don't mind doing a couple of quick poses for a phonecam when you ask nicely. If all else fails, dig out the ol' mirror and squint at it, take a selfie, or make faces at a webcam if you got one.

As I'm learning to draw im falling in love with all the undertones and pigmentation on skin I'm noticing. I think slightly exaggerating these as well as the angular lines on certain faces gives me the most joy. I can't even explain why. I might look into caricature more in the future, as I'm feeling as though that might be something I click with. And I guess im gonna have to be very careful who/what I draw if I ever start making money off of art then. I might stick to using google searches for free domain bits etc for the near future! Remedial landscape practice with references. Complicated stuff is a big problem, since far off details like cityscapes seem like they should be simplified but I haven't figured out how to do it in a way that feels right, and I can't replicate stuff like mountains and rocks well from imagination. Bottom right was just a thing from imagination for fun.

I went into this picture wanting to do a proper background. I think it actually came out...well, okay. Better than usual I mean. Which isn't saying much since usually I don't even do a background. Keeping track of everything gets to be such a headache. Also proper lighting continues to be a subject that mystifies me. But at least I actually finished something I found really difficult. Its hard to keep drawing a picture you think is gonna turn out terribly. For fun here's the same pic before I colored it; Internet Kraken fucked around with this message at 10:48 on Feb 26, 2018 |

This is a delight to hear since I, like smallmouth (who made a kicking rad bearded agama with lovely pinks in it argh like a fool I said nothiiiing), feel frumpy about my art as of late even though I do my best to keep self-downer comments to myself because gently caress you, brainmeat. I know you know better than this! I promise the process is easy to replicate. You start with a circle and then you add shapes until it looks like A Thing, and then you take that and run with it and then you add stuff and story that fits The Thing. Like here I made the little cat shape because I saw a stain that looked like a catface in a hoodie, and then I decided it needs to sit in a city, and then I thought it was lost and lonely so add a company and a light, and then I thought "cat city -> cat climbing tree houses" and walla, done. I don't recommend this if you want to get something really good done, since I rarely nail poo poo like composition or colours 'cause I don't plan ahead far enough. ThePlague-Daemon posted:
Try to spend as little time on the furthest stuff as you can. Practice trying to capture the essence of the shapes without refining them too much. And when you've done that, don't stare at them individually and think "no this looks like just a blob I better pull out the tiny brush and get to work", let you eye travel across the pic like a casual observers eye would. Having said that, you've still got a good sense of depth on them all. This reminded me: like I just saw this freaking incredible Godzilla art where there's the bare minimum to define the background city and just whizzy lines for an explosion and it just completely sells the idea of recognizable things to your brain and then runs away laughing: https://cheungchungtat.deviantart.com/art/Godzilla-01-185275549 I, personally, can't get enough of pics of watercreatures flying through the air and that goes double for all kinds of rays. I noticed there's an enchanted sword and a magical doorway, so is this a scene from a game? I had a terrible hole in my education which we're working on fixing - I just watched babbys first Hellraiser and drat, I really love the way the scenes are framed and the play between light and dark. It's also so refreshing to see so many practical effects, so here's one of my favourite makeups from the film, Frank the monster:

Doing a character design thing with some co-workers where we picked three attributes at random from a hat, and do something with it. I picked, "dumb, energetic, and piercing eyes". Struggled with finding a concept, but then the olympics inspired me. I'll re-work the face some more tomorrow and then start rendering.

I don't know what it is, it just feels like sometimes when there's too much variation on a surface or environment I have trouble getting the idea of it down and it takes a lot longer than it really should. I think it's just a problem of getting psyched out by textures. I might have to start doing these without my glasses. I did these today. I think the left one's a little more successful. Then I drew a space pirate. That's a good Frank.

Life drawing in a different city, some of the longest poses I've ever drawn: 30 and 45 minutes respectively. I was skeptical but I actually really enjoyed it, mostly cuz the model was fantastic. And some warm-ups with one of those fat charcoal pencils with the string, where you unwrap the tip. Difficult to get details but I like how expressive it is.

I'm still on this crazy train My apologies to Ste Audrey I've been struggling to find character in my drawing and character in what I'm drawing -- but that's expected as I'm criminally out of practice -- but I think with the last two I'm starting to find it. I think I was trying to be too conceptual and climbing up my own rear end, so I took a few steps back and it helped. Choosing to go straight to pen is helping keep me honest, even if it's upping the difficulty.

Maybe it's because currently my drawing time is always at ~23:00 to midnight, so I'm pretty drat tired myself at that point. Case in point: I did intend on doing some feet study today, but was too tired to motivate myself for it. https://twitter.com/Shinmera/status/968977533340454912 Spinster posted:Its hair I can't get. Aaaarrrgh. I have no idea if this will help you at all, I'm just some schmuck, but here's some stuff that I keep in mind when drawing longish hair: Generally hair will curve very smoothly and hardly ever do edges, except at the end of a strand. Long strands of hair generally start out pretty straight and then curve at the end, shorter strands can curve immediately. When drawing hair you will want to see that you can balance things out so that it doesn't all have the same curvature and direction. Even when you apply things like wind that will drag hair in a particular direction you will still have lots of different bending directions in the curves that cancel each other out. While hair does have volume and can spread out a lot, watch out that things don't get too poofy. I like to start out with a skull as the base and then draw lines out from where the hairline would be. The hairline should connect with the skull. When drawing realistically hair can be intimidating because there's lots of it, but just remember that most of everything will bunch together into strands that you can draw as a volume, rather than as individual hair lines. Take a look at hairstyles you like and try to simplify them into as few lines that form volumes as you can. Maybe that'll give you a better mental model of how it works.
