The best was from the documentary about Who on Audio from one of the DVDs, where Jason Haigh-Ellery says he was originally going to call Big Finish "Rock Solid Productions", but changed his mind when he realized it sounded like the name of a porn company. Then, after a few moments, he confesses "I know Big Finish doesn't sound much better."

(FYI, they got the name Big Finish from an ep of the Steven Moffat series "Press Gang")

The other best was when Big Finish got the license to produce New Who related audios, and they did an interview with RTD who steadily got more ramped up with excitement talking about the potential stories there were to tell :3:

Watching some "classic" revival series, the New Dimension special that aired just before Rose. And it's narrated by David Tennant! Paying close attention, there's scenes from the finale cut in here, specifically the regeneration scene. Kind of neat to see at this point. Oh and Matt Lucas is in the audience!

The Wire would make for a pretty interesting villain to bring back, especially if they did it in the present where she would be made infinitely more powerful by the existence of the internet.

It's always interesting to see the lead up into Rose. Like, I remember at the time there was a big public interest in seeing Doctor Who actually appearing again, on television, and a sort of excitment about it all. Especially with Billie Piper as the companion.

I remember the massive hype when it aired, and watching it with my sister to see what all the fuss was about (I'd watched the movie - not really knowing what it was - and seen an edited-down version of Pyramids of Mars, the 40th Anniversary documentary, and had the general Doctor Who knowledge that exists in in the UK pop culture collective consciouness).

I just remember being really really thrilled.

I had dial up in that era so I watched it on SciFi like a pleb.

Loved it every step of the way.

I have distant, dim memories of watching the Movie back when that came out but I never really thought anything about it or associated it with anything, good or bad. It was just Something That Was On. May not have even seen it all at the time.

Rose brought me to the Who party and I've been glad to be here ever since.

Somewhere around the third or fourth season a friend of mine sent me TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN, PYRAMIDS OF MARS and THE PIRATE PLANET and I absolutely fell in love with Classic Who as well

Bicyclops
Aug 27, 2004

I started with Rose and it didn't win me over right away, to be honest. I think I appreciate it a little more now that I have a feel for the show overall, though. It took until about David Tennant for me to start to like the show. I like Nine, but I still think he'd have been a better fit for a different kind of writing. His best episodes are the Moffat-penned ones for a reason. Tennant just seems to get what Davies is about immediately and runs with it.

Yeah I’m another who was initially put off the revival by Rose, I didn’t start watching until a little into the Tennant era. Going back to the Eccleston episodes I did really like most of them. End of the World is a much, much better introduction to what RTD Doctor Who is all about.

I still absolutely adore that scene in End of the World where the Doctor momentarily leaves Rose alone, and she's looking around at all the aliens surrounding her and the sudden reality of the crazy life she is now living comes crashing in on her.

My experience of Doctor Who was via the DVDs and some of the BBC Books novels. My main point of confusion about "Rose" and the revival in general was why each story was only one episode instead of four.

Seriously, I watched little to no "current" TV other than cartoons (who remembers Fillmore! on the Disney Channel?) and Dead Ringers in 2005.

And doesn't the next scene just taking in the fact that everyone she knows has been long dead and the planet she grew up on is about to be destroyed?

I sort of dimly remember watching The End Of The World and the one with the farting aliens. Oh, I definitely watched the Simon Pegg one because I was a big fan of Simon Pegg, and then the Empty Child ones. It wasn't until series 4 that I really followed the show though

Yep, which also plays into the notion of the Doctor as time traveller being somebody who doesn't think linearly. He offers Rose that same perspective by being able to talk to her mother on the phone 5 billion years in the past folding laundry while Rose is in the future looking at the remains of the planet, then takes them back to "the present" (2005) where everybody is alive and just going about their everyday lives. And Rose ends up giving up trying to make sense of it all and just asks if they can go get some chips :)

The Doctor tells her she'll have to pay because he doesn't have any money :3:
