gently caress Kyle Busch, obviously, but I think the safest thing to do in that situation is to get to pit road ASAP, even if that means going in reverse.

BMB5150 posted:It's kind of justified to do this to not kill someone. As much as I dislike not racing back to the yellow, it really wasn't sustainable in the context of safety. It's similar to the pit road speed limit, when you watch old races and see guys bombing on down pit road wide open it's stupidly unsafe.

# ? Mar 5, 2018 01:34 |

I like not watching guys die on the track and in the pits. The other stuff is secondary for me. I'll never forget my parents having to explain to me that JD McDuffie had died.

Speaking of dieing, I had no idea that Joe Weatherly was killed at Riverside. This video treats his death as little more than a footnote. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7o8X44h3TI That he was killed instantly and the race continued on is nuts. It's not like he died later at the hospital, he was dead on the scene and yet the race officials said "The show must go on." hosed up.

They did the same thing with JD McDuffie, except it was only lap 6 and they could have easily just postponed the race for a day... It is good that we have safety barriers that actually provide some safety these days... Also, the interview with the public relations guy is almost comical, the interviewer is less than a foot away from him.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YNsk4GjM2I

The biggest thing about that video is how long you can watch before an official bothers to do anything. About a minute after the crash one slowly ambles along the barrier like he's walking back to his car from Subway.

McDuffie I knew about, and it's shameful. But there was something extra flippant in the Riverside video that rubbed me the wrong way. I like to think that today we have a better sense of perspective and would immediately call the race. The underappreciated legacy of Earnhardt is that racing is many times safer because of his death.

I think of that often. We lost Kenny Irwin and the King's grandson in a very short time and nothing. But we lose Senior and poo poo loving happens. I hate that we lost them, and I especially hate it that it took Dale dying for things to change. If HANS devices had been required years ago we could be celebrating the tail end of Adam's career now and Dale could be crotchety on Twitter.

All these old videos have been a jarring reminder for safety overall- but for me the most noticeable are the non-SAFER barrier walls. They haven't been everywhere all that long, but holy poo poo I had forgotten how hard a concert wall is. We all remember Gordon's wreck at Vegas not that many years ago, but it has been a long time since the outside corners didn't have SAFER barriers- and seeing some of these wrecks it's perplexing how no one thought about/demanded doing it earlier.
