Your humble, esoteric hosts discuss cats, interview Kat Lee (shags people for money, on and off camera, with her twin, "Kit") and then talk mostly about paedophiles. A very peado heavy ep. Also fairly racist.

HH Holmes
Happy Valencrimes Day! Alaina teaches us about Chicago's famed serial killer: HH Holmes. A career swindler and criminal, Holmes left a trail of wives, properties, and bodies in his wake. The question is, how reliable are these stories, and how can we be sure when so much evidence was destroyed or lost?

Cedar Point
Grant helps us lighten up and have some fun for once! Cedar Point is one of America's oldest and greatest amusement parks, changing and growing along with, and then setting, the trends of family entertainment. Would Boeckling recognize what's happened to his summer resort, or feel pride at the continued reinvention? Is history cyclical no matter where you look? How many past episodes have connections to this one?

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
Alaina treats herself on her birthday episode by talking about a tragic fire in the early 1900s. After the (primarily women and immigrant) workers of the New York garment industry began winning better conditions and pay, one factory lagged behind. Then, it burned down, killing 146 people in under 20 minutes. In the end, the owners made a profit on the insurance as the victims' families were left without their income. Is preparedness a substitute for systemic prevention? How do we focus grief into action? How do you place a value on human life?

Convicts in Australia
Grant opens his horizons and shares what he's taught himself about one of the few things he knows about Australian history: its beginnings as a penal colony. Over 80 years, on 806 ships, over 164,000 convicts were sent to the colonies of Australia, which were built on their backs. Who defines crime, and who benefits from it? How does a nation's founding legend shape its identity? Did they earn more than an expunged record?

GENRE: COMEDY

DESCRIPTION
Me and my pals Stephen and Jordan are doing a deep dive into Steven Tyler's autobiography: "Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?" Its an insane book and he is consistently proving to us that he is a terrible human being.
Its a comedy podcast where we discuss the book for 1-3 hours, then editing it into 20-30 minutes of goofs.

I think the general consensus is that Episode 3 is the most accessible. I like 2 the most. I edit the episodes and create the art. Look at this goddamn thing I made for a latest episode, titled Failson of Zeus:

Its been a real challenge to get people to listen to it. I'm lost when it comes to self promotion. Also its a podcast about Steven Tyler. Thats okay though, I just want to make something weird/funny:

If I were you I'd probably start with Episode 3, then go to 4. If you like them, go back and listen to Episodes 0, 1 and 2. On the first couple episodes we were finding our fight. I hadn't even met my cohosts until about 10 minutes before we started recording.

Episode 4 also features the debut of our Steven Tyler Book Club Rock Band "Skull Braid"

And that some unknown other number of people looked at the script and thought, "yeah, I want to be a part of this" and actively worked to get that very same movie made? Either did we, until we watched Demonlover. It is a one of a kind movie that serves as a prime example of why some things should only ever be one of a kind, if even that.

Genre: Comedy, Entertainment, History(?)
Release Schedule: Weekly-ish

Email us: breakingmayberry@gmail.com

Breaking Mayberry is a comedy/criticism podcast where two guys (one of which is me) go back and watch every episode of the Andy Griffith Show to understand why its such a big deal. What made this show such a cultural touchstone, and why is it always brought up by conservatives as "the way things should be?" Along the way, we learn about the turbulent '60s, come up with fan theories, and explore the weird world of Mayberry. The comedy holds up - the lessons not so much.

Recent Favs:
Two Hillbillies of Verona : An episode where we both really liked the Andy Griffith show eps, where a man comes back from the dead and Andy fixes a family feud.

All The Crime You Can Eat: We bring on an actual lawyer to explain the history of the Supreme court and learn that all the horrifying abuses of police power we see in the show were actually mostly legal at the time. In this episode, a man goes to jail because Barney Fife feels bad about himself.

MANHUNT!: The first episode, which introduces the Andy Griffith concept, and also details one of the craziest and most ridiculous half-hours of TV we've ever witnessed.

Live-Action Disney Films of the 1950s
Alaina turns her Disney series toward the company's best known product! Well, maybe second-best-known. Following tentative steps, an accounting issue led to the studio's first entirely live-action films, establishing some trends that have fallen away, and others that have continued for nearly 70 years. Are today's teen Disney stars the last echo of the old studio system? What is lost in the selective memory of media? How much room is there for art on an assembly line?

Charles Guiteau and Leon Czolgosz
In 1881, a man killed the President of the United States. In 1901, another man killed another President of the United States. Grant teaches us about these two: their motivations, their preparations, their trials, and the effects of their acts. Is assassination a part of American politics? How do such different people meet at the same conclusion?

Bonus! C2E2 2018
Our annual trip to our local comic (and etc.) convention was a great time, and we'd like to share it with you! Here's what we saw, did, and bought at 2018's Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo. Below are links to just about everything we mention:

Girl Scouts of the USA
Founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA has become "the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls". As a lifetime member, Alaina tells us about Juliette Gordon Low's life, the development of the program, and the current challenges they face. Also, cookies. When does an organization develop past its roots? How do two very similar programs take such different stances to the changing times?

This is a very stupid show made by two pseudonymous idiots who get pretty high and talk about stoner metal - though not necessarily Stoner Metal - just any metal in which cannabis has played a strong advisory role. Every episode, there's a deep dive into a historically important album (Sleep's Dopesmoker, Black Sabbath's Master of Reailty, etc.), as well as some shorter segments like Dope or Nope, The Tone Zone, etc.. Yes, the Doughboys are a large influence.

Surrealism
As Dada began to burn itself out in the 1920s, a splinter movement rose from within: Surrealism. What we know now as an art movement began as a mode of thought, a philosophy, a practice. In this episode Grant teaches us about their goals, their political program, and where they all went once the band broke up. Can you exercise control over a movement meant to break boundaries and hierarchies? Is the most famous surrealist the worst at Surrealism? Which art movement would win in a fight?

New Episodes

Crazy Andy's House of Artillery!
First up, the glitz and glam of the movies arrives in little old Mayberry... in the most boring, monotonous way possible. Marty gets to share some classic and modern film trivia, and Dan tells us of the time Rob Schneider irritated his entire hometown. Next, would you like to buy a cannon? Andy and Barney find out that it's a little harder to get rid of a confederate monument than you might think. That is only a slight exaggeration of what happens here.

Your Moral Lessons Have Bankrupted the Floyd Family!

First, an irritated Aunt Bee drives the entire town to madness with one sentence and the men of Mayberry either save a man from suicide or drive him to it - we can't tell which. Second, Andy is picked to be the sole judge of a beauty contest and hey, maybe there's a reason that's never a thing that actually happens.
