WCW Worldwide did an article on them awhile ago, you can see Vader there. The actual production runs for Sting and Hogan were different. Macho was never produced.

I guess my wonder is: would the Macho head have had a hat, or a bandana in that era?

Definitely hat.

Somehow the actual Sting head looks better than the mock-up.

A few of those numbers are a bit on the high side. Road Wild 99 came right after the Hogan return in the red and yellow and Halloween Havoc had some interest due to it being Russo's first PPV.

Hogan doubling the non Hogan buyrates was absolutely huge. Keep in mind the PPV universe was much smaller in 94 than it was in 98.

But didn't Hogan's contract basically gobble up any profit the company could have made from it until 1996 or so?
I had heard that he was basically only paying for himself.
Especially considering WCW was excruciatingly terrible at merchandising during this period, and Hogan didn't work the house shows, brother.

They turned a very small profit in 95. He had a great deal but the company was still bringing in more money from Hogan than they paid him until 2000.

Hogan was still getting partially paid off by another division of Time Warner at that time wasn't he?

Death of WCW had some bits implying that bringing in Hogan spurred some of the soaring unnecessary production costs, but I don't know how true that is.

I think the biggest deal was how much Hogan got percentage-wise on every PPV he appeared in. Which wasn't a big deal when they were ultra successful, but was really bad once they started hitting sub 1.0 buyrates.

As Meltzer has gone into exhaustively, all the contracts were fine when the company was making money. But once things collapsed they collapsed so thoroughly and so rapidly that even if every wrestler on the roster was working for free they would still lose millions upon millions of dollars.

I just finished a re-read of the Observers from 99-2001 and it's amazing how fast it all fell apart. But given the way they let talent blow off house shows and delivered awful television, it's also completely unsurprising and inevitable.

That sounds more like Bischoff is to blame than Hogan: Eric was a guy frequently quoted as saying "It's Ted Turner's money, not mine".

Competition is probably why things changed so much, I'd think. Instead of taking to twitter, Dolph would have just gone to WCW long ago.

Yeah but it was also bizarre compared to the previous decade. Most stuff from the early 90s feels like the 80s weren't allowed to die.

I think they paid some huge sum of money just to have him walk to the ring to Jimi Hendrix 'Voodoo Chile', only to have Mike Tenay call the song 'Voodoo Chilli'.

It was Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and it was Tony Schiavone who screwed it up.

Also they paid $1,000,000 for the rights and it was worth it because his entrance was incredible.

According to random message board and reddit posts a lot of people remember it as Tenay, as I did.

The radio verson of the song is voodoo child (slight return) but there was an older cut called voodoo chile and I can only imagine that's what it said on the announcer's notes because how else could they possibly pronounce it "chili"?

They are two different songs from a very famous album. Given that people to this day don't know the difference it's not that weird.

Could have been Mike but I remembered it being Tony.

Spending money on Voodoo Child was not one of them. The song rules so much it made a balding old rear end leather tanned Hogan strumming a belt like a guitar WORK.

Not really. The 80's were very different during the 1st half compared to the 2nd half of the decade. Pre 85-86 it was still very much dark smokey arenas featuring local guys in black trunks and porn staches. WWF especially changed massively between 86 and 89. At wrestlemania 3 you had king kong bundy fighting midgets, which was very old school carny. By 89 you had cartoon gimmicks everywhere, with bright lighting and great production values for the time.

We used to go to the nwo website and print off the logo and paste them up all over the hallways and in classrooms. One day we went to math class and we stuck some up on the wall and told a girl to write 'buff is the stuff' on the blackboard. The teacher who was in the classroom before us had forgotten something and came back in and saw what we had done and said 'I wondered who was doing this!!' and she was pissed. Then she opened her bag and pulled out a bunch of nwo posters we had stuck up earlier and held them up and said 'this is gang activity!!!'

She called the principal down to the class to report it, and when the principal showed up, he acted like we were all in trouble, but then took off his jacket and button up shirt to reveal an nWo t-shirt then 2-sweeted the whole class.

I recently found out the theme he used at Starrcade was a cut from Desperado by Tito and the Tarantulas. So he's not just making other wrestlers less cool, but other non-related media less cool by his dorky association.

Bischoff running around as Hogan's little toadie, holding the mic for him and treating him like a god is incredible. Hogan's act isn't supposed to actually be cool, it is supposed to be something he thinks is cool. Nash/Hall and later the Wolfpac were supposed to be cool and can be judged on this merit.
