Oh yeah if its just Spencer Id skip it. Lane 8 is an unbelievable experience live as well so your money is definitely better spent there.

Also do yourself a favor and listen to A&Bs Group Therapy Radio show every week and also Armin Van Burens A State of Trance. Group Therapy is pretty much entirely how I keep up with this stuff. Explore older ones if you can but definitely keep up with it for almost a constant deluge of amazing new trance, progressive, house and EDM.
Years ago, I used to get every annual ASOT compilation album and listen to those like crazy, but I fell off of that for whatever reason. I should probably get back to that, yeah, and check out Group Therapy too.

When I looked up A&B on Spotify earlier, they had a staggering amount of music on there. Like, it wasn't just their studio albums. It was compilation after compilation after compilation and it was kinda loving intimidating. Like how would I ever parse all of this???

Lane 8 chat.

Saw him twice on ship, once b2b Yotto and the other was the 3 hour sunrise set. My girlfriend is really into deep house right now because of his sets.

Just saw again him this weekend. His current tour is his “This never happened” concept. They put tape over the camera on your phone and ask that you don’t record anything. It was 18+ but he attracts an older more chill crowd so the vibes were spot on. Plays a 2 hour set. Worth going to even if you only know one of his tracks.

Lane 8 puts out a quarterly mix that is near three hours or so and it’s always top notch. Those are definitely worth checking out (SoundCloud) and make great music for powering through stuff at work I find.

I'm pretty sure it's a mini vinyl picture disc, but I don't have a working turntable so I can't check it out. Maybe that's their new album release date though?! Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

Hey Rage, I figured this would be the best place to post this and thought you might have a good take on it. I got really into electronic music back in 2009ish, really starting with house music and then dipping into deep house, dubstep, and other genres. But maybe in the last year or so, I have really fallen out of the EDM world. I just feel like it has become so saturated that where before it was easy to find new and interesting music/artists, now I skip through 20 tracks of the same trap drop before I can find something interesting, let alone good.

Obviously that's a pretty general statement and there is of course some great music being made in the EDM world, but I don't know if all of the noise has just slowly pushed me away. I remember when I was really into it, I had a Spotify Playlist I would update with new tracks nearly every day. I have maybe checked out 6 "EDM" tracks in the last 4 months that weren't a major release by an artist I like.

Flume is a great example because I feel like his music when it first came out was really new and original and exciting. But now we have 100 Flume clones that don't sound as good. I guess what I am looking for are some of the original/unique voices I should be looking at in edm, preferably newer acts I can get into. Here are a list of my current favorite artists to give you an idea.

Definitely check out Rezz's entire discography. I feel like she's really setting herself apart as doing something different while also being tied closer to the EDM world than any other scene. She started out being signed to OWSLA (Skrillex's label), but now she's on mau5trap (deadmau5's label). I know you mentioned deadmau5 as one that you liked (and I too really enjoy deadmau5), but I feel like he's been losing traction as a legendary godlike figure in the scene recently (despite his last album W:/2016ALBUM/ being pretty solid) , and to me, Rezz feels like a protege of his who's surpassing her teacher. In some ways she's making music that sounds kinda similar to what deadmau5 makes, but way more captivating and fresh IMO. She definitely has her own unique sound that the majority of EDM artists aren't even coming close to touching. The kicker to this is that she's only loving 22 and she's already proved herself to be insanely talented and prolific in a couple years time, so seeing where she goes in the future is gonna be incredibly exciting.

The Glitch Mob too, definitely. You said you got into electronic music in 2009, and they came on the scene like the year after that. Their music is real cinematic but also high-energy. My first exposure to them was their remix of Daft Punk's Derezzed from the TRON Legacy soundtrack, but then I checked out the album they'd put out before that (Drink the Sea) and loved it, then they came out with their 2nd album Love Death Immortality in 2014 and I'm not joking when I say it's one of my favorite albums of all time. They have a unique approach to composition/atmosphere/arrangement that many artists aren't even attempting, but also they make the type of poo poo that, if I listen to it while driving, I absolutely need to speed. There's just no question when it comes to that. I feel like I'm doing their music a disservice if I listen to it while I'm not going fast, as corny as that may sound haha. Drink the Sea (from 2010) had a largely cold/distant style to it while Love Death Immortality is more in your face, although still different from most other artists. The new single they put out last night from their new album seems to be blending those two styles, which has me crazy excited to hear how the rest of it sounds. They play stuff from their entire discography live, though. It's not like they completely ignore what they did in the past, which I appreciate.

You mentioned Porter Robinson. Have you heard his new project Virtual Self? It's him making Eurodance/Dance Dance Revolution/trance style music from yeeeeeeears ago (very early 2000s) and it's pretty loving different from his usual output, while also being a total throwback. He's only put out one EP as Virtual Self so far (this past November), but every track hits it out of the park for me and it goes to show his versatility as an artist that he can move from his early "complextro" stuff to Worlds and then to this and pull it all off successfully. It's like anything he touches is going to be a win with me. You can still this is Porter making this stuff even with how different it is from his past releases, which rules.

ODESZA too. They got started like 6 years ago, so after you'd first gotten into electronic music. Their stuff has this super lush production that chills me out unlike the majority of other artists. Usually when I'm feeling anxious/panicky, I'll throw on a Tycho album, but Tycho doesn't really qualify as EDM. ODESZA kind of occupies this same niche for me now, except they're more closely tied to the EDM world. Their album In Return is one of those that will instantly calm me right the gently caress down if I'm overthinking about something. It's one of those albums that no matter how many times I listen to it, it never gets old for me. Because of that, I wouldn't hesitate to call it one of my all-time favorites. I wasn't as into their newest album A Moment Apart when it first came out, though I've been revisiting it and appreciating it more and more recently.

Yah I have listened to all of those artists as well and I enjoy each of them. Odesza's first album was a masterpiece and I have been following Glitch Mob for a good while, but their stuff can be hit or miss for me I feel. I do enjoy Rezz, but think I like her music more at a show than I do just listening. And I don't necessarily agree she is passing mau5 because when it comes to melody, I don't think she really comes close to him. But I don't think melodies are the focus of her sound and that's ok.

I do enjoy Virtual Self, maybe not as much as Porter and Worlds but its definitely solid. I was curious if you feel the scene is really saturated and clogged up with generic copies of copies of DJ's/Producers.

I mean there are a lot of artists out there doing similar things, and admittedly when I put on my New Music Friday/Release Radar playlists on Spotify sometimes, there are a lot of tracks that sound like rehashes to me, or even if they aren't, they certainly don't sound fresh at least.

But like you mentioned Lane 8, and I think so did AccountSupervisor (who actually persuaded me to buy a ticket to his show). I saw him live last Friday and he was loving excellent! And that's someone I had never heard of before very recently, so there are definitely unique artists out there.

You just have to do a little digging to find the real gems in the genre, even though that can sometimes seem like a chore. But man, when you finally do find some good stuff, it's really good.

Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Jimmy T.
Yah, I guess what I am trying to convey is that it seems harder to find artists in this genre that have their own "sound". Granted its more difficult with EDM in general because a vocalist provides so much of the sound/character that is recognizable in other genres. But with the acts that I mentioned, I can usually tell when a track of theirs comes on in a mix. Dubstep was cool for a minute, but I just can't listen to any of that stuff for more than 10 minutes if it doesn't have some melody in it. Seven Lions is a great example because he makes some heavy dubstep, but his melodies are so good that I can listen to that stuff for hours.

It seems like everyone we have mentioned has been around for at least a few years now, Rezz being the newest of them I think. Where/Who are the new acts in EDM that are bringing something fresh/exciting?

They don't exist.

I'm you, I listened to an awful lot of stuff in these genres 10+ years ago when blogs were just kicking off. You could click through all the blogs and collect dozens of tracks, roll through them at random and then pick out some gems and dispose of the others/leave them sat on a hard drive somewhere. It seems when the US decided dance music was called 'EDM' and everything needed a hard drop poo poo started to go South. I've clicked through a lot of stuff posted in here but nothing's grabbed me like the stuff of old, it's just not as interesting. There's some decent tunes but for the most part they're all derivative, like you say there's a million Flume clones and likewise many other 'famous' producers have dozens of copycats. The 'big room' fiasco a few years ago was particularly hilarious when everyone realised it was all the same poo poo recycled...

This What So Not album is extremely my poo poo and I'm only a few tracks in, hell yeah :eyepop:

I got to see Virtual Self's first festival performance ever tonight. There were some technical difficulties (I think he may have lost power or something?), but those only lasted for like 10 minutes and he played for a good hour and a half. He played his entire EP but also lots of other stuff too. I swear to god, he was playing stuff with BPMs of like gabber/breakcore at times. I was headbanging so fast I made myself dizzy. Most people there weren't going nearly as hard, or they were just standing completely still, which I don't know how the gently caress you could do with a set like that, but I guess they were expecting a typical Porter Robinson set and were confused when they found out they were very wrong

I also saw CloZee, Spag Heddy, Boogie T B2B Ganja White Night, Snails and Alison Wonderland before Virtual Self. CloZee and Alison Wonderland were definitely the best out of those.

Going back tomorrow to see Illenium, Bassnectar and maybe Rezz (she's playing after Bassnectar and closing out the night but on like the complete opposite end of the festival grounds and the layout is stupid and there's only one way to get to the stage where she's playing and it's really far from where I'll be seeing Bassnectar :negative: ). I wouldn't care so much about that, but tonight the cops were forcing everyone to leave the festival grounds right after Virtual Self ended, giving me no time to stop and breathe.

e: Look at this video someone took of the Virtual Self set on Twitter, it was loving insane
