At my high school we had a turkish foreign exchange student from Istanbul. Me and my nerdy friends made a Constantinople joke and he looked sad and said “we don’t like when you call it that”

Didn't realize until I was like 16 that "subtle" (written) and "suttle" (spoken) were the same damned thing. Also thought a comb (for hair) and the "comb" in honeycomb were pronounced differently.
