The bridge might be targeted so someone has one less escape route, is the thing. There might be bonus benefits but just one less bridge could easily be something the godmachine is after.

Does the GM have some sort of compulsion for Rube Goldberg schemes or something? I'm not sure destroying this bridge is the target, or the only target. The artist had pictures of lots of bridges, lots of bridge disasters. When we can we should probably have at least a quick look around the other major bridges in town to make sure they don't have some shady fuckery going on. Even if this is the only one, just destroying the bridge might not be enough. Maybe when they are all charged up the machines will cause an earthquake centered on that spot. A flood. A volcano even. Who knows? Destroying the bridge with a bomb could have very different social effects from the bridge being destroyed by a natural disaster, and those social effects might be the real goal. But yeah, if merely destroying the bridge is the goal the fake cops and fake artists seem like a real inefficient way of going about it. The Machine works in mysterious ways.

Outrail posted:Does the GM have some sort of compulsion for Rube Goldberg schemes or something? Short Answer: Yes. Long Answer: the GM isn't all powerful, it has to operate using "Occult Physics", the hidden rules of reality that pretty much no one but it is aware of. These rules are weird and nonsensical, but they are rules. They are like spells that require specific components. The classic example from the text is: to summon this specific angel, the GM needs people to burn four copies of the November 1994 issue of Vogue on four intersection of Washington and 1st Street in four different cities. Then the angel is summoned. Its plans often are chained together too. So for whatever reason the GM needs this bridge to fall in this specific way, blowing it up simply doesn't fit it's need. But is this bridge falling the end result? Or is it a link in the chain? We honestly don't know. Now later we might run into it planting C4 someplace because in that "spell" doesn't specify how something needs to be destroyed.

So there a better than good chance they're doing this for a reason, or they need it to blow up mystical y, or at a specific time. Let's blow up the drat bridge. Scorched earth and area denial all the way.

Okay, that's less worrying then. Even though I voted for the basement I'm not at all confident it's a good idea. Maybe just less bad as a Demon. If we're siphoning Aether is it necessarily Infrastructure that we'd be interfacing with? With the added caveat that it might take us hours to get unhooked? Or is that less of an issue if we're in Demon form? As for what to do with our possible...hostages? We could In My Pocket some kind of restraints (duct tape could work but wouldn't be the most secure) and toss them in the trunk. Both of them in there could theoretically untie each other though. Would In My Pocket even work? We don't really have any pockets.

“You take the long way, I’ll take a short cut,” you tell Kind before grabbing Moroni. “What about Queen Bitch?” Kind rasps. “We got her phone, she’ll die here...” you pause, struggling with that choice. “I’ll take her,” Kind says, getting to her feet as napalm rains around her. “Go!” You sling Moroni over your shoulder like a side of beef, holding onto him with one hand while the other three punch out the window. You cannot zap down to the ground holding another person. You drop him partially to the floor and wrap your legs around him, squeezing him between your knees. You lean out of the window and sink your claws into outside of the building. Your pull yourself, and Moroni, out through the window and, after steadying yourself, start to crawl down the building, Moroni dangling from your legs. You pray that no one is looking in your direction as you do so, or else they will see the unconscious Moroni seeming to drift to the icy ground by himself. 1. Where do you stash him? A Stick him in the nearby dumpster. It’s cold out, so whatever we end up doing we’ll have to do quickly. B. There is a bench in the vestibule of the building, duck in there and put him there. C. The car is around the corner, we can move fast enough to stick him in the backseat. Alright, back to the building. Smoke is now coming out of the window you broke, and you think you can hear a worn down fire alarm sounding off. After a moment you hear the report of Kind’s guns from somewhere on the second story. She seems to be doing fine, but if the mortal police and fire departments hasn’t been called yet they will be soon. You need to move fast. You zip around the base of the building, looking for an in. Eventually you find a basement window that is open and, without pausing, slide through it. Your body compresses and oozed into and out of shape like water. Your eyes take a moment adjust in the dimness, low-light vision has not been a gift granted to you. When you can finally see it looks like any boiler room/superintendent’s office present in a building like this, though void of it’s occupant. A grumbling furnace, pipes zigzagging through the space. A desk squats in a dim corner, filthy and covered in various mechanical bits. A green army cot is behind it, as if it’s hiding itself in shame. There is what appears to be a collection of outdated calendars are duct-taped to the wall. Some show the pinnacle of 90s automotive achievement, some show made up and airbrushed women straddling motorcycles, one looks less like a calendar and more like a QR code, but if it was made of spirals. The calendar is your first clue of weirdness. The giant gears are your second. At first you don’t see them because they aren’t quite there, on this plane. But they pop clearly into existence after a moment, a pair of giant mashing teeth, one on the floor the other in a wall. They look ancient and rusted, though you know full well with the Machine that red stains are often not rust. Right now they are oddly silent and immobile. Around the gears is a charnel house for art. Torn and ripped paintings litter the ground, and are caught in the gears’ teeth. Sculptures lay shattered, and ceramic dust coats the refuse like a blanket. Attached to the gears is a collection of pipes that travel from this room and vanish into the ceiling above. These pipes rattle and whistle as what looks like steam escapes them. The boiler hums to life, waking from its slumber. Though you cannot be sure without spending Aether, you assume these gears are acting as a battery, fueling either the building’s tenets or the innocuous-screen itself with Essence that is needed to run. This Essence, when burned off as waste material, produces the Aether that you and your siblings use. This is just a theory, one that you cannot prove without getting a little closer... Suddenly shadows shift. Something huge and spidery descends from the ceiling. It is the superintendent. He has throw aside his human guise and is instead a long centipede like creature with the upperbody of some oily humanoid monster. Its head is mostly mouth, filled with diamond teeth. It scurried to the boiler and pops off the boiler’s cowl, revealing a blinking row of buttons and diodes. As it turns from you, you see the laughably small wings on its back. “Bah, nonono..” it mutters to itself as it examines the gauges. “drat ‘em, drat ‘em both. What are ya doin’ to my building?” It half-skitters half-flies to the gears and grabs a framed painting. A still life of some fruit. The Superintendent holds the painting over the gears and mutters a word. There is a pop and most of the painting is gone, and a shower of blood rains on the gears. When the gears are splashed with blood, they start to turn slowly. The Superintendent drops the broken frame of the painting (the parts he was holding) on the ground and scurries over to the gauges again. “Ho ho ho ho, more power, let’s see how ya handle more power..” 2. What is the plan here D Run away. E Get close enough to try to Sabotage the gears, at least temporarily. F Try to siphon some Aether G Talk to him (what do we say?) H Try to kill him. _________________________________________________________________________ So, assuming things do not drastically change, we will meet up with Kind at the car and crash at a free agency after this. Plans obviously can get hosed, but as of now that is the plan. One thing I learned when rolling in full Demon-mode, Ink is really good at physical stuff. Her multi-arms and super strength stack in a very fun way, and that’s just carrying around an unconscious artist! We rolled an exceptional success in hiding from the Super, so we now have the Steadfast condition. When we Fail a roll that I think we should have Succeeded at, I’ll resolve it to instead get a single success. I love the idea of the DSA and that for sure will be our Aspiration. But I am going to put Dismantle the bridge Infrastructure as our Aspiration too. I think we will probably deal with that before the DSA. We can guess he's not that big of a fighter, otherwise why isn't he up there dealing with Kind, but he might have some nasty surprises. He turned that painting into blood to feed the gears which is kinda alarming. Plus the fact that he was human-looking and now clearly isn't points to Angelic or Demonic.

1. C 2. D I don't think trying to sabotage the gears is necessarily a good idea. The gears are part of what makes this building look the way it does, rather than as whatever it truly is. Right now what it is is on fire. If this contraption can make the building not look like it is on fire, then it won't attract a human investigation. We also shouldn't engage this guy, because while he has our covers' names, it is still possible (though unlikely) that he doesn't realize we are demons. If we aren't certain of destroying him, we shouldn't let him see us at all.

1)C. Time is money. 2)EFH. Take out the angel first, get fed, and trash the infrastructure. We’re the superior close combat fighter in the room and we have the drop on a servant of the GM. We’re low enough on Aether to recharge but should have enough for the fight. No reason to leave tools of the GM laying around. Let’s kick over the GM’s sandcastle to keep them busy. Also we like Mabin so we probably shouldn’t tell her name to servants of the GM if we don’t intend on killing them after.

Does siphoning Aether make us vulnerable? Does it draw attention? Like how long does it take? If we don’t deal with the centipede and try to mess around in the basement then I am concerned we’re just giving it a chance to ambush us. If we jump it now the odds appear to be stacked in our favor. Edit: I’d note the super might have narrow instructions just to maintain the building, which could allow for a line of dialogue or manipulation. But we can’t be sure of its programming, and even then it’s likely to blame us correctly for the ongoing destruction. malbogio fucked around with this message at 05:38 on Mar 17, 2018 |

With The Superintendent busy looking at the gauges, you creep over to the gears. There a wet iron smell to them, part rust and part blood. It nauseates you, but you still reach out with one hand at touch one of the gears. Your very touch corrupts the gears, twisting them slightly off kilter, which causes a rattle and a shake and something, somewhere, snaps. The Superintendent twists towards you and screams. It flows forward on its legs and you prepare yourself for a fight. But it passes you, and instead wraps itself around the gear. “Nononono. I am sorry, so sorry my lord. What is wrong, what is broken?” It snatches a miniature Venus di Milo from the pile and transmutes it to blood, tossing aside the base that has remained stone. The gears to not move. The Superintendent screeches again and hunches close to the gear, poking and prodding. You slink back to the counsel of gauges. They are indecipherable to you, though you look over them anyway, committing them to memory. Then you find what you are looking for. An input plug. You press one of your knife-fingers to it and your finger morphs, molding itself to the jack. You slip your finger it and feel a dozen wires snake around your finger and jack in. Aether floods into you. You feel like your entire body is made of ionized ozone. You drink deeply of the waste energy of the machine, you get occasional flashes, nonsense images or sounds as you drink up the Aether. Some are places and sounds that you have no knowledge of, some are personal experiences. 1. What event of your past do you see? (Approval Vote) A. Your Fall and the immediate aftermath. B. A ambush that resulted in the deaths of your old Ring in 1967 C. Something weird Wilhelm encountered in the Black Forest during WWII D. The moment where you started to think of Mabin as more than a cover during Standing Rock. E. Something else. Finally you feel yourself becoming full, straining like an overfilled bladder. You need to pull out, to convince the Infrastructure you are no longer part of it. For a brief, delirious moment you do not want to disconnected, and the Infracture wants to keep you. You panic and consider just ripping yourself out, but keep yourself calm and start the extraction. Which is when The Superintendent starts to speak. “Never before. Never broke before, why why why. Maybe notta accident. Maybe notta break.” It turns and looks through the gloom of the basement. “Where are you, where are you little sister? Are you being a pest?” With lightly speed it flies forward and rams itself into the darkness behind the desk at the opposite end of the room and thrashes around, it’s tail flipping the desk into the air. It can’t find you, but that doesn’t mean you should stick around. You look at a street light that you can just see outside of the window, and zip to it. You drop to the ground and hustle to Kind’s van. As you do so you burn through some of the Aether you just drank in to revert to Mabin. It is an unnatural process and you must focus to make sure that you remain invisible until your Demon parts are put away. When you are Mabin, you pop back into the visible spectrum and hop in the car seat. Kind is sitting in the driver’s seat, her jacket is smoking. Wordlessly Kind turns the ignition and the van starts. You both sit for a moment. At first you assume you are both looking out at the burning building, smoke now coming from all floors. You start to hear sirens and turn to tell Kind to go, but she is already looking at you. Not the building. “Seat. Belt. Please,” Kind says. You scramble to put it on. “Shopping was fun,” you say as she puts the van in gear and pulls forward. You look back and see Moroni - still unconscious. But no Daisy. “What happened?” you ask. “One of those puppet people grabbed her. I was too busy trying to get out myself, I couldn’t help. I’m sorry. I tried.” 2. Do you believe her? F Yes G No H Does it matter? You motion at the smoke drifting off of her, she looks around, notices it for the first time, and focuses for a moment to shut it off. You wave your hand in front of your face to clear the smoke and notice that your hand looks wet. After some examination your entire skin seems oily, like you haven’t bathed in a long time. You knew you glitched out, and are disappointed to find it’s hygiene-related. “Where are we going anyway?” Kind asks. “I need to get cleaned up, and I think we need to talk, figure out how hosed we are, and what we’re doing next. At least rest up” “I know someone,” you say. “We can get a Free Agency place at least.” 3 Who do you know? (Approval) I. Ms. Web - Information broker at Al’s Breakfast in Dinkytown. J. Mr. Close - Leader of one of the oldest Agencies. K. Mr. Nail - Enforcer and thug, as a nice hidden Bolthole. L. John Merrick - Hipster douchebag/cultist/front man for a Demon-owned building 4. How do you know them? (Approval) M They are an ally we’ve known for a while. N We dated them, it ended...badly. O We saved their life, and they hate us for it. P Something else. 5. What will it cost you? (Approval) Q Money R Favors S Information ________________________________________________________________________ Disconnecting from Infrastructure requires four successes on a Wits+Crafts roll. It is an extended action so as long as you keep getting at least one sucess, you keep rolling. Once you fail, you are done and have to take damage or a Condition. I failed on our first roll. But I used our Condition and kept going, so we made it but without that Condition we’d have been boned. We got a Exceptional Success on our roll against the Super when he was looking for us, so I chose to give us that Condition back. Plus we get a beat for resolving it the first time, which pushed us over to another XP. We'll have a chance to spend XP once we get done with this "mission".
