I am gratified by the public polling suggesting strong initial support for the Government.

In that spirit, I ask you, the people - what issues do you want to hear from the SRLF on? We have a number of rallies planned, with subjects from our jobs plan to our plan for foreign relations on the agenda, but as always we want to be sure to address the most pressing issues of the day!

Onwards, Comrades!

SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?
Yam Slacker

Excerpt from a stump speech by Companion Brian Praxis of the Sirta Democratic Union, delivered on a final-day tour across the nation posted:

As you go to the polls tomorrow, ask yourself, 'Am I truly happy with the status quo?' Is business as usual good enough for you? Did the people we sent to parliament last time around Do what needed to be done, when it mattered, in every case? Or are they mired in the past, still fighting the war? Do they have a vision for Sirta's future?

I don't need to tell you who does. You wouldn't be here otherwise, hearing an old man wax lyrical about politics. You know what we want! You know what we stand for! Say it with me, Companions! Fix the cities! Raise up the Countryside! Heal the Nation! And how do we get in position to do these wonderful things? That depends on each and every one of you, on your families, your fellow travellers and co-workers. Reach out to friends and neighbours, reach out to elders and youth, human and AMR, and with one voice, for one cause, for Sirta and all Sirtans, cry Join the Union!

...and to be sure, we have had some stumbles in our quest for a prosperous city here. We expected that those who made massive profits off of the common Sardine would feel it proper that a small portion of their immense prosperity should be collected as a tax to ease your suffering. We unfortunately underestimated the control that the addiction of capitalism, of profit-making had on them.

So they fled. They chose to turn their backs on your plight while still expecting you to be their consumers, their customers or workers. "Pulled a Greene", if you will.

But it's far to easy to continue to put all of the blame of our woes on Vallstein or Greene. They were but symptoms to our chronic disease of capitalism. To truly continue the revolution and bring about a more democratic and fair Sirta, we must change the economic structure from the foundations up! Join the SRLF and join the revolution once more!

During the election, crowds of SDU voters began to adopt a signature hymn as their anthem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN8kGzHH00I

Excerpts from stump speeches delivered by Denver Axo in late November, in...

Panorama

Friends! We have all worked so hard and so diligently to transform ourselves and our society. Now, our valley is safe and prosperous, and our future is ours to decide. I want to thank you so much for gathering here to see me off as I depart to spread the good news of our story and our party. Farewell, until the election concludes! When I return, it will be as a MP, and then we shall all continue to build a marvelous future for ourselves. Take pride in knowing you are the envy of Sirta! Take pride in knowing that ours is the way of the future! Long live Panorama! Long live the SDU and our revolution!

Nielsen's Hill

Companions, we fought for the most precious things in the world in the revolution: freedom and peace. The first we exercise now, and have all pledged to uphold at the cost of our own lives if necessary. But the second remains elusive. We find ourselves plagued by the remnants of an unaccountable and undemocratic system in the SDF, and it and the CLF have understandably refused to begin to trust each other. The SDU pledges to honor the freedom we won for ourselves, and secure the peace through bold action. It is the firm stance of this party that the military has no place in the future of Sirta. It is long past time to abolish all standing armies on this planet, and to pledge ourselves to a process of demilitarization and de-escalation. Are we ready to die? To kill each other once again? Of course not. But the only solution to the constant infighting, the constant worry, the constant paranoia, is to get rid of the whole drat edifice! The TRC is doing its job - if the SDU is able, we will seek to retain DAL in the Ministry of Justice, to make sure it continues to do its job prosecuting murderers and scoundrels. But now we face problems that no gun or army can solve. We once swore oaths to overthrow a tyranny. We must now swear oaths to abandon war, assassination, and intimidation as legitimate courses of action. We will not find peace otherwise.

Prosperity

It is the experience of every rural Sirtan to know what it is like to be written off by society. We know what it is to be looked upon as a curiosity, as relics or accidents that are condemned to a slow death. In this regard, my home of Panorama was fortunate - everyone there owes a tremendous debt to the kindness and wisdom of Prime Minister Luxemburg, who responded to my petition for aid with a pledge to designate our rail connection repairs as a priority zone. But others, Prosperity among them, have not even been given this brief attention.

Companions, for the first time since the Revolution, you will have political representation at the national level that is committed to improving the lives of rural Sirtans. You only have to examine my record - I drafted the legislation to make an entirely new Ministry of Agriculture, complete with offices for establishing new agricultural enterprises and extending loans and grants to rural communities. The SDU pledges, and I pledge, to devote its energies to elevating you, to helping you, to connecting you to the bounty of society and every part of the future good life enjoyed by the rest of the planet. Under the SDU, we will continue to pass legislation that lifts up the countryside. Your voice will be heard!

Feldspar

Part of this lifting up must be the expansion of our society into the unexplored parts of our planet, and settling in new and beautiful places. We will explore the deep reaches of the earth, the ocean floor, the great equatorial forest belts, and every other wilderness. We will catalog new places, new species, new resources, and new systems. We only have an idea of a fraction of the bounty of the planet.

Lucky Break

And with the Public Lands Act - which I wrote and made sure passed - we already have democratic control over where, how, and how quickly we manage this exploration and settlement. We can also rely on another of my personal creations - the Sirtan Survey Corps. No longer do we have to entrust the exploration of our own planet to private interests, driven by the profit motive. We now have a professional body of experts, driven only by their dedication to science and ecology, on the cutting-edge of exploration and surveying. Observing their research, we can redefine settlement as a process perfectly in tune with a commitment to conservation and ecology - we will not be exploring for things to exploit or plunder, but new systems we can harmoniously co-exist with, in order to enjoy their natural productive capabilities.

Lavintia's Mark

At the same time, we cannot limit our view to our own system. Already, our friends and neighbors wait anxiously for us to rejoin the wider international community. The Outer Alliance has extended a hand in friendship, and the SDU pledges to grasp it and let ourselves be pulled up alongside them. You can check our record - the SDU MPs were the sole drafters of the recently passed Perpetual Friendship And Foreign Exhibition Act. We will apply for partial membership, not compromising our sovereignty or our vision of an egalitarian, democratic society but engaging in trade and scientific research. It will also bring, hopefully, a great deal of foreign aid, and the SDU pledges to use a portion of any of this possible money to fund new hospitals and schools, and to expand the basic essentials program of the Ministry of Interior.

Topaz

Topaz is a fortunate city. As we settle the rest of the planet and engage in expanding the productive forces of our society, Topaz, with its industrial might, stands to prosper and grow even richer. But it is precisely for that reason that the SDU must unequivocally pledge its commitment to seeing those riches flow into the hands of their rightful owners, and not a class of parasites!

Companions, we in the SDU are revolutionary communists by any measure. Labor and nature are the sources of all our material existence - and yet alienated labor and alienated nature produce a horror: a capitalist society where profits go to those who hold a magic deed called "private property," while those whose labor is alienated lose their time, their freedom, and their sense of meaning. Our society has reached the stage of revolution where armed conflict between standing armies is neither productive nor welcome among most. But we have yet to overthrow the invisible chains of capital. The SDU sees communism as a society structured around love of others - but our communism is also a hammer that we will use to smash our chains apart in a second, peaceful revolution of workers and farmers. The SDU pledges that to the best of its ability, it will encourage this second revolution, and never accept that there is a mutual harmony between labor and capital.

Our socialism is made up of three parts: First, we recognize that society must be structured so that the productive forces work first towards the benefit of all. Second, we recognize that the productive forces of society must be expanded to provide an easier life for the benefit of all, eventually reducing the need for work entirely. Third, we recognize that this growth of productive forces is ultimately bound and limited by an ecological limit, and that the second part must be conducted in honor of the third, so that we are not merely replacing the poverty of capitalism with a poverty following the collapse of our biosphere. With these three principles, our party pledges to conduct itself as your advocate, that we are answerable to you, and that we are to be judged by how well we further the aims of the working class.

Workers of Topaz, the SDU is your ally, your home, your weapon, your Union!

Opal

But not all cities are as fortunate as Topaz. You, the citizens of Opal, know what it is to live in a city that has turned more predatory and savage than any wilderness. Despite the best efforts of the new police forces, organized crime syndicates still murder, steal, and embezzle. Your woes are shared by the nation: I have seen the figures, and something approaching 40 percent of our monthly national budget is siphoned off by criminal elements. But we in the countryside do not have to suffer as you suffer - where you see gangs, corruption, and alienation, we experience clean living, fresh air, and the bounty of nature. It is the pledge of the SDU that we will continue the campaigns against crime and corruption at every level. But how long will you have to wait for those campaigns to finish? How long can you live in a battlefield, among squalor, violence, and unemployment? It is the pledge of the SDU that we in the countryside shall pledge to do our best to share what little we have with you: if you wish, come live with us, and we will give you what we have. I am happy to announce that starting next month, Panorama will begin construction on housing for 500 families from Opal who wish to emigrate to our town. Other parties may speak of indivisible bonds between rural and urban - how many have pledged to house you, feed you, clothe you, welcome you, Opal?

The SDU pledges to begin to move volunteering families to rural settlements, to secure them employment in their new homes, and to help them integrate into their new communities and ways of life.

Sard

I am always humbled to find myself in the nation's capital. My home of Panorama is so small and isolated by comparison - and yet, outrageously, in many ways Panorama has been managed infinitely more capably than Sard! How is this possible? Your own Local Assembly adopted most of the provisions that I personally wrote for Panorama, and both embarked upon a transition to a more equitable society at roughly the same time. But Panorama is fine, and growing - and Sard is impoverished, and in chaos! Even if we only compare revenues, Panorama's have grown by something over 60 percent - and Sard's have shrunk to little more than a quarter of what they were one year ago! What has happened? How could the SRLF have let our own capital disintegrate like this? Why did they not implement stricter capital controls before they acted to abolish private property? Why have they not used the mortgage system I implemented to allow for the immediate operation of revenue-producing industries? What is the plan for Sard? Where is your leadership? The SDU pledges itself to solving the problem of restoring Sard to its former glory and prosperity, while upholding the values of its socialist future - we will author a plan that provides detailed and concrete steps towards re-establishing Sard's revenues. Already, I have done what I can by passing legislation to begin enormous construction projects for the embassy parks - let us give thanks to the Hesperideans for already pledging 120 million NSC to construction in Sard - but it is not nearly sufficient. The SDU pledges to walk you safely to the other side of this chasm!

Sapphire

Biotechnology is our heritage and our future. Not only does it hold the greatest promise of foreign investment, but it is the tool we will use to be able to expand our productive capacities while remaining true to our ecological values. Thus, the SDU pledges to restore and expand our biotech industry, to encourage foreign investment in biotech, and to restore the Sirtan Biotechnological Institute, the pride of Sapphire, to its former prestige. However, as the key to our future and the shared symbol of our past, the people must retain control of our biotechnology industry. Thus, the SDU pledges to renegotiate the Rose Accord to provide a more equitable partnership between Sirta and the Hesperides. The SDU also pledges to nationalize the biotechnology industry. Our most precious and promising resource will be owned by all, be accountable to all, and produce for all. In addition, the SDU pledges a general stance of encouraging foreign investment into government enterprises, so that foreign capital is closely monitored and not allowed to, accidentally or otherwise, re-energize a declining and destructive capitalist class.

Peridot

Our future is an ecological one. Whatever great strides we make towards a society where all physical needs are met and no suffers from poverty, malnutrition, or neglect, must be balanced by a recognition that we live as part of a natural system and are ourselves a part of nature.

Soon, we will encounter an opportunity for growth. It will make a certain sense for us to degrade a part of our environment to make our lives easier. And here our society will come to a fork in the road. On the right fork, we will see forests cut down and burned, topsoil destroyed, waterways and air polluted, radioactive waste buried underground, and all of society engaged in a poisoning of the biosphere. The SDU totally rejects this principle of sacrificing our biosphere for the sake of uncontrolled, undirected growth.

We will take society down the left fork. Here, our growth will be managed, directed, and capped if we cannot proceed without further degrading our home. It is the bone-deep principle of the SDU that we reject the principle of land as a commodity to be consumed. We must begin to see it as part of ourselves and our communities, and treat it with the love and respect we would give to our families. The long-term success of our society will be measured by how harmoniously we exist within our environment. To this end, the SDU pledges to commit to establishing a Ministry of Ecology to direct all economic growth according to these ecological principles. Humanity severed from the land, from nature, from history, is a hideous sickness. The Sirta Democratic Union and all its members pledge themselves to maintaining our connection to the harmony of our natural systems.

Amber

There are two parts to any proper solution to any problem. The first is the practical - what is the problem, what do I know to work, how do I apply it? Let's use the example of corruption in government posts like customs officials. I know there are customs officials who line their pockets at the expense of others. I know that higher wages, more workplace democracy, and stricter supervision all help to reduce corruption. But I have only solved half of the problem - it is also a moral failing on the part of the custom official! Humanity is shaped and can be degraded by economic forces, yes - but we are not automatons, and we have the freedom to choose between good and evil! A moral person may be poor, and may also refuse to indulge in corruption, in theft, extortion, or murder. This is the second part of the proper solution - the moral. Whatever legislation we pass, whatever algorithms we may entrust our futures to, whatever wages we lift, whatever business we re-order to be employee-owned, whatever private properties we abolish, all will be useless if we as Sirtans cannot rediscover our sense of justice, our compassion, and our dedication to working for the betterment of all. Together, we must all work to restructure our society along economically and morally just lines. The SDU pledges to lead by example in this regard, and every MP and official shall hold themselves to the highest standards of professional conduct, transparency, and honesty. We will have prosperity! And we will also have compassion, hope, and love.

SRLF Rally in Panorama

...and I would like to congratulate all of you, Mr. Axo included of course, for making use of the People's Assembly Act and working to build a more democratic Panorama that works to support everyone, and not just for a few people! However, we can't just have Panorama free. What is freedom in Panorama when the people in Opal are held in bondage under the chains of capital and crime? So that is exactly what the SRLF has been doing: working with limited resources to ensure gains in prosperity across every community in Sard to the working class and the struggling poor. I know Mr. Axo is very popular here (and for good reason, mind you!), but I do want to make a few comments here as they were.

I hold no ill feelings towards Mr. Axo. As party members together we helped to usher in a lot of insightful and meaningful legislation together - even while he wasn't an MP. I don't like to take credit for much - it's not really my thing, nor my whole point of getting into politics in the first place. Every legislation I try to introduce, especially the Peoples Assembly act, is to provide the Sirtan the means to decide their own destiny together, directly with their own community. The more that Parliament can do to ensure Sirtans have the ability and time to make those decisions the better. The SRLF's highest goal is to ensure that power is distributed solely to the whole of the people, and not to a select few. Imagine that, a political party that is actively working to reduce it's direct power over the people! We've been rather open to various ways and methods to obtain that goal, which is why we were surprised that Mr. Axo decided to start his own party. The SRLF was certainly willing and able to accommodate Mr. Axo's ideas and plans, and for him to have a greater stake in party affairs. Our platforms have differences of course, but not to that great of an extent compared to other parties. I would just like for you to consider why someone would spurn such collaboration to strike out on their own. Our doors are open to Mr. Axo and we are willing to call him a comrade once more, though he appears to be keen on trying to shut them himself.

Long time no see.
Election Debate (November 3062):

The date is the 26th of November 3062. Most Sirtans are glued to their SCN interfaced devices, their attention held by a single channel playing a video feed. The feed shows the floor of Parliament, which, instead of MPs and their staff, is filled with an enthusiastic audience of reporters and common citizens. The first election debate in decade is about to start.

Those present are Prime Minister Luxemburg, representing the SRLF, Denver Axo representing the SDU, Lenore Hughes representing Dawn, Minister of Justice Victor Knapfstein representing the DAL, Minister of Interior Stefan Borisov representing the FDG and Lillian Ford representing UCS. The SnnP opted not to participate in this debate.

The moderator is Mary Violet, renowned talk show host.

Moderator: Welcome to the debate! First, we should go around, and each representative will offer their party's vision for the Sirtan people. Naturally, I am obliged to call on our Prime Minister as the first.

Luxemburg: Thank you, Mary. I'd just like to say how honored I am to be here tonight, representing both my party and my people. Sirta has a tragic past. First exploited as a Solar Union colony, and then whored out to both foreign and domestic capital by Vallstein and Greene. We fought for decades to end this exploitation, and the SRLF says "never again." Never again will we allow the Sirtan people to be bound to the wills of capital, whether the chains are iron or gold. We will build a Sirta where the great riches of our planet are used to provide for ALL Sirtans. Poverty, homelessness, crime, all the modern ills of society do no need to exist. There are more than enough resources to provide for all, they are merely misallocated. The SRLF will build a forward-looking, equitable Sirta where every Sirtan has full control of the fruits of their labor, a Sirta that is for the many, not the few.

Moderator: Thank you, Prime Minister. Mr. Axo, what is your party's vision?

Axo: Even after the end of the civil war, Sirta finds itself with much to do. Our infrastructure is only beginning to be fully repaired; unemployment remains catastrophically high; despite the valiant efforts of our new police forces, crime claims more than forty percent of our national revenues. There are many visions for the future of our society, but the Sirta Democratic Union's is the most far-reaching and comprehensive. Our future is one where we live in a harmonious balance with our environment; where we are not alienated from either our labor or our nature; where growth is tempered by our ecology; where we have dedicated ourselves to moral growth as well as economic growth; where we exist peacefully and productively with our neighbors; where we have abolished all armies and live in peace without fear of civil war, dictatorship, or exploitation, whether of the land or of mankind. The SDU's record of bold, creative vision married to principles of socialism, peace, ecology, and justice speaks for itself. The formal abolition of slavery, the SCA, the SSA, the Public Lands Act, the Perpetual Friendship exhibition parks, and the Ministry of Agriculture are only the first steps towards this better future.

Luxemburg: All, I might add, accomplishments of the SRLF.

Moderator: Thank you, Mr.Axo. Prime Minister, it is not yet your turn to speak. Let us maintain decorum here. Now, what do you have to tell us, Lenore?

Lenore: My friends, this past year saw a myriad of improvements and efforts. Our party's laws and initiatives have begun to pave the way to a future where no one has to suffer alone, abandoned by the rest of society. Together with the other parties in our coalition, we have made strides towards a better, happier and more compassionate society. I trust in you, the Sirtan people, to realize it. We merely want to help you in attaining that ambition.

Moderator: Thank you, Ms. Hughes. What say you, Justice Minister? What does your party offer us?

Victor: There is only one thing we are here for - justice! We can't allow te struggle to end here, with a powerless fig leaf like the TRC being all that purports to punish the hideous criminals responsible for the atrocities of the old regime. There can be no pause, no rest, while all of those thieves, butchers and bootlickers are allowed to roam free on our streets, openly mocking their victims!

Moderator: Thank you, Minister. Ms. Ford, what does your party have to say for itself?

Lillian: Our party stands for effective, evidence-based policymaking. My predecessor has done much in the realms of tax enforcement and banking regulation. We hope to bring a clear, sober head to other areas of policy as well. No ideology, no matter how ardently advocated or elegantly constructed, can bring about results without a clear understanding of practical conditions in the outside world. We hope to enhance the power and prominence of a well-organized, competent and incorruptible civil service.

Moderator: Thank you, Ms. Ford. Last but far from least, what are your thoughts, Minister of Interior?

Stefan: Hrm. I think that our party is the only one to fully comprehend the precarious state of our economy. Many of the others here peddle in dreams and bright ideas without a proper grasp of the reality around them. That reality is this - our economy is in a bad place, people are starving, homeless, poor and unemployed. Our economy can't improve without outside investment and a clear long-term plan for future development. That is what my party offers, what my party has always offered. Vote for us, if you wish to see a reinvigorated Sirta with lasting stability and prosperity.

Moderator: Thank you, Minister. It is now time for the representatives to question each other and argue over core issues. Go ahead.

Luxemburg: Thank you, Mary. I'd like to lead with a policy announcement, actually. The SRLF understands that the economic depression has hit certain communities, particularly in rural areas, harder than others. Although we previously lacked the resources, during the next Parliament the SRLF would like to introduce a slate of comprehensive development grants, especially for rural communities, as well as fully funding primary and secondary education in all communities of Sirta.

Axo: I'd like to address the matter raised by the Prime Minister. While I was a member of the SRLF while I drafted the legislation I mentioned, and while I am grateful for my comrades who voted for the legislation to ensure passage, none of the initiatives contained therein were ever even on the agenda of the party before I drafted those bills. Just as the worker should not have to alienate a portion of their labor to a boss, those ideas certainly don't belong to the SRLF in perpetuity, and they came from myself and the MP candidates of the SDU. I'm thankful for our fruitful cooperation, and look forward to working with them in the future.

Luxemburg: As to Mr. Axo's concerns, while it is true that he played a hand in drafting much of the accomplishments his party is now claiming, he can hardly claim responsibility for the votes and input provided by the 18 SRLF MP's who actually enacted the legislation. And while we are very thankful for his input, we do not believe it fair to claim the entirety of the accomplishments for his own party.

Axo: I am glad that more parties are beginning to follow the SDU's lead of calling to raise up the countryside. Interior Minister, what is the FDG's plan for directing foreign investment in a safe and responsible manner? You are surely aware of the potentially disruptive or dislocating effects an enormous infusion of foreign money might have on our society. How do we make sure that while accepting aid from places like the Hesperides, we do not turn ourselves into a colony of theirs?

Stefan: Hmph...A colony, you say? I don't recall ceding our sovereignty to outside actors being an aspect of our development plan. I don't see why encouraging foreign investment, and having some guarantees that those investors will not end up cheated or have their investment taken away from them, would lead to any negative effect for Sirtan citizens. On that note, I would like to ask you Mr. Axo, regarding your own plans in that sphere. Are you quite certain that nationalizing the primary investment target - our biotech industry - would benefit the Sirtan economy? I may posses an infinitely more meager understanding than yourself, but surely nationalization will drastically reduce the incentive for foreign investment? Please, explain it so even I can understand, why is something like this beneficial to the countless unemployed Sirtans that still remember our industry's past glory days? I can't quite keep up with all of these new ideas, you see.

Axo: I am very certain it will. Not only will we be able to direct research and growth in the industry as we see fit, the elimination of inefficient competing private interests will lower production costs, ensure a more faithful observance of environmental standards, streamline administration, and let us choose how, when, and where we expand the industry. Furthermore, it eliminates the headache for foreign investors of having to pick and choose which firm to deal with or risk their investment in, replacing a jungle of private owners with one owner - the government and people of Sirta. Rather than depress investment, this restructuring and revitalization of the industry will make it clear that we are serious about the field's future potential.

Stefan: Typically, investors seek to diversify their funding across multiple firms. Not to mention, they are likely to get much greater returns on investment from private actors rather than an entire state.

Axo: Considering they are getting no return on investment now, I'm sure that any increase will be welcomed. And nationalization does not mean a lack of diversity. The SDU is committed to local control and input in any nationalization scheme - pilot programs, for instance, for experimental technology run by certain subsidiaries in certain towns, or boutique manufacturing specialization in different cities. Any future investor will certainly not lack for choice. In addition, the backing of the state will mean a safe, stable, and trustworthy place for investors to place their money.

Stefan: We may sometimes forget, but to outside observers, our country is neither safe nor stable nor trustworthy. For a detached observer, we have just exited a tumultuous civil war and a couple of decades filled with government corruption. Why would they trust us now?

Axo: Not only have we proven our collective dedication to rejoining the foreign community through legislation like the Perpetual Friendship Act and its attendant long-term construction projects, but we, by speaking here today, have proven our commitment to democracy and a rejection of corruption. We could have shrugged our shoulders at the revelation that so many high-ranking officials were involved in corruption. Instead, the police force pioneered by the wise Minister of Interior Security have arrested them, the TRC has pledged to investigate the claims against the leader of our Opposition, our Parliament has been dissolved, and now we are involved in an election which is already looking like it will have one of the highest turnouts in Sirtan history. We may have a long way to go, but the signs should encourage every observer.

Moderator: I think that's enough on that topic for now. Why don't we move to some other question? Ms. Ford, do you have anything to ask the other representatives?

Lillian: Naturally. I am very curious about Mr. Axo's ambitious rural resettlement program. Say, Denver, you live in Panorama, right? The same Panorama that's been cut off from rail transport for years and been resource starved and isolated as a result? If so, how can you want to subject other people to that? While the link to Panorama will soon be fixed, how can you even consider new settlements and vast resettlement efforts in the current state of our country? Are you envisioning Sirta as a confederation of tiny isolated communities?

Axo: Well, considering Panorama has, in less than a year, provided itself with a university, a world-class research lab, a food distribution system that feeds all, free and clean residential power, the most democratic and communal labor system on the planet, and the most holidays, all without being connected to anything by rail, I'd say plenty of people would love to be subjected to its rural ways. The rural resettlement program will be, first of all, entirely opt-in. Currently, rural communities lack money, labor, infrastructure, and attention. City dwellers lack space and opportunity. Moving willing families out of overcrowded and dangerous cities into settlements eager for new infusions of talent and money will not stress our economy, but ease it. In addition, the varying population of each rural settlement means that the number of people moving may not even have to be very great at first. In the case of, say, Prosperity, even a hundred new families and perhaps a million NSC would represent an enormous investment.

Lillian: And those funds would come from where, exactly?

Axo: From a reduction of the Defense budget, from foreign aid, from very slight pruning of programs deemed to have sufficient funding, from patriotic donations, from the sale of government bonds, and from the Ministry of Agriculture budget.

Lillian: I see. Just to be clear, you are advocating for directing the majority of funds towards rural communities, at the expense of programs benefiting the rest of the population? Even though the rural population is less than a fourth of the whole? Then, you intend to graciously offer urban residents the privilege of getting help from the government they fund and put their trust in, if they merely choose to abandon everything they know and move to the countryside?

Axo: No. A major positive for this plan is that it requires a relatively small portion of the national budget. As I recall, there were formerly no funds earmarked for rural development, specifically. Any increase will have an outsized benefit. The cities must also undergo their own development and revitalization. But as the SDU has a plan for both, and the UCS is a lobbyist group for a small group of bureaucrats with no plans for anything, the concern over figures is to be expected.

Lillian: Of course the concern over figures is to be expected. We are the party of evidence and properly considered policy, rather than a party of promoting half-formed ideas that sound nice to our people back home.

Moderator: That's enough on that, I think.

Axo:What exactly is the UCS vision of the future?

Lillian: Is your memory going already, Denver? A shame, for such a young age. I only just outlined our vision at the start of this debate, mere minutes ago. I quote: "We hope to enhance the power and prominence of a well-organized, competent and incorruptible civil service."

Axo: Very inspiring.

Lillian: I would rather have a relatively mundane goal ever-present in its importance, than delude myself by chasing impossible dreams shrouded by deliberate ambiguity.

Axo: It's alright. You can leave the dreams of the future to the SDU.

Lillian: Dreams is something you have in bed, my dear fashion magnate.

Axo: That may be the UCS position. In the SDU, we make dreams come true.

Moderator: That's enough of that argument, I think. Justice Minister, do you have anything to add?

Victor: There's really only one goal I have in this debate. I want to ask all present to commit to our common struggle for justice by pledging to support our TJC bill in Parliament to institute a body capable of doing more than handing out slaps on the wrist. Will you pledge at least that much?

Axo: What do you mean by more than slaps on the wrist?

Victor: The most the TRC can do, earnest though its members may be, is to extract piddly financial fees and refer the case to court. I don't see how their presence does anything to truly punish the blatant atrocities of the old regime. So, will you pledge to support our bill?

Axo: I can't pledge anything without a knowledge of the specifics. We are, after all, determined to abolish the death penalty. But I support the TRC and pledge to give it anything it requires to fulfill its duties. We are also completely behind the ongoing campaigns of the Justice Ministry to bring the crimes of former regime officials to light. The SDU supports the Ministry of Justice remaining in the hands of the DAL in any future coalition government. I hope that satisfies as a statement of good faith and solidarity. Justice must be done, yes.

Victor: You already know the specifics. We submitted this bill once before, but Parliament seemed uninterested in justice then.

Luxemburg: I believe that it is important to note, Minister, that the previous time your bill was submitted it had the support of the SRLF. We have many members who directly suffered at the hands of the old Regime, and support measures that would ensure that those who perpetrated those crimes would be brought to justice.

Victor: Do you pledge to support it again then, our brave comrades-in-arms? Yes or no?

Luxemburg: I believe our track record on these matters should speak for itself, Minister.

Axo: Yes. The SDU supports it.

Victor: Is that a yes or a no, Prime Minister?

Luxemburg: We supported it before, and the SRLF shall support it again.

Victor: Good. I am glad we have strong allies in our struggle for justice. Now, what of the rest of you?

Lenore: No. I will not, can not, condone the creation of an unaccountable body with near unlimited authority. That will put us on a dark path that I don't wish to see our country going down again. Your stubborn refusal to compromise may have served you well in the insurgency, but that struggle is over now. Our citizens are looking to us to provide them with a better life, a better society and a better future. We can't fail them in that because of our own grudges and fantasies of revenge. We have to ask ourselves, why are we here, on this stage? My answer is simple - to present the people with the hope that they've desperately lacked, and to ask for their trust in bringing that hope into reality. I don't know what your answer is, but that's for you to contend with alone, Minister.

Lillian: Appointing your friends to a closed committee with control over people's lives may satisfy your power fantasy and sate your need for an inner purpose, Minister, but it is the farthest thing from justice that can exist in this world. My party won't lend its aid to such a farce.
Stefan: I don't see any particular deficiency in the current TRC and justice system. There is no need for such heavy-handed measures.

Victor: No need? Is that all you have to say after elected officials turn out to be greedy vultures that are likely to get off with paying a measly fine?

Moderator: That's enough for this topic, I think. Prime Minister, many are wondering about the growing rift between your party and the SDF. Can you outline your intentions on that front, should you win the election?

Luxemburg: The fact of the matter is that the SDF played a crucial part in the end stages of the Revolution. But we are no longer in a situation where the level of militancy and armament that the SDF had been allowed to maintain under the previous Regime is necessary. We have no intention of making rash decisions, but as with all institutions the SDF will have to change with the times, and right now, things are peaceful. A military is an essential part of the state, but when there are no enemies, a certain amount of the swords should be beaten into plowshares.

Moderator: What of the speech made by your Minister of Defence characterizing the SDF as a dangerous hostile element? Do you stand behind his words?

Luxemburg: As things stand, the SDF holds a large amount of power and has been trained along a military doctrine that specifically targeted many of the people who now make up Parliament. Whilst Comrade Radek's statements were perhaps ill advised, I think it would be foolish to treat them as entirely apolitical. A measured, reasonable decrease in the power of the SDF, in keeping with the peaceful atmosphere, would make the position of the Parliament seem less precarious, and hopefully lead the way to more open communication and co-operation in the future.

Victor: Cooperation? Are you just going to bow down to threats from these uniformed thugs? The thought that state sanctioned murderers hold our government at gunpoint is very frightening.

Luxemburg: The fact of the matter, Victor, is that we now exist in a post-Regime society. Whilst both of our parties are committed to bringing those who committed crimes against the people in the name of the Regime to justice, we cannot simply declare that anyone who had any involvement whatsoever should be strung up in the streets. The SDF were part of the revolution, and deserve to be treated as such.

Victor: Oh, they were part of the revolution alright. The revolution of the front door to the building housing Central Command. They are murderers who sought to escape justice. Nothing more, nothing less.

Moderator: While I would be glad to witness further discussion on this and many other topics, we are approaching the end of our scheduled time. We'll wrap things up with a final comment from each representative. Prime Minister, you go first again.

Luxemburg: During this last session of Parliament, the SRLF has sought to deliver on it's campaign promises. We've started to take action against the organized crime that blights our cities, bring money and labour back into the hands of the people, and put an end to those lingering injustices brought about by the previous Regime. Every step we take is in the name of the people of Sirta, and though the road is long, we are carried by the will of the people. We've only just begun, and don't intend to stop now.

Moderator: Thank you. Mr. Axo?

Axo: The Sirta Democratic Union is the only party that combines a commitment to justice, socialism, equality, and ecology with the talent and energy necessary to convert our collective dreams into a reality for ourselves and our descendants. We stand on the cusp of a future of peace and prosperity - join the Union and let us work, not for individual profit, but for the betterment of everyone and the realization of our common dreams.

Moderator: Thank you, Mr. Axo. Justice Minister?

Victor: I have said everything I needed to say. It's very simple, either you wish for justice for the regime's hundreds of thousands of victims or you don't, and look the other way as known criminals roam free.

Lillian: Nah, it just seems simple when you walk around with blood constantly rising to your head and have delusions of self-importance.

Moderator: This isn't the time for that, Ms. Ford. Instead, what is your closing comment?

Lillian: This debate only further reinforces the prevailing notions of using wild fantasies as policy guides. Don't fall for populism. Vote for the party that values correct information and competence above all.

Moderator: Interior Minister?

Stefan: Our economy is our lifeline. Don't let it fall to pieces in pursuit of empty promises and misguided protectionist sentiments. Vote FDG for long-term prosperity and stability.

Moderator: Lastly, Lenore?

Lenore: We have spent the past hours granting you our respective visions for the future. I trust you, my friends, to pick a future filled with hope over one filled with internal strife or more of what you see in the present. Remember, we are all in this together.

It is hoped that the PM's words of reconcilliation with the SDF will be taken in the spirit offered, that our society only so recently freed from the scourge of conflict will not see an unnecessary return...

From Remarks at the inauguration of the Sirtan Anti-Corruption Office (SACO), a new division of the NFP posted:

My friends, we have made great progress in reducing the omnipresent scourge of corruption across our society, but we recognize that there is much work yet to be done. We have done away with the Great Corrupt Greene and his immediate sycophants, but the shadow he cast was long, and much rot was allowed to spread under it. The goal of the Sirtan Anti-Corruption Office is twofold. First, it will centralize the varying efforts of the NFP to combat the pernicious weed of corruption and graft. Second, it provides a direct point of contact for citizens who come face to face with the evil itself. Those who, for example, encounter the infamous local official expecting "renumeration" will now have a welcoming place to turn, so that the remaining bad actors in our society can be identified and removed.

While some may address the problems of corruption in our society with vague platitudes about the nature of man, the Sirtan Revolutionary Liberation Front acts. Now we ask your support to ensure we're in the best possible condition to continue to do so.

Minister Bookchin, would you please respond to the statement Axo made in Prosperity that implied the SRLF was playing favorites among the rural communities?

Yes I certainly can. It's patently false that we are attempting to play favorites among the communities we reside in. We believe in providing support to all communities, but we also do believe that the communities themselves know of their urgent priorities and know of the ways to address Parliament for support. Perhaps due to Axo's influence and reach he was able to make Parliament more aware of certain needs in Panorama than other communities did. I would like to address that, but not by the SRLF deciding everything to do in Prosperity, or Opal, or Venderstookburg et al. We need to ensure that the representatives in every local community have a voice so that Parliament can direct resources or legislation to the matters at hand. I thank Mr. Axo for bringing up that point.

What I don't agree with is his implications and intent to divide the communities like children attempting to covet the most of their parent's attention. The community of Prosperity should not be jealous of Panorama, or vice versa. This is not a competition. We are in this together, and we should never consider ourselves truly free while one child starves in Opal or is denied an education in Nielsen's Hill or has crime festering in Peridot. We are in this together, and our salvation lies with working and collaborating together.

Now, I'm sure I don't have to tell everyone here how important education is. Hell, I'm pretty sure that if I did I'd just get eye rolls and polite laughter, considering that I know at least three people here who have personally seen me unbelivably drunk when I was supposed to be doing an essay. But then again it was for Kolagon so it didn't matter anyway. [pause for laughter] But in all seriousness, I cannot impress enough on how important the work that the SRLF has been doing. And I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but we've got this far and still have so much further to go. The revolution doesn't end until we have not only got rid of the remnants of the injustices that the Regime caused, but when we have achieved equality, liberty and protection for every single man, woman and child on this planet. I'm doing my part, and I hope that everyone here will do what they can, from volunteering in one of the many projects that the SRLF has established since parliament began, to even something as small as voting in the election. Vote for a better tomorrow, Vote SRLF. Thank you. Now let's get back to the important things! Bar's open for the next two hours!

"...and of course the SRLF recognizes the vital role that Biotech plays in our national prosperity and interest. Our party supports its return to prominence and a full reversal of Greene's neglect. We will do everything we can to work with other governments to bring rational, fair investment back to Sirtan Biotech. We will support a full renewal of local investment, and a full review of the regulations passed under Greene. With you, we will bring Sirta back to the forefront of research, and restore your cities' rightful place as the home of the best minds in a scientific field.

With your help we will relieve our communities of the burdens of joblessness and economic malaise, and ..."

Host: "...people's anger are certainly understandable. Why the biggest criminals of them all are beyond justice. Vallstein is dead and Greene has escaped beyond our reach to who knows wh-"

Saint-Just: "No. I'm sorry to interrupt but I don't agree with that."

Host: "Don't agree with what?"

Saint-Just: "Greene is not beyond our reach. No one is beyond the reach of justice if we remain dedicated to its pursuit."

Host: "Commissioner, are you making a campaign promise to try to apprehend Greene?"

Saint-Just: "No. I am stating a fact. We will capture Greene. He will answer for his crimes."

Host: "Well! That's quite a note to leave off on! Tomorrow night: Are popular evening entertainment programs dumbing down the conversation with ridiculous antics? We'll have the head of Concerned Parents of Sirta and the host of Evening Slime Time on to debate the issue. Same time, same channel!"

Discussion in Feldspar between Frederick Hope and residents

"I know not everyone will immediately be on board with the idea of having troublesome city kids coming here, but... I put this place forward for a reason. I am sure that some of you remember that month during the revolution. I'd been shot, and the Harsteins had found me in a field. Grabbed me, put me in the back of their car and brought me here to patch up. Part of me, part of me wanted to drop out there and then, heal up and stay here in Feldspar and settle down. I still do. One day, once I feel like I've done my part for this planet, I'd like to live in this wonderful town that I grew to love in that month. And I know that every single child sent here would feel the same. These kids, in the cities there's so much poo poo left over from the old regime, so much violence and corruption. Out here? There's hope for kids like that to break the cycle, find that they have choice of what they want to be. I want these kids to come here not to get them out of the city, but to get them to discover what I did that month. And I know that they will. All of us, in the cities and out here, we've still got so much work to do, and I hope that with your support, we can keep on walking that road to recovery. Now, I hear that John's got a fresh load out of the oven and dear god you just can't get pastries like that in Sard."

Excerpt from one of Prime Minister Luxemburg's speeches on the SRLF's SCN channel

quote:

...and so I say to you, where have all these jobs that our opponents claim they will bring back "gone?" Nowhere! The laboratories, the factories, the farms and mines and mills, they're all still right where we left them! And yet, despite no change in the material resources available, millions are no longer permitted to work. The jobs are still there, the capital has not moved. It has merely become unprofitable for the ruling class to allow you to use "their" property, so they would rather shutter their factories and laboratories and let us starve! It is utter insanity. The FDG will crow about "pragmatism" and "efficiency", but how in all seven hells can a system that actively prohibits millions of willing and eager workers from exerting useful labor be "efficient"? The market economy doesn't care about you, or me, or even the abstract idea of maximizing human flourishing. It doesn't even care about its vaunted efficiency! It is fundamentally constructed to maximize the profit extracted for the bourgeois class and nothing else. So, you want your jobs back? They're already here. They never left. We just have to go take them.
