Presumably, either they let the Chinese government control the Catholic Clergy directly or the government is going to do all it can to remove or otherwise disrupt Catholicism in the county.

Wonderful, "religious intolerance" must be one of those Chinese characteristics that keep getting mentioned.

Lmao at conflating the loving Papacy with religious freedom

The papacy making deals with secular powers is not new, and it's certainly not infringement of religion

I'm from a Catholic family and anything that undermines the mother church is good IMO. The arch bishop of Sacramento is a real rear end in a top hat by all accounts I've heard.

Why would they put an archbishop in Sacramento, of all places?

Sure, that reasoning is clear, but they don't do that in, like, Albany.

Oh, never mind, it's not true, it's part of San Francisco: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Sacramento

Oh. Maybe it's just a bishopric then. Anyway the important part of the anecdote is that they owned a commonly used empty lot in my town, and eventually decided to fence it off and offer it for sale for $1 million. In an old lumber town.

Can someone shed some light on this? https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-credit/china-to-bar-people-with-bad-social-credit-from-planes-trains-idUSKCN1GS10S

This all seems lovely, but the part about train restrictions coupled with punishment of unpaid fines seems particularly bad and also incredibly counterproductive. Poor working class people are often forced to take intermunicipal trains due to lack of regional jobs and being unable to afford cars (not to mention being forced to use multiple bus routes after having to take a train). If they have any debt (which they often do), barring them from using trains can effectively kneecap their ability to repay it. Planes probably wouldn't be as much of a factor, though I guess it could potentially be an obstacle if they reach a middle class job and are forced to attend seminars elsewhere in the country.

the more important and frequently implemented provisions of this system are for businesses. the stuff for individuals keeps getting disproportionately reported on in the west for obvious reasons

the restrictions are pretty much reserved for repeat offenders and there are financial hardship exceptions iirc. honestly this isn't any different from losing your driver's license after not paying traffic tickets

Looking professional when committing genocide is essential. This is mostly achieved by using a beret.

Olive drab colour ensures the genocider will remain hidden from his prey until it's too late for them to do anything.

A patriotic Chinese documentary is setting box office records with its stirring tales of the nation’s heroic military modernisation and awe-inspiring technological achievements.

But the drawcard for Triumph of the Will Amazing China is not popular stars, clever plot twists or gripping cinematography. Instead, the film’s takings have been boosted by mandatory attendance at screenings, with schools, state enterprises and government departments among the agencies forcing their students and employees to watch.

The obligatory viewings are the latest sign of how President Xi Jinping is ramping up propaganda as part of ideological campaigns such as the “China Dream”, which calls for restoring the country’s historical role as a global power.

it's not just like what capitalist states do. there's no reliable credit system of this scale being used on businesses that defraud people, credit ratings for banks notably are bought and sold for fees

Definitely Russia. It will implode much harder, because Putin orients everything around himself out of necessity, against rival oligarchs - and his death will lead to a desperate scramble for power. combined with the very far right politics he's cultivated, and things will get messy.

I don't think Xi has done that, and I definitely do see Xi Jinping being replaced by some closely associated with him.

Contemporary Russian politics seems more based corrupt, self-interested relationships, and putin only keeps everyone in line because he's the biggest dog with the biggest bark. The instant that disappears, everything falls apart, and every tears each other apart, like dogs.

Chinese politics just seems more based on bureaucratic advancement, and Xi's been able to grab his position because he's presided over such a growth in prosperity.
