Mamedyarov forces this quick draw with black. This means he's +2 for the first time through the RR, where he had more blacks than whites. He's in pretty good shape, I think. I really like the kind of chess he plays. It's the sort of fundamental chess that makes you believe you could be better yourself if you just believed in yourself a bit more.

e: Lev is playing like he's gone full tilt against Grischuk

Levon is trying to create something, and has given up two pawns. Here is hoping.

Agreed.

Also I took the time to look out, of curiosity at his results against Carlsen. In classical in the last 5 years or so he's like -5 and 2 =.

Which is interesting that they haven't played much classical chess. But the caveats are that that some of that period might have been that period when Carlsen was just loving crushing fools, and also that Shak has improved greatly (the narrative was after seconding Karjakin he turned a corner) in the last few years.

edit: Literally, them playing today would be two completely different players.

And it gave Caruana sole lead. If other players take desperate shots at him, I like his chances.

Kramnik is playing the strangest. I understand why he’s doing it; it’s just very weird to see him doing it.

We had not left it yet, but when I would wake in the night, I would lie, listening, homesick for it already.

The ending position for levon vs caruana is kinda funny, black king is completely surrounded aaaaand white resigns.

That's levon out of the tournament for sure. Completely choked especially with those two draws he should have put to bed. Sad as i've enjoyed watching his games the most as i've got into chess a bunch recently and thought he had the best chance to give magnus a run for his money.

Yeah I meant to post that.

In the Karjakin-So game I don't get why white gives up on his pawn with 23. Rd1? He could go Rc2. Stockfish suggests 23. ...Bg6 as the response and it doesn't seem so dangerous and also opens the possibility of 24. Rc6.

All I can figure is one of the following

a) He sees his pawn as a weakness and destined to fall regardless so doesn't fight for it.

b) he wanted simplification because either he thought he could draw/win the end game.

c) After Bg6 you have to move the rook again to avoid the discovered attack, so dare I say Karjakin sees that and probably then prunes it from his decision tree because it doesn't feel natural to move a piece twice when Bg6 is such an obvious move in response. You also lose the initiative after Rc2 Bg6 Rc6 Nxb2 I think because Black scoops up the pawn regardless and you've just shuffled your rook around.

No, the rook takes the e6 pawn and white keeps the advantage.

He's on there for for some of the tournaments, I think he really likes how they're reaching out to a younger audience and how they don't ever use engines. He's got a great voice and is brilliant at explaining stuff plus I love his stories. Dude just loves chess and it's pretty infectious, I'd really recommend his book 'winning chess tactics'

Kramnik not playing the longest game of the day for once. Only Caruana - Liren ongoing, Caruana has a small advantage but it looks like he's having trouble figuring out how to press it, Liren defending quite well. However it ends, Thursday's Shak - Fabi game is going to be really interesting for the standings. Same time, will have Grischuk - Karjakin, with both of them also playing very well lately and in shouting distance of the lead. Should be some really good stuff coming off the rest day tomorrow.

Crazy swingy endgame, shame Fabi didn't manage to win, he had a lot of chances late in the game, but it was a pretty intensely complicated position and he seemed to perpetually be playing in time trouble. Very stubborn defense by Ding in a very unpleasant position for quite a lot of moves. I hope he picks up a win in one of his next 5 games instead of Giri-ing.

It's really rough watching the FIDE stream, because it's basically Judit Polgar having to frequently pause in the middle of her analysis to explain why some other idea doesn't really work, and trying to be graceful and politic about it.

Yeah Shak is definitely going for something against Fabi, should be an excellent game, both players look like they're being pretty agressive.

That would explain why I was able to watch the first 15 minutes of their stream today, until I accidentally reloaded the page.

Now there is just a link to their payment demand.Which is a 404 page, of course.

Oh I do too, but the movelist on worldchess updates faster, so I've usually had that open in one tab and the chess24 youtube stream in another. But I have also very much enjoyed watching Judit Polgar do her best to tolerate that British dude. Not gonna pay 20 bucks for ~5 rounds of tournament coverage stream that I suspect will not actually work very well anyway.
