I take it you guys used ObjectScript rather than strict ansi m? Or were you passing around stringified functions and x-ing them without regard for type safety?

legacy code is ansi m with very little indirection but the occasional stringified and x-ed function stored in a configuration global.

new code is ObjectScript with very little indirection but the occasional stringified and x-ed function stored in a configuration global

working on updating my resume today. my career spans two jobs for a decade. should i list my pay rent jobs from before?

You can list company name, position and dates for non-technical positions, but you shouldn't give htem more than a line each

i don't mind not hearing a response from a company after tossing my resume into the void but it seems bad form to just ghost people after they've done a phone screen or something

Tbh I probably wouldn't bother, but that's me. I only want directly relevant information on my resume, not the times when I was slaving away for tips. That's one line I could be using to highlight a technical achievement.

its inexcusable to ghost people at any stage

it takes like 5 seconds to write an actual human being "hey thanks for your interest, but we've decided not to interview you [further]"

Before shortlisting it's acceptable, because realistically people don't have time to write out responses to every shitheel that sends in an application. I guess they could have an automated system, but I don't think you can expect that. Once contact is established though, I find it exceptionally unprofessional to leave someone in the dark after a rejection. It's literally two minutes to copy paste a generic rejection email and mass send it to all candidates on a secret cc.

I unironically like the automated systems telling me I was filtered out of the process. last monday I received an email 4 in the morning telling me that I was out, it was pretty sweet.

I don't like to spend hours on a coding test (which I thought I did alright-ish) and then get no responses from the company.

i got ghosted after 2 interviews and a code sample, after they explicitly told me they would email me either way within a few days after submitting the code sample

was a hosed-up way of getting a code sample tho. 30 minute time limit, had to be on a call for the duration, but with a recruiter on the other end who couldnt answer questions, not an engineer or anything

e: i was pretty sure i wasnt gonna take the job anyway tho, on the basis of "don't work anywhere programmers are considered a cost center instead of a profit generator"

Apple has ghosted me 3 times for different positions after I was multiple interviews deep for each one. After talking to other folks who haven’t made it through the Apple hiring process either, it seems like it’s pretty standard for them

is "partner engineer" a real engineering role or some bullshit newspeak way to disguise asking an engineer to do tech support?

I did a test and it was just 2 questions on hackerrank but they were so weirdly written and ambiguous that I spent most of the hour trying to decipher the instructions.

when I finally did it I couldn't finish them on time, it was too bad because the questions seemed pretty easy despite that.

depends what the company does, if their product gets resold then I can see that position being to go and sit with the reseller to get customisation work done, or deployments for their customers.

the pitch was basically "you help our customers do custom integrations with our api" and it sounded like 1/3rd api dev, 1/3rd sales engineer, 1/3rd troubleshooting for engineers wanting to use the api in their thing

i'm fine w/ the sales engineering part and that's even kind of what i'm looking for. but I had never heard of this role title before, so I'm not sure if it's really 3/3rds troubleshooting for engineers

unfortunately you can't tell at all from the title and maybe not even from questioning. your best indication might actually be the payscale

if it’s not a small company then I can’t see helping customers get the integration working with your api also being a position that lets you work on the product

One of my team members who is always pretty clear why he's going to be out (doctors, car, etc) had an "appointment today". I've been debating whether or not to straight up ask him, but it's probably better for his stress levels if he thinks I don't know. There's nothing I could do to retain him if I knew, given some circumstances in his situation.

I'm just calling in sick tomorrow so I can go to my interview. It's a senior position, and I probably could nail it if I hadn't been getting so rusty dev-wise, but we'll see how I do. It's a weird feeling not knowing if I'd want to do the job or not, but I have a friend at the company who thinks I'd be a good fit for the role.

HE'S WATCHING YOU
I wrote earlier about using JavaScript without typescript and how it was doable with some minor difficulties.

after spending the past week trying to understand a bad contractor's code I'm now convinced that doing a large scale JavaScript project without any typing is doable only if you're the only programmer and you are as strict as gently caress with your variables and properties. any sense of fun and creativity is lost as I'm just struggling to figure out what this guy was doing and it's made all the more difficult by the fact that I have no clue what's in any given variable without a debugger, and even that fails because sometimes one object can have two sets of properties depending on the application state. it's drained any desire I had to work with this codebase.

even worse my boss has said many times that he doesn't miss types and loves the new codebase.

time to start hunting in earnest I guess.
